Kilmarnock 3-3 Celtic

1194

Celtic frittered away another two points at Kilmarnock this afternoon after a performance which ultimately showed depths of determination but was marked by shockingly bad organisation.

Kilmarnock’s opener in 25 minutes could not have been simpler.  An 80 yard high ball was collected on the edge of the Celtic penalty area by Heffernan, who turned and picked out the onrushing Dean Sheils, who was initially being marked by Beram Kayal but the Israeli failed to match Sheils run, allowing the Killie player time to pick his spot and score.

The home team were encouraged by the opening goal and continued to press forward.  Fraser Forster did well to turn over a blistering shot from Kelly which was destined for the top corner.  Kilmarnock’s pressure was rewarded on 40 minutes when Kayal and James Forrest stood off a ball conceding possession.  Sheils crossed for the offside Heffernan to score but the assistant referee didn’t flag so the goal stood.

Seconds before half time Charlie Mulgrew was short with a back pass and James Fowler chipped Forster to give Killie and three goal half time lead.

The first 28 minutes of the second half were miserable for Celtic as the team appeared resigned to a fate similar to the Celtic team which visited St Mirren Park in March 2010 but Anthony Stokes had other ideas.  Stokes missed what was surely the worst chance of his career early in the first half when the scores were still level, and saw a good penalty claim denied on 71 minutes, but instead of hiding he stepped forward.

James Forrest, who also stood up to be counted throughout, ran at the Killie midfield and was fouled 25 yards out.  Stokes struck the resultant free kick perfectly into the top left corner.

Two minutes later Stokes collected the ball from Ki 28 yards from goal in what seemed like a safe position but his swift turn and inch-perfect shot beat Jaakkola in the Kilmarnock goal.

Kilmarnock were now rattled and Celtic were level on 79 minutes.  Daniel Majstorovic got on the end of a long free kick at the back post and squared for Charlie Mulgrew who headed home.

Having scored three times within seven minutes and with over 10 minutes of the game remaining the Celtic support had reason to feel confident their team could collect all the points but it was Kilmarnock would should have tied up the win in the final minutes when Heffernan found himself unmarked inside the Celtic six yard box but headed over, however, the home team will be happy to have collected their first point in four games.

  1. I dont blame Lenny for saying it was the half time team talk that dunnit BUT I have my doubts. If he pumped the guys up so well how come they were nowhere for the first 25 minutes of the second half; I never recognised any tigers in those dire minutes.

Personaly I think it was Stokes who lifted the team with a but of guts and craft in those six minutes.

That team talk is not the reason and to be honest telling people they are an embarresment (which was true) is hardly inspirational words you’d pin on your wall.

As long as the ole blood spatter analyst is taking out the baddies, all is right with the world.

  3. The Pantaloon Duck on

DBBIA – judging by his performance as a defensive linebacker in episode 1, he would fit in well as part of the ole sieve.

  4. The Honest Mistake (Sickened) on

The blood splatter analysts is not consistent enough to play. He can B positive and B negative in the same game.

  5. Just sat and watched the game again, attempting to reflect on the performance in a objective manner…..

The only positive was the support, the coaching staff and players, especially Kayal and a few others should be thoroughly ashamed. We are rotten.

However, Neil will not resign and the board will do what they did with BTM, wait until the results are so bad that no one will be supporting Neil.

I can hardly think about thursday night, God help us.

However, however, no one has died, Celtic football club will continue, it’s just another league title, european campaign, there will be another one next year.

We never improved as a team in any department in the second half, at no time did we have a spell where we passed Killie off the pitch

Individuals got us back into the match by their ability

  7. Hi to one and all.

Not posted for a while due to starting a new job.

There’s something not right in paradise. You only have to look at Lenny to see that.

What I can’t understand is why insist on playing players who think they are bigger than the club?

Bench them now Lenny. I would rather go down fighting than watching these charlatans embarrass our club.

    Still backing Lenny 100%

Fortune and Murphy were dumplings at celtic but Bangura makes them look good.

This guy is a dud of Rafael proportions.

I’m a huge critic of Samaras but I’d start him over Bangura every day, warts and all. I’m actually glad Sammi was spared yesterday.

Bangura is much more than a bad haircut, and at the moment looks like a cross between Daryl Murphy and Marc Fortune.

  9. ghuys and ghirls , i m hearing too many people coming up with excuses regarding the reason why neil lennon is not getting results.

There are people blaming injuries, and whilst i have the utmost sympathy with the torture that neil and his family have had to live with , we cannot let this cloud the issues this club has.

For me, Neil lennon should be replaced now!

The team are not performing for him,and tactically they look a shambles.

although i hope this can be turned around , i cannot see neil having the ability to do it.

Mowbray’s Boro have started well and to be undefeated is to their credit but……..

they have played 6 home games drawing 5 and winning one. Not automatic promotion form and would certainly be unacceptable at Celtic park.

Although some people on here regard yesterdays 3-3 as a ‘result’ so may our standards are falling even faster than I thought.

    No budget. PL deciding signings.

Who the hell of any stature would take the job?

Matthews on the left was unorthodox but the least of our worries.

Cha at RB, an injured Hooper for 40 odd minutes, and Kayal’s childish strop. That’s before we mention Mulgrew’s howler for the third.

Did we get bangura for nothing then?Is james mc fadden playing for nothing?

That ridiculous Yellow affair does not strike fear into the opposing team, the Hoops have won the European cup, the Hoops strike fear into the opposition.

TBB- but the IRB have to be seen to back their referee, even though the decision spoiled a showpiece game.

I disagree. Celtic should make Rovers, Sporting and Yeovil defer to our status and make them wear their away kits if ever we visit their grounds!

Seriously though, I cannot see us ever being successful until we have a white away top, green trim and either black or emerald green shorts. simples.

Having spent on the likes of Bangura (not a NL signing by all accounts), do you think they are going to magic up a budget. No money will be borrowed so this year’s income is well gone. You can’t take back the Banguras of this world and ask for a refund. DD, PL don’t want a manager of stature e.g. MON as they want to control all aspects of the club. NL is just happy to have the job and despite not getting the signing targets he asks for he never complains. Do you honestly think they are going to shell out for a high profile manager and borrow to give him a budget? Once DD realised the EPL wasn’t going to happen he recouped outstanding debt and turned off the tap.

  18. can we give Lawwell credit for signing Izzaguire, Kayal, Ki, Ledley and until yesterday, Hooper. And can we thank him as a result of yesterdays performance for signing Stokesy?

If he’s taking the rap for Bangura and the others we aren’t too pleased with then he deserves praise for the ones that work. N’est pas?

Rumour has it he recommended Ortiz to Rangers as well.

  19. Beamishismypint on

    RobertTressell

According to Phil on yesterday’s beyond the waves you can give PL credit for most signiongs as NL hasn’t been given the players he requested. Whether the players turn out to be good or bad, a manager should not go to the gallows based on the performance of players he didn’t sign!

  20. So Lennon was unlucky with Mulgrews passback and the balls over the top catching our ballwatching and frequently out of position defenders cold.

He’s also been dreadfully unlucky with lopsided team selections and poorly implemented playing systems.

He’s also been dreadfully unlucky that the coaches of teams with a fraction of our budget and playing talent (StJohnstone,Killie, hearts)had not already been poached by top European clubs so he could have faced likeminded rookie coaches with the same tactical nous as himself.

Take off the blinkers and don’t let sentiment cloud our thinking.

    We need a coach.

  21. Good afternoon Bhoys.

In my opinion it wasn’t a team talk that turned things around yesterday, it was the reaction from Stokesy when he felt he didn’t get an obvious penalty.

Well done wee Forest, an excellent 2nd half performance.

  22. beamishmypint

the signings may not be neils(not convinced this is the case) but the team selection and formations are his.

they look a shambles and are not motivated by neil lennon. They are not playing for him

    That is obvious to me.

And by the way, did any one notice NL signalling “ONE MORE” to the team yesterday when we were 3-2 down .Is a draw acceptable now at kilmarnock?

    hail hail

  23. According to E-tims, Mr Lawwell is actually getting interest on the bonus he deferred.

I don’t think anyone will be stunned that his interests are being well looked after.

Don’t disagree that NL is struggling. However I dread to think who would be inflicted on us if he were to go.

  25. bournesouprecipe

A simplistic answer to your fullback complaint would be not to have attacking/attacking RB/RM or LB/LM (although, for what it’s worth, I see Matthews as quite decent defensively – when playing with James Forrest, he has recognised that his role is to put balls through and cover defensively, which is why they have an excellent record together).

    Matthews/Cha or Matthews/Forrest

    El Kaddouri/Ledley

    would work for me.

  26. BeamishIMP -call me ole fashioned but after the ‘Hang Neil Lennon’ game that was popular amongst the online horribles last year your post could have been phrased a bit better, without diluting your argument.

Semantics not my strong point on a Sunday morning. Simply feel sorry for Neil if he is to fail without having been allowed to bring in players of his choice. No more metaphors with a hangover.

i know, the attraction to the job is not what it used to be.Maybe now is the time to bring in an experienced assistant to work with neil?

but, i agree he is struggling badly
