Japan, Korea, the new commercial landscape

221

Last year it was the Ange Homecoming Tour to Sydney.  In the summer, we are off to Ange’s more recent home, Japan, as well as Korea.  Stuck in a small league with a TV deal that is predicated on the value of a handful of games, we need to look for new markets.

I know there has been some scepticism at the club that there will be sustainable commercial value in Japan.  As we know well, players can go as quick as they came, which makes it precarious to plan Asian tours on having a local interest to sell.  Still, we have a responsibility to try.

Kyogo, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata all featured in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  Yuki Kobayashi was on the bench and is set to play in our remaining six fixtures this season, including the Cup Final.  While Celtic still hold the registration of Yosuke Ideguchi, he is on loan in his homeland and is unlikely to return to Glasgow.  That’s five players from Japan with successful narratives about Celtic to Japanese consumers, players and agents.  Japan’s representation in next season’s Champions League will overwhelmingly come through Celtic.

Demographics are important.  There are 125m people in Japan, 23 times more than Scotland, and on average, they have far more disposable income.  Madrid, Munich and the EPL will always get most eyeballs there, but we are now in the conversation.  A great deal of work has also been put into the commercial side, before we even reached this stage.  We have travelled to Japan and business contacts have come to Celtic Park.

Penetration of the South Korea market is in gestation, by comparison.  Hyeongyu Oh is only just in the door and there are no hard suggestions we will sign more of his compatriots.  Still, it is another large (population 51m) and wealthy market.

The great migration of Scots to North America began to wind down 40 years ago, it is unlikely that market will contribute as much to the club going forward as it has since the onset of internet access and multi-channel TV.  If there is nothing to be achieved in foreign markets, fair enough, but as I said, we have to try.

Road to Seville

It’s just three days until the cyclists leave from Celtic Park bound for Seville.  Today we hear from Brian O’Shea, who started cycling just three years ago and now faces an unimaginable task – all to aid the work of the Celtic FC Foundation.  You can hear Brian’s story below, and just as importantly, you can support the work of the Foundation, your Foundation, here.

Many thanks for all the support towards the cyclists.  Keep in touch with their journey on Twitter: @Road2Seville23

The hun senior team could give a lesson to the youth team how to accept runners up medals and get out the park in 10 seconds

Probably no surprise the young hun that got sent off for 2 dives was the one with first team experience😂😂

Thomas Cowan – It’s a shame that one team has to lose and unfortunately that team was Rangers.

    Whit?

  6. Congratulations to my mate Scott who’s bhoy Magnus Mackenzie continues to improve in the Tierney role. Deserved win tonight!

  7. Prestonpans bhoys on

Yes I noticed that comment too, I’m assuming Cowan has something to do with the huns?

As a matter of interest has the huns beat us at any level bhoys or girls this season?

  8. Just need the women now to step up and make it a week of victories over the huns. Game on sky tomorrow evening.

  9. Well done young colts.

Celtic do well to look above and beyond Hadrian’s Wall to foment sporting and commercial links in far-off democracies. Especially in the light of the SFA condoning a change to the traditional 3 oclock kick off time for the Scottish Cup Final, kowtowing to the prophets of Anglicisation who refer to another match at the same time as being more important. It is a huge slight against Inverness Caley supporters. Leeches, straw men and ne’er do wells the lot of the SFA . And with all the teuchter commentators that there are on shortbread you would think that they would be getting concerned about the effect on the travelling support and opining as they love to fo But no, all hail to Hazel Irvine and Aunt Sally and they can get shafted. Miserable so and sos.

Was a Rangers player really sent off for simulation?

Dearie me – at that age they should be learning to play the game, not practising the dark arts.

Whoever is coaching them at Rangers should be having a good look at themselves.

  11. so there is a picture circulating , young Ange as a 5 year old arriving in Australia, off the boat from Greece, his family truly migrants, fleeing from a right wing military coup that took over Greece for several years.

In the phyche of the western states, I feel it is often down played, or at least seldom commented on that fascism in Spain, Portugal and Greece remained for sometime into our own life times. these places only opened up to real tourism in the late 70s.

His father losing his business, and if not refugees, they did had to leave the country’ .

young Ange has a cardboard sign – 24.

the look on the face, in my opinion, scared but resilient, cant help but position it against the picture of VITO ANDOLINI arriving in new york, number 7 (on a ship built in Port Glasgow).

Only Ange knows how he feels about all this, how much he remembers, well anyones guess. Aged 5 will he have any memory of greece or the boat journey or what happened once in Australia, were there relatives there in Melbourne, a Greek community for sure, but anyone the family know ?

I do know, I always had a good memory, but the older i get the sharper the details of my really young memories become, often in dreams, crisply focused of those early years, they flit in and out my head, I cant drive past anywhere nowadays without some sort of image coming to the fore.

I do know my daugher , neice, and the less than 40 year old s in the family find me incredibly boring with all this geneology and history shite, as does most people to be fair.

    But anyways.

Let this sink in for a moment,

Ange was born on the 27th August 1965. In the new philadelpia district of Athens. (Nea Filadelfeia) itself an area populated by Greek refugees fleeing the war of 1919-22 with Turkey.

Jocks Celtic had been together for a grand total of 19 competative matches. But had won the Scottish cup (and a forgotten Glasgow cup) already.

Celtic played Dundee United on the 28th in the league cup section , 7 players would be on the pitch in lisbon

    Teams

    Celtic

Fallon; Young, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill, Clark; Chalmers, Divers, McBride, Lennox, Hughes.

Scorers Young (pen 23), Chalmers (28), McBride (86)

    Dundee United

Mackay, Miller, Briggs, Munro, Smith, Neilson, Soutar, Gillespie, Rooney, Mitchell, Persson

    Scorers:

    Referee: D. Smail (Selkirk)

    Attendance: 36,000

a mere 21 months later, Ange was still in Greece, maybe his dad Jim got to watch the european cup game.

Why say all this, well Ange is around the same age as many of us. 58 in august coming, I watched him on sunday closely, i got a great view sitting high up behing the technical area. He was animated in a gestrues way, but not in an anxious way, but ……….. at the end, most emotional i have seen him, he didnt break down in tears, but he did embrace longer, grab everyone and congratuled all around, his wallk around the park, that fist pumping and signalling and grabbing the badge, that was no falsehoods, that was a person deeply deeply affected by being at celtic park.

For all the press comments, words, sniders, pundits, wishing him to begone, i see a man who has landed in his most treasured psotion, maybe the planets aligned in august 65.

    A bizarre piece of journalism.

Anyone involved in it consider the possibility he gets evaluated poorly because … er .. he is not very good?

    My friends in Celtic,

We must find more game time for Anthony Ralston and other home grown players

    The Champions league dictates that.

I believe that out of 25 players we must have 4 from our Academy and 4 from the Scottish league system..

Could that be one reason why Scott Bain is still our number 2 and James Forrest is still in the equation?

We cannot disregard this as CL money, exposure and profile is so critical to our model going forward.

    HH.to all.
