Kieran, Jozo, daring to complain about the Government

425

I lost count the number of times I heard “Worst Dundee United team I’ve ever seen” on the way out of Celtic Park yesterday. They were guileless, unable to do any more than stand in Celtic’s way, and they didn’t even do that very effectively, as Leigh Griffiths demonstrated.  I hope Mixu gets a grip on things soon as I’ve seen a better United team than that relegated.

For Celtic it was an important win on the back of a week to forget. Martin O’Neill was fond of saying the most important thing after a defeat is to avoid another one, when confidence slips it can often do so for a while.

Kieran Tierney won the free kick which led to the second goal and the penalty for the third. His energy levels were high and he looked every inch a Celtic player. Ronny knows teenage talent needs to be developed at a comfortable pace but the stage is Kieran’s right now he might just make the position his own.

Delighted to see Jozo Simunovic after a long and, for some, worrying absence. This was a difficult game to judge central defenders, as Celtic did so little defending, but what was asked of him was carried out well. He also showed a decent change of pace and sent a rasping shot on target from 30 yards.

While last week will take a while to leave the system, the next five days are enormously important: Heats in the League Cup on Wednesday before Aberdeen on Saturday. We can speculate on what’s destroyed Aberdeen, but whatever it is, there will be clear decks for the visit to Glasgow on Saturday, but before then we have one of our biggest domestic challenges of the season at Tynecastle.  Need to get it right for both.

My first reaction when I saw the Green Brigade banner yesterday was they some poor sod was likely to get huckled for this entirely peaceful and appropriate protest against a ridiculous law and ever-conspiratorial government and police. Such is the nature of the Offensive Behaviour Act that you can’t really complain about the Scottish Government confident that you are free to do so.

The Scottish Government-Police Scotland pact is set in stone. No amount of ridicule from courts to stadiums seem to affect it.  I remain appalled and alarmed.

Brendan Sweeney, legend from Celts for Change and more recently Celtic Graves, is launching his book, Celtic: The Early Years, at the Jock Stein Lounge this Thursday, 29 October. I’ve had a preview, it’s an incredible work. If you’d like to attend the launch, to catch up with the author on some of the most incredible times in our club’s history, email him to book your seat, brendan67@ymail.com

    weeminger …

the problem is that there is likely going to be a fight between the US soccer federation and the MLS on one side, and the NASL on the other, with the latter making antitrust claims …. which are likely correct … and that sort of litigation is very expensive ….. and even if there could be an amalgamation (like when hockey’s NHL absorbed the rival WHA in the early 70’s), most of those new clubs failed in the short term ….. so, there are risks, whcih I am not sure Celtic could afford to sustain …

most of the guys who own large sports franchies in NA are worth a lot, and because of the closed system and salary caps in the major leagues here, most of those franchises are worth a lot more than Celtic ….. (the average NFL franchise value is 2 Billion!)

I agree it would be good if Celtic had a presence here, but to be frank, given the market in which it plays, and the risks, Celtic probably cant afford to buy into the NA game ….

    Ah, the innominate John James.

He appeared shortly after King & Co got the keys to the Big Hoose, and for a little while, seemed to have some germane information.

As time as passed, he has become decreasingly informed, increasingly inaccurate, and simply loud. He’s certainly not a business, legal or management professional, given the improper use of domain vocabulary, detail and concepts. Trying hard to be someone, but lacks the insight.

Haven’t heard him say a thing in months that was worth repeating, and his blog seems to be little more than a King bashing platform. Fair play to him if that’s his thing, but there’s little more there beyond a cymbal.

If I’d to hazard a guess, I’d say he was a shareholder who’s lost out lately backing the wrong horse.

Let me know if he’s got some news. Can do without wasting my time on yet another disguised nonentity doing little more than making lots of noise but with nothing to say. World’s full of ’em.

  4. A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly-behaved grandson.

He has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, biscuits, all sorts of things. The grandad is saying in a controlled voice: “Easy, William, we won’t be long . . . easy boy.”

Another outburst and she hears the grandad calmly say : “It’s okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there, boy.”

At the checkout the little horror is throwing items out of the trolley. Grandad says again in a controlled voice : “William, William, relax buddy, don’t get upset. We’ll be home in five minutes, stay cool William.”

Very impressed, she goes outside to where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says :

“It’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don’t know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandad.”

“Thanks,” says the grandpa. “But I am William. The little b@@@@@@’s name is Kevin.”

JJ, I thought that classic internet dichotomy might get your attention. Despite using a moniker, he is innominate insofar as his identity is withheld. He is anonymous, unnamed. A blowhard so sure of his opinions that he’s unprepared to put his name to them.

DBBIA – yip, good of the ole Beeb to get out of Pacific Quay and all the way up to EK. Spoke to Kenny Crawford on Saturday, and very pleased at the club getting some attention. The senior team is the visible aspect of what we’re doing, but the work below that, whether the 600 kids who play each week, or the work we do with ASN kids, is considerably more important.

How are you btw? Seems you changed mobile number coincident with changing location. Sent you a photie of your back garden (Tinto) from your front garden (Coulter Fell) a few months back by way of welcome. Crap photie mind you, but it’s the thought that counts, eh :¬)

  14. Mike in Toronto – but the TV and marketing money for NFL is astronomical plus the stadiums are selling out tens of thousands.

Nasl teams are lucky to get 10k gates at the moment. I couldn’t find TV figures but they’ll be relatively small just now.

A franchise would be tens of millions rather than hundreds. Not that we have that right now.

I’m also not wholly sure how Celtic would benefit from it.

Did anyone else receive a call from Lawrie Ross insurance today?

I received 2 calls advising me they received my number from Celtic and that should I take out a policy £10 would be donated to the foundation

  16. A great chance for John Beaton to make a name for himself on Wednesday night. No TV audience and only 1400 Celts will be there. A chance to emulate brothers McLean and Muir and join the treble stopping at any cost brigade.

weeminger …. I am told that NASL franchise fee is less than a million. However, in general, I agree with you.

It is an interesting idea …. but the only way we could afford it would be if it stayed quite small, so the benefit to us would be small ….. if the NASL league thing took off, we probably couldn’t afford to stay in it, as the costs would be prohibitive…

but, no harm in discussing the idea.

Knowing what we know about the way our club is run you would think that all Celtic supporters would support Ronny and what he is trying to do in the longer run. You would be wrong though.

The problem at Celtic is one of a perennially unsettled team, but also one which consistently shows great promise. Ronny is not the problem, though his tactics in away European games are, his problem is the same one Neil faced before him, a board which puts its’ own interests ahead of the supporters, the club management and the team. Occasionally we will have our best players at the club at the same time, and may well qualify for the CL, but more often than not we start the season unsettled and unprepared, with the results likely to reflect that. I’d like to think this team can progress again this season, with our support.

  21. Mike in Toronto – I wonder if it would be cheaper / better experience to run a US franchise as the 17-20 academy than doing it here.

As you say whatever the reasons there’s no harm in discussions.

  22. If we were to set up a franchise in North America, the Development Squad team could play THEIR home games there!

    Makes sense tae me!
