Two players arrived during this transfer window: Rami Gershon and Tom Rogic, with no first team players leaving the club. I don’t know what Neil has planned for Rami but his loan deal and stats at Standard Liege suggests he is here as cover. I expect to see as much of him as we saw of Pawel Brozek last season.
20-year-old Tom Rogic is different. He joins the club on the same runway as Victor Wanyama, Beram Kayal, Adam Matthews, Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre. I’ve refused to watch his YouTube clips but there is every reason to hope he will be as successful a recruit as our other recent acquisitions of a similar profile.
I’ve been banging on about Asset Management for years. The mantra being – they all have their price and if any club fails to grasp this reality they will underachieve. Against this backdrop, Gary Hooper will either sign a new contract in the coming weeks or there is a good chance he will leave for nothing when his contract expires in June 2014.
A fundamental problem prevented a deal being done for Gary last month. His value to Celtic, not necessarily in this season’s Champions League, but in the same tournament’s qualifiers in July and August, is far greater than his value to any suitor. In other words, his value as an asset is not measured by transfer fee alone. This squad should have enough to reach the Champions League group stages next season, worth the best part of £20m to Celtic. Any deals have to be measured against this target.
The kind of transfer decision Celtic made yesterday, a profitable club holding onto a player and at the risk of losing him leaving for free, is so much healthier than the scenario we previously faced, in an arms race with a rival who was prepared to spend money they could not afford in order to beat us. What a mistake that whole ‘Old Firm’ thing was. Glad to see the back of it.
The ‘big clubs’ in England didn’t come looking for Gary. Instead, a well-run club made several attempts to acquire a good player on a price appropriate for their income. No harm in that, you have to give Norwich the respect any yokel deserves trying to hook up with a beauty queen (nothing implied about people from Norwich, or Gary as a queen!).
There is no guarantee the same club will be playing top-flight football when he becomes available, or that a club with a greater income, or with a more flamboyant approach to spending, will move for him, so there is every chance that Gary and his new agent will figure out that an extra year on his Celtic contract for a hefty wage rise is a decent option.
There is an interesting side plot to the Hooper non-transfer. Victor Wanyama is sitting on an offer of a substantial wage increase to extend his contract from 2015 to 2016. Unless someone comes in with an offer greater than his value to Celtic in Champions League campaigns he’ll be here until 2015.
Chances of both players signing new contracts in the coming months has to be a wee bit higher today. All those meaningless scripts about Celtic being a selling club floating around various places will have to be shelved for another time. We are a selling club, but only at the right price and the right time, just as it should be.

When teams from the North of Italy play in Napoli or Sicily they are welcomed with chants of ——-
” Germans / Germans -welcome to Italy ”
When Sicilian teams play in Rome or up north they are welcomed with chants of —
” Africans / Africans -welcome to Italy “.
Remember being at a Catania / Palermo game which featured Catania fans treating the Palermo support to this ——–
” Your mother is an Arab , your father a Jew ,
Your brother is a junkie , your sister is a whore ”
To which the Palermo support replied —
” You are Greek illegitimates “

You might find some enciuragement in the Govt Select Commitee telling the FA to get its house in order or face legislation and this article on how it might be done.

Surely what we have always wanted is balanced journalism?
If something comes up that brings balance, even if it does not suit our position, we would not want it ignored?
Thomson was quite scathing of Rangers in his blogs this week, went much further than I would have expected and perhaps this is the balancing act, perhaps it is just highlighting the paranoia he well knows exists.
He has tried to raise awareness in England of the impact of Rangers behaviour on the public purse in terms of tax avoidance and misuse of insolvency laws.
I think he deserves a bit of slack and if what is right does emerge from the Rangers saga AT can claim to have played his part.
Off topic, and I’m no apologizing. This is dreadful.

Speaking to a Genoa fan earlier in the week and was complementing them on the point last weekend….especially with Juve claiming for an injury time penalty. He said it’s the only one they have not had in a hundred years….usual paranoia from a CFO of a 2bn€ company !
However he tells me Celtic have a chance which we know. He thinks Pirlo will be back and they will not risk Dogbas inexperience in Glasgow.
It’s important have our full squad fit ASAP and win all the games prior with a clean sheet.
Cant make the game myself…..which has been a lucky omen. Worried if we go all the way to wembley….will need to miss the game.
What a sight for sore eyes…

Rangers will not make a return to the top level that they have enjoyed under SDM’s period of financial doping.
Even with doping they did not dominate when Celtic matched it.
If they keep to the promises they made to shareholders re wage ratio to income, unless Celtic do something incredibly stupid The Rangers will never qualify for CL money.
They will have the second largest player wage bill in Scotland and so will be able to cement the 2nd best slot by attracting young Scots that Celtic decide not to sign.
They do not have the scouting or development infrasructure to match Celtic and they have promised that shareholders will get a return.
Celtic are now on a stand alone basis and by the time The Rangers reach the SPL as is in 2015 at earliest and that is by no means certain the UK football landscape will not be what it is now.
“61. The certainty that the loan would be renewed and never be required to be repaid
was expressed by various witnesses as follows:
(a) Mr Black: ‘When my first loan is up in mid-2011, I will decide either
to pay back the loan or re-negotiate. Whatever I feel is appropriate at that
moment.’ (Day 5/141.16)
(b) Mr Grey: ‘I could not conceive of any situation where the loans would
require to be repaid.’ (Day 5/107.18)
(c) Mr Violet: ‘I expected that the trustees would renew the loan with the
result that the loan would carry on until I died, which would produce an
inheritance tax benefit. Therefore, while I knew these were loans, I never
thought I would pay anything back during my lifetime.’ (Day 5/27)”

I agree with you. I think there is a good possibility of the former Rangers FC being stripped of 5 titles but I think that there is zero possibility of them being reallocated to us. Lance Armstrong’s 7 Tour de France have not been reallocated as far as I know and Ithink such examples will be used to ensure that they do not go to us.
Stripped of titles or not. They are still a Third Division Club.

In cycling i think the dilema for the governing body is that they aren’t convinced that the runners up were clean during that time – doping was rife

Thanks for the info.
We are hoping to get tickets for the Celtic part of the stadium but as we are applying as a large group I’m fairly sure that all the names on tickets wont match up with Passports. Do you know if this is rigorously checked or if its fairly relaxed?

TT/Ernie Lynch/TheOriginalSadie’s Bhoy,
Have to admit, I couldn’t really care less whether we receive any stripped titles or not (albeit they are our due).
If and i stress IF, they actually are stripped of any titles, that will do for me!

Caught your response yesterday and was unaware (or more likely forgot)of the clause in the LNS terms of reference to dig a bit deeper.
I’m glad it is there because the intent behind not registering the full details of what a player would get in his pocket is important in terms of the “punishment”.
I’m a bit surprised it found its way into the remit and I would not be surprised if LNS said they could not determine intent although the FTT material makes it pretty clear.
If the 3 wise men can come up with a construct that justifies a not guilty verdict that does not require me to believe Donald Duck is actually real I’ll be interested to hear it, but that did not stop the FTT fellas coming out with a similar justification.
Paul67,
A very good article and let’s hope to hear even better news in the coming weeks about contract extensions, just before the first leg of the Barca game would be very timely.

You have every right to say what you want to say, I disagree with most of it obviously but you keep posting m8ty.
You always talk about Celtic to get the blog talking about Celtic, in that respect you are an unsung hero. ;)

SoT,
when you say that the Torino Police and local authority have classed the Juve/Celtic game as high security, will that mean a blanket ban on sale of alcohol in Torino on the day of the game?
I know that was the case previously.

Would the stripping of five titles take it below that fifty titles five stars nonsense
Oops, Juve or is that a sign? ;))

Unless the FF article was meant as a wind-up, it only serves to present the Sevconian in an awfully bad and embarrassing light. I’ve used the words arrogant, deluded, dumb and supremacist to describe them of late, and the more erudite on this site will provide a better one word description, but words are failing me now as they continue to stoop to new lows.
…..’as a support we get angry but we rarely carry that anger through in the sort of mad campaigns to ruin people’s lives other supports have as their stock in trade’…
In my lifetime of watching Scottish football (since 63), I reckon I could research enough data to write a book about their misdemeanors alone, seriously.
Barcelona 72..Newcastle 69..Wolverhampton 64, Villa Park 76, Manchester 74 and 08, Chesterfield 80, Tranmere 97, Tel Aviv 07, Bucharest 08, Pamplona and Villareal 06….and so on.
Maybe this is the year zero right enough, and they’ve wiped the slate clean.

Brilliant, as usual…. (also…..”Donald Duck” …..LOL…!!)
PF Ayr
It would indeed and that will strike them where it really hurts. Their supremacy complex.
Think about the logic – if any ineligible player was played then the result is changed to a 3 – 0 defeat. That means recalculating league tables from past years. And you can only then strip titles if you find that another club would then have had more points. So how can you possibly do anything other than declare that club the winners?
Mind you, what do you do if you find that a club would have finished the season on 0 points and been relegated?
Auldheid
The text in question is actually cut from LNS’s reason for deciosn from September, and is an instruction to the SPL to serve an outline argument in thise terms.
The fact that the Commission did not take evidence from those in charge makes it unlikely imo that he will do much more than raise questions on the topic.
In terms of his decision, while the FTT provides much in the way of information on how the scheme worked, the questions being asked of LNS are entirely different from the FTT, and while he could come to a similar conclusion, my view is that the ‘tax point’ is irrelevant to the transaction for LNS’s purposes.
He has to frame the transactions within the football rule books, not Tax Law. He may come up with a similar view, and doubtless there will be surprises in there, but no one disputes that the transactions occured, or that the players benefitted from them.

We won’t meet Barca again until the 26th May and that will be a one off.

We have forty three titles …if they award them to us …hhmmmm
Don’t think they will award us any titles ….I’m not that bothered as long they lose that which they gained through cheating
PFayr
They’ll have 49 titles then. They can’t wear 5 stars on their jersey but Charlie plans to replace them with 4 stars and an asterisk to represent the stripped titles.
Bom dia,
Be interesting to see if young Tam get’s a game tomorrow. Hope so (have a good feeling about this one).
Down here it was the first Fla v Vasco classico last night. Flamengo running out 4-2 winners (canny access Youtube from work, but look it up – some good goals scored).
Anyway, Missus skorrie had decreed last night was the night for family haircuts, so as the game was not on Cooncil TV I had to resort to trying to judge the score by the cheering coming from outside (the neighbours, bar doonstairs, etc) accompanied by snip, snip and general hairdressery chatter going on in the hoose.
I’d just come back into the sitting room (as I said, temporaily turned into a salon for the night) when another loud cheer erupted from outside. Mrs skorrie was preening herself in the mirror and said “What do you think”
Apparently Dunno, sounds like Vasco may have scored is not the right answer when a woman asks you about her new hair-doo!!
