Jetsam, flotsam and aggregated insight

752

Great to see so many names from years ago back on the blog yesterday.  As well as the jetsam and flotsam of life at Celtic, there have been times when the blog has had real value to the few, and occasionally, to the many.  Once or twice, we’ve made a real difference to our club.

Our ability to add value correlates directly with the great contributions which appear here; sometimes when people offer remarkable insight, sometimes when many aggregate their thoughts to analyse an issue.

My guess is that there will be moments in the next decade when that insight and aggregation will be needed, so thanks to everyone who keeps the place sane through the flotsam days, before the biggies emerge.  Thanks also for yesterday’s enormous support.  The untold stories of acts of kindness and generosity from the community over the decade are so numerous they are no longer exceptional.  It’s a great place to be a part of.

There are changes ahead.  A new blog design is on the way and the Quick News section will retire this summer.  Canajunbhoy has exclusively posted the section in the wee small hours for the best part of the decade, so he more than deserves peace to hang up his keyboard.  My sincere thanks for all his help.

CQteN was an enormous success and built three school kitchens in Malawi for Mary’s Meals (photos from the last two are on the way).  It was also enormous fun.  We’re going to do it again, although I’m not sure yet if it has the legs to be an annual event/bi-annual or other.  Open to ideas.

  2. Morning all.

Glorious weather on the auld South Ayrshire coast.

    Almost Mediterranean!

To all those going to the game: safe there and back, and enjoy. Embra pubs going to be busy.

Well, if you went to the canal at Harrison Park and started walking South you’d get there eventually – on the outskirts! I use the canal bike path for my daily commute.

    Morning All,

CQN obviously is in a position to issue a new publication — The Good Pub Guide!

I know quite a lot of the boozers in and around Haymarket having spent an ill spent youth in many of them for about 30 years……….. intermittently of course.

Ryries which is just to your right and on the corner as you come out of Haymarket has always been a good boozer though well frequented by Jambos.

The Haymarket Bar right in front of the station across the road is bigger. Again a big traditional pub with a lot of space inside.

The Caledonian Ale House ( left towards Murrayfield when you come out of the station ) is another good traditional pub.

Diane’s Pool Hall — further up past the Haymarket Bar on Morrison Street — not been in there in years — might be ok at tea time but I would avoid it as the evening goes on.

The Spider’s Web on Morrison Street — was a staple haunt of Rugby fans on match days years ago. Not been in for years but was always OK — but no more than OK.

Thomson’s Bar on Morrison Street is quite good.

The Mercat Bar — Williams Street I think is good.

The Metro on Haymarket Terrace ( Part of the Apex Hotel ) gets a shout.

Towards the stadium — The Roseburn Bar, The Murrayfield Hotel, The Hampton Hotel and the Murrayfield Bar are all good for a drink.

Don’t know where I am going yet as I will have three teenagers in tow.

    Barshaw Park??

Ha I must have walked past you then big guy — I spent years in that park at one time — mostly walking through it to get to Harvie’s Bar on Glasgow Road!!

Harvie’s bar, now that does bring back memories. I used to frequent it with my ex bro-in-law years ago when I visited my sister who still lives next to Barshaw Park.

  11. See now that Celtic Park has been transformed into a World Class venue for the opening ceremony tomorrow night, can they not create a safe standing area while they are at it?

I’m sure that all sorts of planning and regulations had to be drawn up and adhered to for it to be fit for purpose. So how much extra effort would it take to push it through since it has allegedly been discussed with the council since the last AGM.

C’mon Celtic, you know you want to!:-)

  18. Trains on an Edinburgh to Glasgow line have been cancelled after a body was found.

The Edinburgh to Glasgow Central line has been closed since 08:50, affecting hundreds of commuters travelling to West Lothian, Shotts and Carstairs.

The body was found on the line, west of Haymarket. The death is not thought to be suspicious.

Commuters can still travel on the Glasgow Queen Street line.

If you were planning to travel on Glasgow Central service, I might suggest you check beforehand.

  19. thomthethim .

I did, but it was around 5.00am this morning when I read it. It was nice to meet you but,as you said just a fleeting moment in time, can’t remember why I was in such a big hurry that day.

  20. Never failed to get excited going to the first Celtic game of the season.

Celtic, Celtic, that’s the team for me.

thomthethim – sorry my bhoy, no West Donegal CQN AGM attendance for me this summer, but possibly a visit in October. Watched Sunday’s Ulster Final and thought we looked very strong, albeit wasteful with scoring chances….here’s to Jimmy Winnin More Matches. (with Celtic as well)

Decent summary of the bars around Haymarket. In all honesty though I would venture a bit further east towards the city centre and get on the tram at the West End or on Princes street. The pubs around Haymarket will be very busy and by the tram reaches these areas they may already be full.

  25. The Tongan boxer Lomalito Maola (@lomalitomoala) is currently walking around Glasgow with the Hoops shirt on and looking for support from the Celtic family to get more followers on Twitter. He intends wearing the shirt at the opening ceremony so let’s sure he gets our support. Check him out.

    Oldtim,

It was getting close to match time and, as I said, you had come over frae the Soothside.

    tully57,

Not to worry. Your proxy vote will still count!

For all that Donegal were more or less in control, in the low scoring game, another Monaghan goal was always on the cards.

Young players look good and with the minors also winning, the future looks bright.

  27. Embramike

Great point about the stadium. This is a rugby ground and entry to the stadium is via a small amount of turnstiles at the east end of the ground in particular. Once you gain entry to the ground there is a sort of park area and burger vans and stuff and then you enter the ground itself. I expect huge delays at the turnstiles if arriving late. The tram stop is at this end of the ground too.
