Indisputable mood to bring in the New

1316

If you were lucky enough, like me, to enjoy a long Christmas holiday, I hope you had a good one.  I’m sure few of us are delighted to be back at it today but there’s an indisputable mood on the blog for bringing in the New.  A fresh start is needed and fortunately we’re at the start of the transfer window.

For Celtic most attention will be directed towards recruiting a striker who is capable of doing the business in the Champions League, not to overlook the important point of doing the business in Champions League qualifiers.  20-year-old Icelandic striker, Holmbert Fridjobsson, finally joins the club this month but although we’ll hopefully see plenty of the player this month he is surely considered ‘one for the future’.

One prolific striker does not solve all of Celtic’s issues, however.  The club remains acutely dependent on Kris Commons’ creativity (as well as goal scoring), which will become increasingly less-effective as opponents setup to inhibit him.  He needs a foil.

Since the annihilation in Barcelona Celtic have offered greater protection from midfield but with both full backs encouraged to overlap the midfield anchor role, previously occupied by Wanyama, becomes crucially important.  It also offers support to the strategy of allowing Commons a free role as an attacking midfielder.

Over the break, Archie MacPherson, Scotland’s greatest ever broadcaster, wrote an article for Celtic Quick News comparing two of Scotland’s greatest ever managers.  These debates are, of course, subjective, but the article provides a few objective points for consideration.  Archie has a totally unique range to deal with this question and is in no doubt as to who the master was.  Look out for the article next week, you’ll enjoy it – no guessing now.

  1. Good to see CQN back up today. Great second half performance yesterday. First half was decent enough, just a bit unlucky not to score with both Charlie and Kris hitting the woodwork. Thought Broonie had one of his better games and Adam is gaining fitness and starting to look the part again.

Extremely cold here in Minnesota. Been learning all about the Polar Vortex syndrome on CNN. Walking the pooch this morning, the air temperature was around -30c with wind chill making it feel like -45c. A real snot freezer. Kudos to all the Green Bay fans last night for braving the slightly milder temperatures over there. Playing in those temperatures really doesn’t bare thinking about.

Jeezo – I had to talk to my family for the past few days – that was veeeerrrrryy traumatic.

Great second half yesterday at Paisley. Me and Wee BGFC had a great time, picked up tickets outside the game – magic!

Thought we scored at a very important time – we had just started to get a bit flat and playing a wee bit side-to-side football when Adam went on another very positive run that committed defenders, and resulted in Charlie’s goal, and got us reinvigorated.

Wee Adam, Lizzie and KC were the most positive, and I also thought Stokes played some sublime passes in the second half.

Excellent 2nd half performance yesterday and notable that the breakthrough came when Adam Mathews took the responsibility of running at defenders and unsettling them to create the opportunity forCharlie

Was interested to listen to Gordon Strachan speak on Saturday opining that defences are so well organised and setup these days that it was essential for forward and midfield players tohave the courage to take on opponents to create gaps and therby opportunities.

Oh dear, SSN reporting that the flight to Turkey was cancelled today but nobody told Biton, Forrest and Lustig who all turned up at the airport.

Peter Lawwell probably mistakenly phoned Fern Briton, James McCarthy & Jon Obi Mikel to tell them the flight was cancelled.

  17. It’s important to remember with the ASA that this is one adjudication about one claim that they have made.

They can be investigated again for a similar claim, if approached from a different angle.

An ASA is decision is not a legal one, and doesn’t necessarily set a precedent that needs to be adhered to in future.

Thank you Paul and able helpers for bringing the blog back online. I must admit to withdrawal symptoms when the server offline message kept flashing up.

Why would anyone be surprised by Alex Thompson’s, or Angela Hegarty’s attention seeking drivel considering where they draw their wages? Just don’t give them the oxygen they crave. End of.

Looking forward to seeing our young Icelandic recruit in the Hoops. Interesting from Lenny that Tony Watt could be staying for the remainder of the season. Seems to me he needs an arm around his shoulder as much as a days training.

  23. Welcome back everybody I thought you were all over in Antalya:) great performance yesterday what a joy it is to see the team when it plays to it capabilities, pass marks for everyone, that was great entertainment best thing on TV all Christmas & New Year

Alec Thomson was a man I admired but no more, that blog he put out yesterday was scandalous & way OTT what is it with him Philmac & Angela Haggarty I know she was getting abuse which was rightly called out of order but to tarnish the reputation of Celtic the way Thomson did was inexplicable ,lazy journalism from a seasoned hack

One is an attention seeker that regularly needs to top-up their inflated ego.

One is full of their own self-importance/ abstract conclusions.

One is a nonentity desperate for recognition.

Don`t know if it is connected but in St Mungo`s School on Duke Street in 1961, there was a big kind of Memorial thing with Willie Maley`s name on it just lying at the back of the Art Room. Unfortunately, I didn`t take much notice of it .
