Kieran, Jozo, daring to complain about the Government

425

I lost count the number of times I heard “Worst Dundee United team I’ve ever seen” on the way out of Celtic Park yesterday. They were guileless, unable to do any more than stand in Celtic’s way, and they didn’t even do that very effectively, as Leigh Griffiths demonstrated.  I hope Mixu gets a grip on things soon as I’ve seen a better United team than that relegated.

For Celtic it was an important win on the back of a week to forget. Martin O’Neill was fond of saying the most important thing after a defeat is to avoid another one, when confidence slips it can often do so for a while.

Kieran Tierney won the free kick which led to the second goal and the penalty for the third. His energy levels were high and he looked every inch a Celtic player. Ronny knows teenage talent needs to be developed at a comfortable pace but the stage is Kieran’s right now he might just make the position his own.

Delighted to see Jozo Simunovic after a long and, for some, worrying absence. This was a difficult game to judge central defenders, as Celtic did so little defending, but what was asked of him was carried out well. He also showed a decent change of pace and sent a rasping shot on target from 30 yards.

While last week will take a while to leave the system, the next five days are enormously important: Heats in the League Cup on Wednesday before Aberdeen on Saturday. We can speculate on what’s destroyed Aberdeen, but whatever it is, there will be clear decks for the visit to Glasgow on Saturday, but before then we have one of our biggest domestic challenges of the season at Tynecastle.  Need to get it right for both.

My first reaction when I saw the Green Brigade banner yesterday was they some poor sod was likely to get huckled for this entirely peaceful and appropriate protest against a ridiculous law and ever-conspiratorial government and police. Such is the nature of the Offensive Behaviour Act that you can’t really complain about the Scottish Government confident that you are free to do so.

The Scottish Government-Police Scotland pact is set in stone. No amount of ridicule from courts to stadiums seem to affect it.  I remain appalled and alarmed.

Brendan Sweeney, legend from Celts for Change and more recently Celtic Graves, is launching his book, Celtic: The Early Years, at the Jock Stein Lounge this Thursday, 29 October. I’ve had a preview, it’s an incredible work. wdh … you are a wise man, indeed! (and not just because you are agreeing with me … :)

bang on … I also thought of Reiper when I watched him … Shame he wasn’t available much earlier this season, as I think things may have turned out quite differently had he and Boyata played together from the beginning. We saw last season how much this formation/team relied upon two decent footballing CB’s and what a difference they made to the team last season …. think Jozo and Boyata could do likewise this season …

    Otherwise, how you keeping?

With celtic and another few of the dispossessed, you’d have a bigger league than the SPFL. Whether they would be able to have promotion to MLS, the important thing, is debatable.

Fan-a-tic … only thing I would say is that the grassroots game in America is booming and improving …. there are 300 million people here, many of whom are kids who are learning the game …. in a few years, there will be a good pool of talent …. not a lot will think of the SPL at the first instance … but if Celtic has an NASL presence, perhaps we would scoop up a few talented youngsters ….

the thing is, a lot of the good young players here seem to go the college route … not sure how it will go in the future ….

wdh … glad to hear you are doing well. Was thinking of you recently …. now that summer is over, I was looking at another cooking class for the winter ….HH

My nephew got six months in the YO cos of the new act, he is a Falkirk fan, got arrested at a game in Hamilton for mooning at the Ham fans, got banned from games for a year I think, can’t recall, anyways, he paid no heed to his ban, got arrested at a Falkirk home game, six months in Polmont for his troubles.

He is more rabid now than ever, he was never a trouble maker, just a daft boy.

Timreaper … in Canada it has always been quite popular … as it was an immigrant game, and Canada was more open to immigrants …. in Canada it has easily surpassed hockey as the most played sport (hockey is so expensive) …. and the same thing is now happening in the US …. partly due to the immigration in the US … lots of latin and south americans have brought the game with them when the moved to the US …. and the Americans have decided to adopt the game … and once the americans decide they are going to do something, they spend what they need to to ensure that they win …. so lots of money, including at the us college level ….

Sorry for butting in on your conversation, but I think the NASL proposals are intriguing. Celtic already provide coaching and development for a number of local teams throughout the US. Celtic having a franchise in the NASL would provide a path for the more talented kids to develop their skills at a higher level.

Americans love their sport and, as Mike mentioned, soccer (football) is gradually gaining a foothold. I would expect being in the lower tier of US soccer would be just the start.

Living in the US, I have no more interest in the MLS than any other league but having a Celtic presence would certainly make me sit up and take notice. The obvious home for a Celtic would be in Boston, New York, Chicago or even a Canadian city like Toronto where there are large Irish and/or Scottish bases.

Dublinbhoy …. no apologies for ‘butting in’ required. it is a blog …so an invitation to jump in is implied, and , in fact, welcome.

You make a good point about the irish/scottish presence in these cities … but those are MLS markets, and as noted above, the franchise fee for any half way decent market is WAY above what Celtic would or could afford …. I haven’t looked a lot at the NASL locations available, but suspect they would not be prime … and there are a lot of unhealthy pro sports franchises in the US, which are in poor markets … the leagues/owners just want the franchise fee

  18. coolmore mafia on

Surely if there is promotion at stake Mike, even a £50 million would be worth it. We could raise that if it was leading to a huge marketplace.

  19. OBA. Celtic were culpable for this act as was the late Pau McBride. Paul McBride stood as a Conservative candidate, later he joined the SNP, I would not be surprised if a deal was cut; he was going to be Justice Minister in the SNP government. After the so called Shame Game, 8 booked Huns and 3 sent off Huns? Salmond took advantage, Peter Lawwell should have told him ‘Celtic players behaved with remarkable restraint last night, Celtic do not have a problem with sectarianism, Celtic believe the SNP are trying to make political capital out of an unruly football match. Celtic will not be attending any summit.’

  20. Mike in Toronto,

As Celtic are not looking to join the MLS at the moment the fact that these cities already have MLS teams should not matter much. When the the time came to moving up to the senior league level, as long as the money was there, I am sure the US football authorities would be amenable to either allowing a 2nd MLS team in a city or state or for the Celtic franchise to amalgamate with an existing MLS franchise…I kinda like the sound of The Celtic Revolution :)

I think the business opportunities, either through investment or sponsorship, could be significant for a US club like Celtic with their footballing and social ethos.

  21. Good Afternoon.

Have been shocked by how bad Utd have become. They look utterly clueless. But it was good to see a big Celtic win after last week’s European disaster.

Coolmore … I dont know for use, but I dont think teams get promoted from the NASL to MLS …. the promotion system isn’t used in any major NA sports leagues …. the junior leagues are for player development ….

besides, Celtic FC is only valued at around that sort of money …. think we would have to sell Celtic lock stock and barrel to raise that kind of money! We cant have a feeder club worth more than the parent!

    Misrepresentation

As is now becoming a common practice, I will highlight one of the more pertinent contributions that I have received since inception on 19 September. I currently have over 750 to choose from. I do not doubt that many of the 85,000 visitors to this site read the comments. With 300,000 hits in just over five weeks, this cannot be solely attributed to leading articles. The following comment, from a new contributor, deals with perception:

“The problem is, like any business which is struggling, is that the public face and public utterances will give no indication that anything is wrong. Many businesses pay on extended credit lines of 45 or 60 days so non payment until then won’t cause a creditor to issue winding up notices. Usually the first time anyone has any concrete proof that the business is about to fold is either the arrival of a bunch of administrators who promptly lock the doors or the non payment of wages or taxes. HMRC give you a bit of leeway, but not much. Hence in public, there’s nothing to see, exactly why the loss of the AIM listing played into DCKs hands. The non appearance of the accounts raises some red flags, but to most people that’s not an issue.

However, those of us who can add up and read accounts to see the details behind the guff from the chairman on the front page can clearly see RIFC / TRFC is in deep financial trouble. Most of the ST money gone, no more until May 2016, monthly outgoings exceeding income by a fair way, no loans from any source, no chance of a share issue (rights issue or otherwise), court cases to force payment of huge legal fees, most of the heritable assets already hocked to MA, no one of any intelligence with deep pockets trusting a word DCK says, but somehow the train keeps rolling.

The thinking people reckon it’s rolling off a cliff, but it’s fair to say the passengers can’t see out the front and only a few are sticking their heads out of the window to see, of which JJ is one.”

My head is out of the window and I can clearly see the fiscal cliff on the horizon.

King is good at lying and misrepresentation. He and his fellow white collar criminal ,Greg Morris, passed themselves off as accountants, and set about exploiting the nascent Johannesburg Stock Exchange to their advantage. If quarterly returns were not positive, they just made them up. King would buy shares held by asset managers so as to maintain the equity price, while siphoning off millions of shares that he sold to major banks, and others including an orphanage. These shares were soon worthless. King does not discriminate on the ‘mug punters’ that he rips off. If they have money, as is the case with the RST and RF, he will lie and cheat his way to procuring it. It’s what he does best.

The misrepresentation of information at King and Morris’ latest venture, Micromega Holdings Group, takes their mendacity to a new paradigm. If you were unfortunate enough to visit their website, you would be assailed by positive bullet points. There is even a live feed of JSE price movements to give the impression of corporate gravitas.

However the truth behind the smoke and mirrors is not difficult to find. The global credit crisis of 2008, and the rapid devaluation of the Rand, has had a detrimental effect on this business.

MICROMega comprises four divisions, namely Financial services, Support services, IT and Automotive. In the latter earnings were flat and profits were pared to the bone. Morris admitted that automotive is not a core competence and is trying to sell this division.

In IT, Cloudware is showing promise but making only a marginal contribution to the bottom line.

In Support Services,a real-time meter reading system, hosted on cellphone technology, is being used by 50 municipalities, but profits are minimal. Nosa Employment, which places safety managers, is washing its face.

Last but not least is Financial Services. MICROMega Securities, an inter-dealer broker in bonds, derivatives and the rand, is a throwback to the corporate larceny of old. No other reputable financial services company will do business with King and Morris, but there are plenty of disreputable companies on their books. I understand derivatives. I posit that neither King nor Morris have the first clue about them. They give the impression that they do.

King has adopted a similar approach to Rangers. We have had the myth of Real Rangers Men and The Generations Pitch. We are now on the cusp of Rangers First CIC. The latter has four divisions, just like Micromega.

The market in South Africa is monitoring every move made by King and Morris. They are pariahs with a track record of criminal activity.

However, at Rangers, 50,000 fans and a compliant media, have ignored all the evidence about King. There will be the usual shock and indignation when the wheels come off. But this time they cannot reach for the defence that they were not warned.

  24. I see the guy from UEFA ,who helped Big Billy during a CL Draw,Gianni Infantino ,is standing for FIFA President,he gets my vote.

  25. If we were going to trying and get a NASL franchise now might be a good time to try it. It seems that since there’s no promotion up to MLS from it, it’s trying to expand and set itself up as a rival. If it comes close I could see the two launching a mini league of the say to top 4 teams from each league with the winner being crowned US Champions.

That’s the kind of thing that would draw tv audiences I’d think.
