It’s not a gimmie

113

If your think this is a gimmie, think again.  This is a cup. You and I have seen Morton (bottom of the championship at the time), Partick, Falkirk, the Highlanders and more come to our Holy Ground and win.

We’ll need our game face on, or ‘the best gram for gram’ manager in the league will have his greatest result. And I’m not mocking, David Martindale is not a man I’d second guess (mocking a bit).

Big Adam as a totem should do it.

  1. Quiet on here tonight, so I’ll put my tupence worth in. Not been on for a while, but lurking daily, nay hourly. Tend to go in to my carapace when results don’t go our way but the Dundee job raised spirits only for the blatant cheating at swinecastle meaning a return to the darker side.

At these times I tend to get out the axe and chop sticks to make lots and lots of kindling for the coal fires and the Dowling stove – we live in the 1950s down here and I’m sorry I missed the fossil fuel debate the other week. Apart from that, hardly had a minute to myself…….

Anyhoo, very excited to receive tickets for tomorrow’s game for self, grandson and son in law. Think all players – and management- must be bursting a gut to put last week’s travesty behind them. Full throttle right from the start, please. No messin. Just dae it, Celtic- copyright Big Jimmy – and then dae it some more.

  2. On first watching Brendan’s press briefing yesterday it seemed altogether fine – no real issues it appeared – the timbre of his voice was warm and welcoming and there was little or, no change in its pitch, intensity, and loudness – robot-like in fact. The questions and answers seemed to melt together and be disposed of serenely. There was no contention, no areas of discomfort – all in all it came across as a cosy interview with a supremely confident manager who hadn’t a care in the world.

That bothered me a bit after the furore of the Hearts game and knowing where we are in the season, with the possibility that we could quite conceivably end up with nothing – so I watched the piece again much more closely. There were six topics discussed

    • Upcoming cup-tie against Livingstone

Very measured assessment expressing hope that we would get to Hampden again and mentioning the merits of Davis Martindale’s management – expecting a “difficult game”

    • Tynecastle

Re-iterating his opinion of the red car incident whilst emphasizing the team’s commitment to good form, carrying on from the results at Motherwell and against Dundee – seemed to be satisfied overall with performance at Tynecastle.

    • SFA Procedures

Will “take things as they come and will sit down with the club and lawyers to plan the strategy in good time.”

    • Liel Abada

Quite a long affectionate depiction of Liel’s time and impact at Celtic – sorry he has now gone and wishes him the best. Brendan had him at his house the night before he left.

    • Alexandro Bernabei

Basically saying “he was a good professional” who didn’t fit in – wishes him the best – not bothered that he was our only back-up left-back – happy that Scales, or, others could fill-in.

    • Callum McGregor’s injury.

“Not a new situation as he has had it before around this time of the season on a number of occasions” – if so why, when things are on a knife-edge this season is it different and he needs time out?

It seemed on second watching that it may not have been confidence that the manager was displaying, but resignation. Is he resigned to the fact that with the resources we have, we will not finish the season as he would like and with so many negative factors occurring throughout the season our ‘goose is cooked’…..so why get too upset about it? Is he, as Chris Sutton asserted in December, “just going through the motions”? Has he now made the decision to walk away in June after what he has recognized (as early as December) as a mistake to come back?

The effect of the Liel Abada situation on the morale of the dressing room must also be considered – BR and coaching staff are integral members of that dressing room. How close was Liel to all the other players? How have they dealt with his situation? Surely some will be thinking, ‘there but for fortune go I’ – some may be demoralized. Up till that day 7 October we had lost two points in the league, since then we have dropped seventeen points and lost the initiative in the title race.

Whatever you may think, have a watch – I saw a lack of urgency and edge almost to extent of complacency –

    but not complacency…resignation!

  3. It is strange that we are going for a title, we are struggling with injuries and the club let so many players that could (could) make a difference.

However, the passing of WHITEDOGHUNCH and EUROCHAMPS67 is a wee reminder that we are all human.

God bless their family’s and friends at this tough time.

    Thoughtful post Darwin ….

But I disagree with your interpretation.

Looks to me like Brendan has decided our best chance of success is with a smaller core …. and getting players who will contribute not much out of the line of sight of that core will help that core’s group focus and, frankly, his focus as a guy preparing the squad to win games.

Kwon, Tillo, Mikey, David T, Liel and Bernabei.

    Might succeed. Might not.

Aye mate….the Horse called ” BAD” ran very poorly yesterday….thats Racing for you I suppose ?

    LOL.

For a few months now, Nicky Hendersons Horses have ben running very poorly also, as many have been ” Pulled Up”/Falling….or finishing near last ?

I have several ANTEP[OST Bets on Cheltenham for a wee while, including some of Hendersons Horses. I am NOT too confident that he will have a good Cheltenham , but I will probably back his Horses….Just in Case ?

    LOL.

I had a very good day at the Racing yesterday, with a FORECAST coming up ( BEN CURTIS and KIERAN) finishing 1st and 2nd in the Sandown Race at odds of…11/2 and 10/1. The Forecast paid just over £55.00…so I was happy with that return.

However, I was VERY SHOCKED with the ” QUADPOT” at AYR Racing. I managed to be successful with that Bet, but I expected it to pay out around £12/£15 for a Pound Stake ?

To my deep surprise it Paid out…£90.80 for a £1 stake….I STILL cant believe it !

    NOT to Shabby !

    ……………..

Ive enjoyed several successful Betting days at Cheltenham, however one of my BEST ever Bets was at The AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL Meeting in 2008 ( I think ?)

It was the day BEFORE the Grand National, and all of Bets were beaten for that day…Until the last Race that Friday afternoon.

It was a ” 2 Mile FLAT” Race, designed to give potential future Jumpers a run out.

Nicky Hendersons Horse WON the Race at the odds of 25/1….which I had….However I ALSO backed the FORECAST in the Race with the 2nd Horse ( Trainer Alan King ) finishing 2nd at 40/1.

The FORECAST Paid £801.00 for a £1 stake.

My mates in the Pub couldnt believe it when I showed them the Winning Slip.

    MAGIC.

They had a fair idea that I had probably backed the Winner at 25/1….as they KNEW that I followed Nicky Hendersons Horses for years….but they were astounded that I had ALSO backed the 40/1 shot to finish 2nd for the Forecast.

I was also a wee bit astounded that day, but the Horse that I picked to finish 2nd was Trained by Alan King….a very TOP Trainer just like Henderson. That is ” WHY” I picked it.

    Magic.

    HH Mate.

  18. CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL starting on Tuesday.

FOUR Days of drama….and hopefully EVERY Horse comes back safe and sound.

Horses are the most beautiful animals and I love them.

However, I have often wondered… WHO was the FIRST NUTTER who decided to put Horse SHOES on a Horse, and use NAILS ?

HE/SHE must have been been very BRAVE or CRUEL and a NUTTER ?

What made them even THINK that a Horse would accept someone driving NAILS into the Hooves ?

    LOL

    HH.
