Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

Look for the story they’re trying to distract you from !

How does that work with pre-contracts I wonder. He hasn’t officially signed with us even if he signs a pre-contract agreement in Jan, so I fail to see how Man City would be due any fee unless it’s a full transfer in Jan.

I doubt there will be too much difficulty in getting a ticket.

You could try speaking to any CSC ticket convenors you know, just to widen your chances.

Bugger wanted to get Brugge, for a great beer hunt in belgium, instead we get just about the hardest draw we could get,in a country with no great beer, and awful cuisine based on boiled flour ffs

  5. RT-That’s why we should have a points scheme for money spent on STs, kits etc.Would tie in with TBBs Membership Scheme proposal.I’m sure the website will be getting ready to punt the Half STs with priority for the Inter game.HH

  6. Its a good tie for us.

realistically we would be under-dogs versus any of the teams lining up in the knock-out stages. Better that we get a big name club like Inter.

The tie isn’t til late February, therefore will take care of itself when time comes.

My point of caution, is based on our last 2 games. There were periods against Zagreb where i thought they were going to score at will. Then on Sunday, a team as poor as StMirren, could feesibly of left Celtic Park with 3 or 4 goals.

Does Ronny need to appoint a defensive coach??

Could be our best signing of the transfer window.

  7. ” We need to try and win this competition for the prestige and the chance to qualify for the Champions League . It will be tricky match against Celtic ,but, either way , they were all difficult ties .We feel under pressure due to our league position because it is not what we expected. The Celtic tie has the feel of a Champions League tie ,due to the two sides history . There will be an incredible atmosphere but we are ready to face that.. Playing the second leg at home is a minor advantage “.

Auldheid and Jimmcci – thanks. As both are available for more or less the same price, is it not like buying an old B&W tv when an HD colour one is available? Can books on the Fire not be read in B&W like the Paperwhite? Last question, promise!

    ========================================

The Paperwhite has a screen that does not reflect glare. I have read books on both KD Fire and Paperwhite and the latter is best particularly in strong light.

Its as if the Paperwhite absorbs the light whilst the Kindle leaves it on the screen making it more of a mirror. See this for more.

    http://computer.howstuffworks.com/tablets/kindle-paperwhite2.htm

The Paperwhite is like a dedicated reader of books, the Fire is like a cheaper I Pad or any other Tablets that can do a range of things well but not as well as reading a book as the Paperwhite.

Put me down as a numpty then.

We were played off the park twice by Salzburg

IMO we were lucky to beat Zagreb in Glasgow and didn’t deserve much from the return

In considering the chances the so called Astra duds missed in Glasgow you could also argue we were lucky to beat them. We didn’t deserve more than 4 points from them.

We finished that group with 8 points.

I haven’t met any Celtic supporter who thinks that the 6 performances merited that return.

If I was a Dinamo Zagreb fan I would feel sore that they lost out to us.

I hang my hat on the hopes that

    1) we maintain the fragile progress made over recent months

    2) we come out the January window no weaker than we go into it and

    3) inter maintain their poor form and take us for granted

yip, no argument here. I expect the trigger is the TMS registration of the player, which occurs only after his current contract expires.

Perhaps Celtic are prepared to cover training compo to close the deal in January, rather than risk the player changing his mind despite a pre-con agreement, something Guidetti has been implicated in previously.

Funny thing about the mechanism of training compo is that it serves to disadvantage Celtic and other Scottish clubs at both ends.

Compo is considered to be the cost that the buying club would have spent had they developed the player themselves.

For Celtic that’s €60K per year trained, for Man City and other EPL sides it’s €90K.

When players move between jurisdictions in Europe, compo is set at the average rate between the clubs involved. So we get less from players moving to England than we would ordinarily, but need to pay more for players we bring in.

Rather than receive $90k per annum for players who join EPL teams, we get €75K, and similarly, rather than paying €60k for players we sign, we pay €75k.

Something ought to be done to address it. It impacts on other clubs considerably more than Celtic, both in terms of pure value, but also relative contribution.

Looking at the alternatives in the draw I’m happy with inter Milan … Might as well be the underdogs in every round now :)

Typically : I’m in India when we play the home game ….. And doubt I will see the match on TV as it kicks off at 1:30am their time .

All I can say is get inter em bhoys

  12. Wee trawl of Inter sites while waiting for Chi Kung class man to turn up. In true Sicilian style,he is late.Probably talking to his mother or his Granny on his cellulare..

General view is that they got an ok draw but in their current state they cant take anyone lightly .

They seem more excited with the rumor that James Milner will join Inter during ” the window “

14:14 on 15 December, 2014From the Guardian:“Celtic narrowly progressed from Group D despite finishing with a negative goal difference and face Italian giants Internazionale, who were unbeaten in their group and re-appointed Roberto Mancini as head coach in November.”Pretty harsh. I cannot see it as being a narrow qualification when you do it with a game to spare.

BBC Shortbread said pre DZ game, the ONLY reason we qualified was because Astra beat DZ……..

I’ve passed on your comments as I think they have relevance to changing the ways Celtic give supporters a choice in how they can best support Celtic according to the circumstances of each individual.

As to actually going to games, those who do enjoy that whole experience, so its what suits them. Others (gasp) don’t enjoy sitting in a stadium on a cold day or time spent travelling or they simply cannot attend physically and that suits them. No difference in the emotional support, its all down to a mix of personal choice/preference and circumstances.

It is quite possible to be a strong Celtic supporter without having to go to a game to prove it, but to have a team to watch play, regardless of how that is done requires financial support.

The trick is finding ways to accommodate all supporters who want to support in ways that suit them individually. The good news is that Celtic seem to have got this message but finding a formula that suits everyone is not going to be easy.

I’m thinking off the top of my head that with the ability to book your seat on an airplane online why not leave sections of the ground open for folk to do that BUT they pay up front by vouchers of different values at the start of the season. The voucher value reflects the priority given to the purchaser.

Throw in the ability to purchase merchandise using the same voucher and you have something that might go some way towards meeting your own circumstances and perhaps those of others outside easy travelling distance.

It’s not good, mate. Too few regulars, too many excuses.

Not a criticism,as I understand most of those reasons for not attending, but no matter what the club try,the attendances are poor.

Dodo = Jose Rodolfo Pires Ribeiro .

    .

    Brazilian -aged 22 .

On loan from Roma . Inter have first option on purchasing him -7 million plus euros.

Chi Kung man has arrived -only 35 minutes -not too bad by sicilian standards .

“We were played off the park twice by Salzburg”

Have to disagree. In the first game we played pretty well. They finshed the game stronger but they didn’t outplay us 90 minutes.

Second game they blew us away early on. We were stronger in the second half and missed some good chances. Close game overall.

“IMO we were lucky to beat Zagreb in Glasgow and didn’t deserve much from the return”

I don’t think Zagreb offered much in that game. The return was a lame duck where we left out some key players.

“In considering the chances the so called Astra duds missed in Glasgow you could also argue we were lucky to beat them. We didn’t deserve more than 4 points from them.”

We missed good chances in every game. Doesn’t mean we always deserved something. We were pretty unlucky to draw over there with the Griffiths goal ruled out.

“We finished that group with 8 points.”

It’s pretty common for teams to qualify with that

If I’m being honest, you seem to be taking a deliberately negative view of the group stage. Salzburg looked a good team and the other two were decent. We have no right to look upon teams from Romania, Croatia or Austria as beneath us.

We performed well enough to qualify early. Especially considering our best player wasn’t eligible thanks to the SFA taking too long with player registration (Jim Farry would be proud)
