Jetsam, flotsam and aggregated insight

752

Great to see so many names from years ago back on the blog yesterday.  As well as the jetsam and flotsam of life at Celtic, there have been times when the blog has had real value to the few, and occasionally, to the many.  Once or twice, we’ve made a real difference to our club.

Our ability to add value correlates directly with the great contributions which appear here; sometimes when people offer remarkable insight, sometimes when many aggregate their thoughts to analyse an issue.

My guess is that there will be moments in the next decade when that insight and aggregation will be needed, so thanks to everyone who keeps the place sane through the flotsam days, before the biggies emerge.  Thanks also for yesterday’s enormous support.  The untold stories of acts of kindness and generosity from the community over the decade are so numerous they are no longer exceptional.  It’s a great place to be a part of.

There are changes ahead.  A new blog design is on the way and the Quick News section will retire this summer.  Canajunbhoy has exclusively posted the section in the wee small hours for the best part of the decade, so he more than deserves peace to hang up his keyboard.  My sincere thanks for all his help.

CQteN was an enormous success and built three school kitchens in Malawi for Mary’s Meals (photos from the last two are on the way).  It was also enormous fun.  We’re going to do it again, although I’m not sure yet if it has the legs to be an annual event/bi-annual or other.  Open to ideas.

Some rank rotten beers being mentioned on here – Skol, Norseman. How about Breaker – malt liquour? I can still visualise the can

Wiz Breaker not an off shot of Tennents Super lager?

    Bobby,

I think that’s being unfair to a bucket of horse p@sh!

  3. Roasting hot day in Edinburgh. Looking forward to tonight. I live in the South side of the city so considering the Caley Sample Room for a pre-mtach beer then 20 mins walk to Murrayfield via Russell Road.

For those travelling through from the West – remember to turn your watches back about 300 years as you approach Waverley…

I’m not sure but I remember drinking a can of it once, in my formative years, and it was so bad the memory has stuck with me.

  6. Early 90’s possibly……remember Elephant beer?

    …..a beer you’ll never forget.

    Small bottles, big after effects.

I think they gave it the name as the morning after it felt like you had an elephant sitting on your head.

    Re Celtic TV .

If you go onto Contact Us on http://www.celticfc.tv fill out the little form they usually phone and can sort out pretty quickly. I know as they helped me out this time 2 season ago and a good few times since.

Elephant beer brewed by Carlsberg, 7.2% alc. Didn’t take too many bottles to get you trunk.

  10. Remember there are some local bye-laws in Edinburgh speifically aimed at tourists – which by Council definitions is anyone who lives further away than Livingston

The main ones are that it is mandatory for said tourists to wear a camera round there neck and a bum bag

You are also not allowed to look in the same direction that you are walking and must take a photograph of some old house that sits on the top of a big hill

And the latest bye-law for non-Edinburghers, is that you must also take a photograph of a tram, while you are standing on the tram tracks as one is heading stright for you

But you can bevvy on the streets so it’s not all bad

It’s a nice pub – possible a little out of the way if you’re arriving by train but great selection of beer and wine. Suits me since it’s on my way to Murrayfield! Beautiful day here – getting a wrm feeling already! :-)

Our train gets in to Haymarket at 3.55pm, I think it would be better to meet up in the Tune,or Ruries, it’s actually the nearest Bar from the Station.

Bought my overseas last week just before the game, 2 very quick email replies, 1 phone call to my mobile in Oz, took my details/payment and sorted out the Celtic TV login. The whole process took about an hour and was probably the best service I’ve received in years. Best bit was hearing a Glaswegian accent again!

  14. SSN about to do a bit about Celtic Park hosting the Games and Celtic playing tonight at Murrayfield

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

Tennents Super is branded as Tennents Extra in Italy. It’s €2.21 per bottle, at the premium strength of 9.3%.

I know because I bought 4 recently, and promptly tanned a couple to cool off in the heat. Can’t remember what I did with the 2…

Is the game a near sell out tonight .As far as I can see on ticketmaster there are only a few seats available

    ——————————————————–

Majority of the tickets have been given to Season Ticket holders. The remainder were available for public sale. When I picked up mine yesterday there were only tickets left for 1 section of the ground. However, Scottish Rugby only had a small allocation for public sale. I wouldn;t expect the ground to be full but I imagine it will be well-attended. There was a queue for the remaining public sale tickets when I was in.

  17. have to say i would be surprised if we got over a 30,000 crowd tonight

i reckon a large number of the season ticket holders tickets that got sent to them will still be lying in their houses tomorrow morning

    hope im wrong though

Highest ever attendance for a football match in Edinburgh….

Highest single game attendance: 65,860 vs Hearts, 2 January 1950

I doubt we’ll beat that tonight.

But it would really sicken the natives if we did!

    TBB,

The first time I realised how popular it is in Italy was a few years ago when I was sitting outside a cafe/bar in a small town near Pisa and the owner pulled up in his estate car and proceeded to unload cases of Tennents and very little else. I thought to myself “they are trying to make me feel at home” ;-)

Good shout. There’s The Athletic Arms on the corner but for some reason I never go in there…

  24. in saying that with the schools being off i would expect a higher than average turnout of lazy teachers and greetin faced weans, if they can be bothered gettin out their beds

it will at least keep them off the street corners for 1 night, and their weans out of the pubs :-)

  25. On SSN, the Murrayfield £1m pitch looking great as the bhoys were training on it.

CM saying the surface and everything else is perfect, and Ronny saying they will attack and score goals. KC expected to be fit by the sounds of it. (£7.5 m bid for FF from Southampton being suggested – really!!)

Torn between visiting a few pubs I haven’t been in for a while for sherbet and CQNing, or staying fresh and alert to savour the moment tonight. Decisions, decisions ;-)
