Israeli recruiting anchor

965

Anchoring to a distant geographical base is not intuitively how you would expect a football club to recruit but Celtic are clearly working their contacts in Israel these days.  Beram Kayal has worked out well in the two and a half years since joining from Maccabi Haifa, as has Nigeria international, Efe Ambrose, who joined from Israeli club Ashdod in the summer.

Neil Lennon recently mentioned he needed cover for left back (despite right-footed Adam Matthews performing heroics there against Barcelona), so it is no surprise that Israel international Rami Gershon is in town today.  Gershon has played less than a dozen games for Standard Liege since leaving Israel three years ago, although he was a regular pick for loan club Kortrijk.  Should he sign he will be a low-risk addition to the squad but he has almost certainly received commendation from the same sources who recommended Kayal and Ambrose.

Best of luck to Rabiu Ibrahim, who left for Kilmarnock after promising much but delivering little as a prodigy at Sporting and PSV Eindhoven.  He was the low-risk addition of last January.  You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs……

I believe there is a bit of a myth about the Celtic support that does us no favours at all. There are supporters who behave decently – the majority- and some who do not.

At the Barcelona game in Barcelona I encountered both. A young guy in front had decided he was going to watch the game standing up. After a couple of minutes I asked him to sit down as I had no intention at my age and after that climb up the stairs of standing for 90 minutes. He just looked at me and kept standing. Fortuneately another lad of the same years heard me and swapped seats with the malcontent.

There was another guy in his mid forties in the same row having what I thought was either a booze attack or a heart attack. Luckily it was the former. I think he saw the last 10 minutes and as he did not affect my spectating I am not complaining, just wonder why he was there.

That is the reality and I think it is easier to recognise our imperfections in order to correct them than to try and maintain a myth that we are above reproach.

Recognising our human failings can be a consequence of them, but better I feel if lessons can be learned less painfully.

  7. Glasgow. Parkhead West & Barrowfield. A stone’s throw from the home of the mighty Glasgow Celtic FC. Consistently in the top 5 most deprived areas of the 6,500 areas of Scotland (according to the Scottish Parliament’s Index of Multiple Deprivation).

Glasgow Celtic FC consistently the most expensive match-day package in the SPL and more expensive than the Manchester City FC equivalent (according to BBC Price of Football Survey).

Hardly surprising then that many folks who would love to cheer on their local team are simply priced out of the market; ironic though, given that the original mission statement of Glasgow Celtic, set out by Brother Walfrid the Irish monk, was to provide food tables for the poor children and unemployed of the east end of Glasgow: typically Irish Roman Catholic immigrants who were discriminated against for jobs and benefits.

A season ticket for Parkhead does not make someone a “real” Celtic fan. Many of the “real” Celtic fans, those who Brother Walfrid sought to empower (deprived kids who live in the shadow of Parkhead), simply can’t afford the luxury of visiting “Paradise”, which is probably why the match-day atmosphere at Parkhead has come to resemble that of a FTSE 100 company board meeting most weekends. Many of those most privileged folks who CAN afford the luxury seem to have lost touch with the spirit of the deprived immigrant population the club was founded on. That’s a damn shame.

There was a big eye opener for me before the CL qualifiers this year when a bunch of miscreants only a couple of years younger than myself were well into their cups along london road when they began harassing a taxi full of away fans. When we confronted them about it they said they were winding us up, due to the scarf out the window being red white and blue.

Some people just dont get Celtic. I was shocked though.

But has to be said, in any bunch of roses there is bound to be a prick.

I agree! However I just posted this on Philmacs site in reply to his article.

    ————

While I agree with one or two points of your article, namely that supporters are 100% responsible for their own behaviour, the state they turn up to football stadia in and how their behaviour reflects on our club I am disappointed by the general tone of your article and the language you have chosen to use alluding to a particular group of Celtic supporters you appear to have an issue with.

Before I go into what comes across strongly in your article as an apparent dislike of the Green Brigade there are a couple of points I would like to take issue with within your article first. Not being at Dens myself, I asked a close friend his opinion of what went on at Dens Park. From his position he was not aware of any fighting or behaviour that was out with the norm for an away game except that a few more than usual supporters were a little more intoxicated than was usual, but not in the extreme. He stated that there were bangers going off and that was about the only thing he would take issue with. My friend is an Assistant Head teacher at a Glasgow Catholic School. 4 arrests pretty much supports his view. That said I don’t believe I would write an article based on my friends experience of the game and hearsay. Pretty much every article I have read from within the Celtic family has been based on hearsay of others. On another point I find it disturbing that Dundee Officials and Senior Police Officers decided to assist supporters in breaking the laws of the land by publically stating that they took the decision to allow drunken supporters to enter a football ground. That decision alone was criminal, stupid and could have resulted in a far worse outcome than that evidenced by your friends. With regards the use of bangers/smoke bombs by Celtic supporters I am 100% against their use and believe the position of the DCSA is of paramount importance.

Back to the gist of your article and what appears to to me to be an article attacking the Green Brigade I feel you have taken up a worrying position with regards this group. From your article it is obvious that you have the ear of someone within the walls of Celtic Park, how high up only you will know, but the language used such as “summoned” and the extremely crass statement about your friend paying for The Barcelona display demonstrates the position you have taken with The GB. Over this last few months there has been a campaign to divide and conquer the hearts and minds of the Celtic support against The Green Brigade. Whether this has been orchastrated by public bodies/officials or from within our club I will reserve judgement for now. Over this last few years you have built a well deserve reputation amongst the Celtic family with your stance and fine work on the Sevco situation. If as it seems you do have the ear of officials within Celtic Park would it not be better to use this to the advantage of The Celtic family to heal the wounds that are getting wider by the day rather than inflict another. I’m sure with your contacts you could arrange a a discreet meeting out of the public/media eye between Neil Lennon and Green Brigade members that both parties I am sure want and would be grateful for. If it turns out that divide and conquer of our hearts and minds is being orchestrated from within our club I feel you will need to be very careful with your articles and the language you incorporate in them, not to become that which you loath most. By that I mean a Celtic version of Scotland’s main stream media! I would hate to see you ruin your reputation with sections of our family by being viewed as a puppet for our club and the first member of the Laptop Brigade! :-)

About a year ago, I was at a party in a friend’s house and in walks a ghuy I hadn’t seen for years…..a great ghuy, and Celtic mad ……. Without thinking, I spontaneously greeted him with a rendition of “Henrik Larsson, Henrik Larsson, Henrick Larsson is the King Of Kings” …. That was as far as I got, since this big eejit strides over laughing like a donkey (looking like one too)………said to him “well, there are 2 options here….you either know feck all about football, or you’re a feckin hun…..whit’s it to be?” …… He, of course, went quiet, and walked away ….my old friend and I were then able to continue our ‘private’ conversation without any interruption FROM ANYONE at the party…..wife was raging at me……LOL

I have never made excuses for that element of OUR support. There were 5 arrests … 4 for singing. And that tells you nothing ?

There was open racial abuse. Although this is an offence. Obviously not as severe an offence as singing Irish ballads … And why is that ? And why does the clubs custodians except this behaviour towards our FAMILY. Due to their cooperation with the authorities and Paul Mc Bride in bringing about this recommendation.

If the game had been at Celtic Park they would have been filmed by the polis almost individually. Yet at Dens fans stripped searched got a few bangers in ? Again somebody not doing their job.

The club along with the authorities had no problems whatsoever in scheduling this game. Entirely due to Celtic fans who subscribe to pay TV being unable to see Celtic over a two month period.

Even though this is historically a well known phenomenom. Bank holiday football in Scotland. It is nothing new. Check out the legislation legal and SFA recommendations.

The head of Dundee security admitted freely that drunk customers were admitted into the ground. I suspect with full police authorisation. I.e they were breaking the law.

Now you may call this whataboutery and that your last post was not an ode to utopian living BUT I DON’T Stockholm syndrome again.

Have you ever been thrown out of Celtic park by Celtic stewards along with the racists that you confronted ? So it goes two ways. Doesn’t it

What you describe happened to you can happen at the cinema, a bus stop, a rock concert etc.

But why is it always the innocent Celtic fans that suffer ?

No the authorities including Celtic screwed up but are looking to wash their hands of it.

Our custodians say nothing due to their political desire to remove an element of the support from the club.

Supporters like me who ask and demand more about the lack of fairness and justice from our own custodians against our own family are designated troublenakers. They are been given the clear message they are unwanted and that it is only them to blame and the clubs custodians are perfect.

I do not see them anymore as part of our family. What was it John Reid said about those days are gone.

Still waiting but not much longer I feel.

WWF days are already here and the utopian navel gazers are selfishly throwing the last vestiges of it away by having the wooł so easily pulled over their eyes.
