KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

All this talk of the club keeping tens of millions in the bank has me wondering how much of a hit they are worried about taking over compensation claims from victims of historical abuse by Torbett and others.

Claims of this type are not covered by insurance and it is likely that there were a very significant number of victims, many of whom will claim that their lives were to a significant extent ruined by what happened. Who knows what sort of quantum that might involve?

It is not a nice thing to contemplate but it does look as though the club is potentially facing mass litigation over what went on and the final bill in terms of damages and legal costs could be astronomical.

The right thing must be done no matter what.

  2. Luton airport flooded inside – absolute shambles! Immigration area badly affected so passengers being kept on planes leaving those (us) waiting to board standing about like spare tools at a wedding. 🤬🤬🤬

Even upstairs bars are flooded 😱

  3. Wouldn’t be too concerned with Lenny being downbeat on transfers, I imagine that is a negotiating strategy.

Not sure it will fool any selling Club but no harm trying. I think this time the Board have to step up to the plate & spend a bit of serious cash.

My count is that there are 26 outfield players on official squad, not counting the 2 Yanks & Benyu who are out on loan & not available.

Out of the 26, There are 8 with varying question marks over them , either we just haven’t seen enough of them to make a judgment or we have & we are not yet convinced, Hendry, Ralston,Miller.Luca,Kouassi,Arzani,Morgan &, Bayo.

So for me there are 18 outfield players that I would rely on and I’m including Boli & Hayes in that number.

That simply is not enough to see us through a tough Scottish Season, we need at least 5 in & need at least 3 of the doubtful 8 to come good,

  4. still peeved that we didn’t steal barker from them! a show of dominance and hurting them at the same time – are we getting complacent? Unless we sign Ryan Kent of course – that would show intent and would be a huge right up ye!

At t his stage, with current squads, rangers will win the title IMO – we need to sign first team picks (not squad players) to ensure we keep them at bay!

  5. Interested to hear Lennon’s comments re transfer activity. nothing’s happening until players leave.

I had a quick look at the figures and what this might mean.

Players out and previous manager would amount to £218k a week in savings with around £55k a week being added. That gives a saving of £163k a week. £8m in savings. £6m out in transfer fees (£6m still to pay). With Dembele and KT money dropping in and manager compensation amounting to around £20m in the bank with more to arrive I would expect similar results to be posted with all other revenue, expenses being like for like year on year.

This would leave Celtic with in excess of £50m in the bank. Qualification to CL adds £35m.

I think we should expect 2 new players to arrive in this window and announcements on the hotel and museum. Huge progress is possible if we qualify to CL this year, Why are we still gambling with this???

  6. CORKCELT:

Today Lenny retracted his “Looking for 5 recruits,” comment, and amended it to “2 or 3, after we move others on.” That probably means 2 in, but what happens if no one wants Kouassi, Hendry, Miller et al?

I happen to agree with your comment, but what we need is just not going to happen.

Agreed on the Danes last night. I thought they looked like a sub-par bottom six SPL team.

The mob across the city have played nobody yet, and struggled twice.

Gerrard won’t get near us this season, whether we bank the Tierney money or not.

what is your reasoning for this comment?

  8. BBC caption before the start of the Thistle v Dundee United game, referee, Willy Collum. Spelling mistake, obviously everyone knows it Dick.

Think Sevco will maybe do a bit better than last season but they are miles off us in every department. To say they will win the league based on a couple of matches is taking mineshafting to a whole new level, if you see what I mean….

  10. Not gambling for CL qualification ; Lawwell is planning for Europa and puppet Lennon will do what he is told. The parismony will put the league at risk.

I expect Lennon to be gone by Christmas as the team / squad is weaker then last season.

  11. sevco scored 4 goals against a danish side. away from home. in europe.

we scored 4 goals once away from home and we also 6 scored goals away from home once.

    in the scottish premier league!

i think things will be tight this season.

they are stumbling from financial crisis to financial crisis and we have tens of millions in the bank.

if this situation was reversed they would be burying us.

  12. Celtic are currently flirting with total disaster. If they mess up the 10 in a row – it will be unforgivable.

    one night …

they (we?) are apparently no longer called mineshafters… we are now bedwetters or pantywetters … please do keep up.

    :)

on that note, if we are updating nomenclature … (I feel like the OED)… what is the new term for the old happyclappers? … I have some thoughts, but probably not fair if I pick my own selection ….

Mike, I forgot, I was called a bedwetter a few times last season, should have remembered……

  16. Regarding KT, apparently he lived the dream and it was time to move on – really Kieran? You had 4 seasons in the sun and you had had enough. I remember as a child being devastated when Lou Macari left. I went into my bedroom and carefully removed his head (I didn’t want to ruin the Celtic jersey) from the pictures of Celtic that adorned my walls (all four walls and even the ceiling). Over the years there have been bitter losses especially C Nicholas, but what always bugged me was how Celtic fans treated King Kenny. I was at Big Jock’s testimonial and Kenny was booed non stop. Yet, Kenny stayed until he was 26 or 27 and earned the right to be called a Celtic great. I am sorry but KT will never be a Celtic great as far as I am concerned.

Threw the Res12 guys under the bus and then lied about it at the AGM

    =====

In the interests of accuracy and use of language.

    1. He acted in a disrespectful manner not just to the Res12 guys representing the small shareholders who signed up to Res 12 but to those signatories themselves by insisting all dealings should be with the SFA whose disciplinary process was rendered powerless under the 5 Way Agreement. If Celtic were unsighted on it then they were incompetent.

That number has increased as more folk understand what took place from 2011 to date.

A CEO who disrespects shareholders is on shaky ground and to continue to do so adds arrogance to the charge.

So less “throwing folk under a bus” more made a massive error of judgement.

I dont recall him lieing at the AGM, he was aware of Res12 presence in the hall and I think when he said we were happy he was genuinely shocked when put right. He wasnt best pleased on exit either.

I removed your other points just to focus on Res12 but in them might be the answer why Celtic have avoided dealing with the Res12 issue themselves.

What might come out from those under any investigation might not be contained to those being investigated. Something isn’t right.

  19. Auldheid,

Corporate P101 ; if there is nothing in it for you personally don’t get involved.

This has been the Lawwell mantra on Res12 since day 1.

Nothing personal just business — although you do need to play along and appear to be on board.

  23. Brown when asked, right after the game against Cluj, about the consequences of KT leaving said “we’ll all get better bonuses”.

Forest was then saying “I want to finish my career here” which means I want a pay rise.

I hope that the focus behind the scenes is on using the KT money to keep the current squad happy. A few of them will be wondering if they are worth a wee bit more in their pay packet!!

  25. If its not obvious to you that KTis a genuine fan and loves the club but just wants to achieve all he can in the game then you need a new perspective on life.

Its not Celtic’s fault we play in a ” crap” league.

But it’s maybe Celtic’s fault if we have overplayed KT or asked him to play through injury.

Anyway, a genuine question for you :-

How do we attract the quality players we all want to a ” crap” league.

    Cheers and HH.

Not sure that Celtic can be absolved of all responsibility for playing in a crap league …

when the zombies were liquidated, we had the chance to try to make some changes, which would have resulted in a fairer and, hence, better, league …

the problem, of course, was that, if the rules (bankruptcy and league) had been applied properly, the zombies would never have been competitive, and that would have been bad for (short-term) bottom-line …

but, every action has a consequence … as we are about to find out …

who wants to play in a crap league, and get no protection from the refs while you are doing so ….

eventually, there will be a price to pay for Celtic’s obsequiousness
