KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

  1. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 9TH AUGUST 2019 4:45 PM

I think Hendry could be a player, think he is harshly judged by people looking for scapgoats.

    ___

    May be true.

I would still consider him deadwood because Neil Lennon seems to think of him that way. He has preferred Bitton.

I don’t have an issue with Ralston but once again the manager has preferred to play Ajer out of position and once again employ Bitton.

Hopefully working with Hendry, the bhoy had a few good games I thought, passing was decent.

  5. It is quite obvious the Neil Lennon is a world class manager. After all, he got the job at Cletic and we have an abundance of geniuses on here who are not in situ at Celtic Park.

Incidentally, if we were a Sevco Celtic and Sevco were the old Rangers with our recent ( 8years) record, I would be convinced they would slaughter `well tomorrow. Why, then, do I still worry that we might drop points?

Is it to do with insecurity born of the constant negativity levelled at our team over decades?

    Hot smoked…,

I’d think it has more to do with the conditioning and experience, that there is little expectation of a fair crack of the whip.

  8. Maybe. If they showed some ambition then Kt might have stayed.. …last year we ‘lost” making on day of ask match..killed atmosphere ..which affected team..a Good signing can lift. Team….ET..Judas before 89 cup final..

Ozil and Kolasinac left out of Arsenal squad, after another ‘security incident ‘?

  12. I don’t know if it’s the constant problems with the blog jumping about, the adverts or the constant moaning of the self entitled on here that is driving people away from this blog or a combination of all three. 8IAR and a Treble Treble is just not enough for some people. I suspect a quadruple Treble coupled with a CL Cup win wouldn’t suffice either.

  13. 67 European Cup Winners on

I rarely post on CQN – if I do it’s usually to have a go at Paul67 for having a go at BR

But I find myself in an anxious state of mind

The media messages including some on here have me concerned

So i rant on here, not for anybody to read it but to get it off my chest

I was (to a degree still am) critical of appointing NL but as he is here he gets my support

    I thought it lacked ambition

Then the selling of our favourite son for £25m set me back

PL does not fill me with confidence regarding the distribution of the said £25m

If I let it run, my head will take me to the Huns are on fire and we are in trouble

So I force myself to consider reality, facts the truth

    2 CL Qualifiers negotiated

A third CL Qualifier we are in a good place

First league game, 7 nil at home

As a club (or business) we are in such a strong financial position

The transfer window closing in England is in our favour

We have 3 weeks to go shopping – and we have a load of money

So what am I worried about why am I concerned

Well I just watched NLs press conference

And there it was, for 12 minutes (the You Tube version I saw) NL looked like, spoke like, he had just been hit with a big bus called reality

I do not know but I would guess

PL briefed him pre media duties and told him to tone down the “reinforcements are on the way” message

I thought NL looked a bit let down – we have seen that look recently BR had it

We are the richest club in Scotland by a country mile but we gamble with our dominant position

I appreciate what PL has done to get us into the financial position we are in

But I am nervous that PL thinks we have enough (based on the wage bill not the cash in the bank)

PL is not concerned – that is why, I am concerned

  14. GO TELL THE SPARTIM:

Your quote is accurate. Neal is telling us that “We need to move a few players on before we bring anyone in just yet.”

With a week to go before the CL playoff deadline, that basically kills any hope of getting anyone in prior to that. It also inexorably starts to jam us up against the September 2 deadline. With all that money in the bank, it is utterly baffling why we have to defer importing players to the last minute, and be dependent on other club’s timetables. If other teams leave it to the last minute to bid on players that Neal wishes to release, where does that leave us? And if we receive no bids? What then? As policy, it is senseless.

  15. 67 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS:

After reading your post, I went back and watched Neal’s presser. I think you are right. My heart sank, because he looked completely deflated. He was definitely in tamp down expectation mode. I now fear that lack of outgoings, then no time left in the window, will be used as excuses for lack of incomings to bolster the squad.

  16. Rock Tree Bhoy on

You have to wonder if we could have closed the deal with Motherwell / DT similar to the way Arsenal concluded the deal with KT, (obviously not money wise). Maybe we have learned something.

Anyway Arsenal are now my English Club, well whenever KT plays, we were so lucky to have him, let’s hope he goes down there and lights the place up, good luck to the bhoy, he was brilliant for us.

  17. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Skint sevco enquire about a player – well everyone knows their skint so no need to play hardball with them cause they haven’t got any money!

We enquire about a player – well everyone by now has heard about KT going to Arsenal so yeah we’ll have some of that,

Of course we are going to play down expectations, we have to negotiate well and this is part of the negotiations, any time we enquire about a player the selling club will think potential Lottery win.

  18. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Rock tree bhoy,

Get the player signed before the big money deal is finalized its no rocket salad

  19. Seems to me to many guys have been sucked into the hype across the road. See all those freebies they are signing, there is a good reason. We have and continue to spend money to get players in who have options, there is a reason they have options.

Yes, we have lost a lot of players but a wee over them does not suggest they offered much fir various reasons.

    Ddv offered nothing

Boyata spent half the season injuried and was often a bomb scare when pressed in games.

Benkovic spent most of his time injuried.

    Compper did less than nothing.

    Gamboa dont nothing.

    Toljan was very poor.

Lustig was well past his best a liability against pacey players.

Izzy offered nothing second time round.

    Allen offered nothing.

    Mulumbu did jack all.

    Weah offered a little.

Burke could run fast just needed to learn to play.

KT was injuried and well below his best all season.

People mat disagree, but thats how i seen it.

nfl did not say he needed to sell to buy, he said he wants to move a few players on so the squad is a decent size. We need a rightback, leftback, and a powerful forward/ targetman.

If hendry, miller, hayes, kouassi and/ or ralston can find new homes than thats a good thing because they dont offered much if anything.

  20. mullet and co 2 on

Honestly if this club don’t spend some of the money that is piling up in the bank they won’t get another penny from me.

  21. Go tell the Spartim on

It doesn’t matter how you dress it up, we need to move players out before getting new ones, so the ones we don’t want as they’re not good enough need to shift before we get the new ones, Ipso facto we are weaker.

Lenny knew the score before he got the job, we could develop the next Messi, sell him for £250m and the same ole routine would occur. We gamble on CL qualification each year, where were the signings in jan that’d prepare us for now, the fact that they get away with it is of great concern

  22. mullet and co 2 on

My estimated wage would be less than £50m a year. The future 19/20 will now be guaranteed to reach the £100m level. We are well within a wages to turnover ratio than us comfortable.

I get that we want Hendry and Sinclair off the wage bill but we are in danger of financial suicide by NOT taking some of our money in the bank and spending it on players that are better than the ones we have.

  23. fairhill bhoy on

Melbourne Mick-I can’t ever remember KT asking to be called a legend,so gees peace.

Could my team be better? Of course they could but being born in the 40’s and seeing my team through thick and thin I am very happy where we are today.

Money in the bank and 2 weeks to spend it. If we continue in Europe I may extend that heated driveway
