If you were lucky enough, like me, to enjoy a long Christmas holiday, I hope you had a good one. I’m sure few of us are delighted to be back at it today but there’s an indisputable mood on the blog for bringing in the New. A fresh start is needed and fortunately we’re at the start of the transfer window.
For Celtic most attention will be directed towards recruiting a striker who is capable of doing the business in the Champions League, not to overlook the important point of doing the business in Champions League qualifiers. 20-year-old Icelandic striker, Holmbert Fridjobsson, finally joins the club this month but although we’ll hopefully see plenty of the player this month he is surely considered ‘one for the future’.
One prolific striker does not solve all of Celtic’s issues, however. The club remains acutely dependent on Kris Commons’ creativity (as well as goal scoring), which will become increasingly less-effective as opponents setup to inhibit him. He needs a foil.
Since the annihilation in Barcelona Celtic have offered greater protection from midfield but with both full backs encouraged to overlap the midfield anchor role, previously occupied by Wanyama, becomes crucially important. It also offers support to the strategy of allowing Commons a free role as an attacking midfielder.

These debates are, of course, subjective, but the article provides a few objective points for consideration. That loan signing they got from Newcastle (Adam Campbell) will feed back how good big Virgil is. It was pure comedy watching him trying to hold back big Virgil by the jersey. The look on his face was a picture. And I don’t think he even got booked!

Nope, no booking, even though he clung on for about 25 yards. Then to add insult to injury was when Bronny got booked for a challenge on the edge of his own penalty box – even tho he genuinely went for the ball.

Doing some research today I came across reference to the Maley Memorial Trophy which seems to have been a football competition for (Catholic) secondary schools in the Glasgow/Lanarkshire area. For clarification (and before the usual suspects grab me by the cyberjugular) only Catholic schools were mentioned as being in the the latter stages of the 1960 competition. Maybe the non-denoms had been eliminated in the early rounds??

If you tolerate performances like this, your blind faith in Celtic will lead you to accept such mediocrity as an unbeaten league season to December, an improved defence, and a goal scored in every league game of 2013. I’m too rational to accept this lowering of standards.

Nearest I got was my nose pressed against the window pane but my friends used it and gave a Wow rating.
I passed it on the way to La Surena where you get an Oor Wullie style bucket of ice and 5 bottles of beer for 3 euros and a varied tapas/raciones selection and its BOGOF on Thursdays. More a woW than Wow but surroundings are brill.

The Maley Trophy.
I have a vague recollection of this competition from the 1960s. It was later extended to include Catholic schools from other parts of Scotland – I think.
I have a (very!) vague memory of my old school – St Michael’s Academy in Kilwinning – reaching the SF in about 1965/66(?) when the star of the team was a wee ghuy from Largs by the name of Liugi Macari.
I might be talking mince here ‘tho!
