It takes more than just ability to be a Celtic player

294

Erik Sviatchenko made an instant impact on Celtic’s defensive performances when he arrived in January 2016, six months after the departure of Virgil van Dijk and Jason Denayer.  He was our top central defender for the remainder of Ronny Deila’s tenure and for the first six months of Brendan Rodgers’ time.

Then came a game at Ibrox on Hogmanay 2016.  Celtic were rattled for much of the opening period and Erik looked most out of sorts.  His assured touch was replaced by a need to get rid of the ball early.  Fortunately things turned out well that day but I wondered if the manager’s faith in the defender was shaken.  Some of us doubted his temperament.

The season just ended started badly for Erik as he picked up an injury early in the Champions League qualification rounds.  A loan for former club, Midtjylland, confirmed where he was in Brendan’s plans.

Midtjylland returned most of the money we paid for him and the player is in an environment, and at a level, which suits him.  It takes a lot to be a Celtic player, more than just ability or experience elsewhere.

  1. Anyone on CQN who can explain to me a bit about the guy who runs the johnjamessite.com ? Seems to say a lot of the same stuff as Phil Mac although writes in a more enjoyable style and claims his sources / scoops are better. I have been reading a few of his blogs in recent weeks and enjoyed them though no idea of how accurate/truthful his stuff his. He certainly writes with a sense of authority. Today he has a password protected article that claims to provide the inside track on Murray and the BoS. Anyone read it?

    Thanks for any responses.

  2. Starry,

All you need to know about Joe Allen is his 15 million price tag. With wages to match.

John Mc Gunn.Again,Gunn.Mental tablet. If he was a direct replacement for Armstrong,if he was going,OK.Like some others,I can’t see who he would presently replace.

Listening to many, the talk is,oh,Armstrong and Biton can go.Really? Two exceptionally gifted players who bring a lot to the team in different ways.A fully fit Armstrong is one of our belts players, and Biton,is the best passer of a ball at the club.Keeps possession brilliantly.BR trusts him.

I like Mc Gunn.Aberdeen,Monkeys,Hubs,Motherwell, away, alongside BROONY,would seem a good fit for me.Where does that leave Eboue?,who the majority on here, including myself, seem to rate.

    It’s a funny old game.

And this is a funny old Tablet.

Aye the speculation is always a hoot, I’ll drive him to the airport myself:))

I said that about Eboue before if McGinn comes in he must be going.

Always looked a player and I know Celtic’s midfield is tough to break into, be interesting to see where he is after the summer. i wonder what Brendan has in mind for Young Jules Christ

  6. I always liked Erik. Sorry he’s gone.

I have always liked Armstrong. I hope he stays.

I have never been too impressed by McGinn. So, I don’t hope he comes. (But I thought the same about our captain, when he played for Hibs.)

Whatever I think, it’s what our manager decides that is all important.

  7. i'vehadtochangemyname on

Eric gone? if he is , a big thanks to him from me. He was stable when we needed him – during ronny’s time (not a slight on RD) and at a time when it wasn’t obvious that the board’s strategy (keep your head down and get on with it) would reap benefits.

CELTIC Football Club plan to meet with Glasgow City Council in relation to the issue of car parking around Celtic Park on matchdays.

Recent Council proposals, if approved, would prohibit parking potentially within a mile of the stadium on match days. Celtic once again plan to make the Council aware of our serious concerns in relation to these proposed changes.

The Club has been inundated with inquiries from our supporters in relation to these proposals and we can assure our fans that we will be doing all we can to ensure the Club’s voice is heard.

We believe this new range of parking restrictions would seriously disadvantage our supporters and we do not regard these proposals as appropriate or workable in the context of delivering major events at Celtic Park.

As one of Europe’s major sporting institutions, which provides a huge economic benefit to the local economy of Glasgow and the East End of the City, we consider it essential that our supporters’ concerns are addressed.

Celtic Park is one of Europe’s largest football stadia and plays host to major events, attended by huge numbers of people and profiling the city worldwide – it is essential too, therefore, that the needs of our supporters, the people who participate in creating these events, are also considered.

This issue also brings the inadequacy of local public transport links sharply into focus. For some time, Celtic Football Club has campaigned for adequate, integrated, public transport links to Celtic Park on match days and this is also a matter which requires attention.

Celtic will be delighted to work with Glasgow City Council on these matters and will always aim to ensure that positive solutions can be reached.

The formal consultation period has now been launched and through this process, the Club and our supporters have the opportunity to contribute.

If you wish to object to these proposals you must submit your views to: saferparking-celticpark@glasgow.gov.uk

Or you can do so by writing to A Waddell, Head of Land and Environmental Services, Exchange House, 231 George Street, Glasgow, G1 1RX

Objections must be received by Friday 1 June 2018. This is something we would encourage our supporters to do.

We await feedback from the City Council and will inform our supporters of any news on this issue as soon as possible.

Full details of the proposals are available at http://www.glasgow.gov.uk

  9. John McGinn has undoubtedly shown himself to be a very good player in our league. He does though , compared to our players , look like he lacks a bit of fitness. This is easily rectified, however for me he looks like he lacks a bit of class and I’m not sure whether even Brendan could sort that.

If he does sign I hope he proves me wrong and I will happily admit it.

  10. alrighty there Celts, enjoying our ‘summer’

Good luck to big Erik and his lovely good lady :-)

    i would take Mc Ginn.

  11. Like most Scandinavian players, Erik got Celtic & worked hard to connect with the fans.

He helped shore up our defence post Virgil & Jason.

He & his wife Anne worked on other initiatives such as Foundation programmes at CP.

In many respects he was a model pro, and never ever featured in negative headlines.

Sorry to see him go for all of the above reasons.

Seems to me that BR wants his CBs to be comfortable taking the ball out of defence, as part of his strategy of creating space for our midfield & forwards when opposition teams neutralize other options. Not sure that this played to Erik’s strengths.

He gave his all at Celtic & I suspect he will not be a stranger to our green field.

    Good Luck Erik & Anne.

  12. re JMcG , apart from a bit of dig what else would he bring to improve our first team, IMO his tackles are reckless and rash , when he runs with the ball he always looks like his head is down and he is ready to fall over and usually does oblivious to what is going on around him, poor fitness ,wrong build for the modern game , so whats to like?

Nice idea in principle. However I think Hawthorne et al will be all over this. Safety, security conscious, risk averse Celtic won’t take the tickets imo.

  14. John McGinn for the spl, all day long, I have my doubts he could make the step up to europe, it’s all about opinions tho, europe is where players need to perform so when we sell them we get top £, as ever Brendan will decide, thankfully.

  15. It’s statement o’clock again:

THE Club notes with concern the latest disclosure through the media regarding a business relationship which the Chairman of the SPFL has with leading shareholders of a fellow SPFL club.

This has given rise to allegations of non-disclosure and it is now imperative that we discover exactly the nature of the information supplied to the SPFL regarding this relationship.

It is equally important that any conflicts of interest, or even the perception of such, whereby positions within the Scottish football authorities could be undermined, or abused, must be aggressively rooted out of our game.

The SPFL, therefore, must immediately suspend its Chairman pending an independent investigation by a senior QC into the allegations and into the extent that other parties within the SPFL may have cooperated in this alleged non-disclosure. There is a clear prima facie case for this investigation.

Unfortunately for Scottish football, this incident immediately follows a similar call by myself for an independent non-executive director of the SFA to be suspended under similar circumstances. The credibility of Scottish Football in the minds of supporters and sponsors is at stake and urgent action is required. Transparency will be key to recovering the confidence of key stakeholders in Scottish football and this cannot be achieved if the SFA and/or the SPFL conduct internal investigations.

The SPFL and SFA must now appoint independent investigators. Scottish football is an important national asset and must have levels of probity and governance that are beyond reproach and that are transparently so.

It may well be correct, but how many pish poor performances have we seen from our players?

I thought Erik performed well while he was with us. And I recall one ‘eejit’ who cost us on his debut.

Disapointed,PAUL. We have had many worse players.

ffs – parking – how many years has parkhead / celtic park been in operation and now parking is a problem – you can almost hear it being discussed in the same masonic conversation – ‘right, it looks like we are fugged, can we get them on anything – oi levein you have a go at broonie and we’ll get someone to piff off their disabled punters’.

    RE: Hun statement

This is what happens when you are beholden to a rabid fans’ group. It’s a fenian witchhunt now, from removing 7200 celtic fans from Mordor, pursuing guys for banter from 12 years ago, to this latest cracker. I’m sure they’d prefer no Fenians involved in Scottish football full stop.

Fortunately society has moved on. DK is increasingly behaving like a mad dog.

  20. Saw Eric coming on as a sub at Hampden (debut?) and my first thought was – he looks small. Nice lhad though – I wish him all the best.

  21. Time for Celtic to go for the Carotid Artery and and demand action on decades of cheating. Demand a judicial review and insist on stripping of ‘honours’ that were acquired by cheating.

Also demand that the SFA investigate the suitability of having Glibby at the helm of any Club – though I’m quite happy the lying tosser is at sevco.

If we sign McGinn , another leftie in our squad which is no bad thing.

Over the past 6 years we have had more lefties in our squad than I can remember us having before . In my view left footers can bring more balance to our team.
