KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

Or just doesn`t fit with the agenda ?

” Shortly after 1700 hours local time, 300 troops from the 1st Battalion, Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire, occupied the centre of Londonderry, replacing the exhausted police officers who had been patrolling the cordons around the Bogside.

They have been on standby for the past couple of days.

The arrival of the British troops was greeted with cheering and singing from behind the barricades in the Roman Catholic area of Londonderry.

They were chanting: “We’ve won, we’ve won. We’ve brought down the government.”

Problem is – they do not give a damn. For instance, they do not care that Jimmy Aldaoud died starving on the streets of Iraq, a few weeks after having being deported from the US, the country he had lived in since being six weeks old. He was not a white man.

Anyone that protests they are Christian yet a Trump supporter is a liar.

    No.

  9. After a few days and when people look at facts we quite often get sensible but still different views.

All I would like as a starting point is for Celtic (usually PL) to not make statements that we are going to come out of transfer windows stronger or as mentioned above by Paul that if Celtic ‘..are serious about making progress’. We aren’t really. The evidence shows that we sell. Even the supporters of the ‘business model’ accept that. We have dominated our domestic game but we don’t improve on the field because we can’t. You can not sell one of your best players every summer and improve. The side now isn’t better than 2 seasons ago. Arguably it is weaker.

Money from transfers solidify the accounts but they don’t markedly improve the team. That would take £100m.

Fans over 35 are tortured by the history of our club. 15-18 seasons ago we had Henrik and the bhoys competing at the top level. Soon after we were getting to the last 16 but in the last decade (in the main) the financial gulf has stretched beyond comprehension. If i was 20-25 I cant really remember the 00’s as a fan so my reality is the last decade. Celtic are domestically dominant but a bit part in Europe. Being in the Champions league is ‘…like winning a trophy’. Aagh, no it isnt.

If we qualify for the C league PL, Lenny and the players will all get bonuses. They will feel they have achieved. The fans will have to shell out significant money to watch us probably struggle. The club think qualification is what matters. The fans always want more. I find it hard to watch our captain or Manager justify being humiliated in Paris or Barcelona because they are rich.

It boils down to our expectations not being possible to meet because of our environment. That makes us angry, fed up, dismayed at times.

I truly believe if our board planned better and acted modestly more pro actively there would be fewer arguments even though we probably wouldnt do much better but we would probably play better football.on occasion as the team would be better prepared.

They knew Boyata, benko and Lustig were going or at least ooc. They didnt sign a replacement for SA or a sensible one for MD.

Its things like that that frustrate. Signing players give fans hope.

Most people ‘get’ the business model and yes it has helped to deliver extraordinary domestic success but it also half emptied CP under RD.

A better balance is needed. I dont think yhe club has any ambitions other than continued success in Scotland but that is not a given just because we have more money or better players in certain positions.

Immigration officials, though, paint Aldaoud as a repeat criminal who violated court orders. ICE officials in Detroit, in a statement to The Post, say he had 20 criminal convictions between 1998-2017, including several violent charges, and that he cut off a GPS device he was supposed to wear while on release from immigration custody.

“(His) immigration case underwent an exhaustive judicial review before the courts affirmed he had no legal basis to remain in the U.S.,” ICE’s Detroit office said in a statement, adding that he was sent back to Iraq with a “full complement of medicine.”

Good analysis on Lawwell and ultimately how we will not take advantage of the cash pile and ensure TIAR.

Maybe dropped points at Fir Park might open the biscuit tin.

Is there any other club in the world with as much cash at the bank that we have?

Will any shareholder ask why we are amassing this amount and have no plans to spend it?

Years ago we heard on CQN that P67 pressed a book called moneyball into Peter Lawwells hands. Since then we have read the mantra ‘stick to the plan’ repeated at quarterly intervals.

That plan is was fine in the times when the maximum we could get for a player was £10m. Now we can get £25m for a left back. Who knows what a young central midfielder like Christie would amass in transfer fees should he score over 20 goals and become player of the year?

Our financial position is such that inflation on transfer fees has outstripped every other inflation level on every other income stream. It is a reality that 25% of our income could be banked on selling one or two players each year.

There is over £50m sitting in an account.

If you lifted that cash and put it on the ground In £10 notes you would cover the entire Glasgow area and have some change to spare that you could then go over to Edinburgh and do the same thing.

Is it financially prudent to amass this money? No- for a normal company of Celtics size, banking close to a minimum annual turnover would look like a company scared of its own shadow who can’t or won’t invest and will soon run out of luck. If you don’t have the people to run the business with vision on how to invest and return profits then there is no point in amassing cash. The turnover grows for a time but if you stick to the same plan you had on the lower turnover you will get caught by your competitors.

We absolutely must incrementally increase the quality of the squad. Look for gems outside of the UK and punt them to the crows down south prepared to waste millions of their money. We absolutely must invest in wages for better scouting and analysis to tap into better markets at earlier times. For another £2m we could have a world class team of scouts with outstanding analysis.

Arsenal (yes them) own their own analysis company. Ajax are actively scouting and signing players from South America. We have Peter Lawwell taking direction from his son and knowledge from his network as well as Lennons eye for a player and a temp Director of Football. It’s a system based on luck and being in the right place having the right conversation at the right time then any scientific method. Again we have enough money to buy a Caribbean island and yet we take this amateur approach. We could buy Aberdeen and Rangers and still have change to increase McGregors wages by £5k per week.

When will our luck run out.

I absolutely agree with selling players but do we have the resources to cope with negotiating player sales and player purchases?

How much time has been spent by the people charge with Ellington Tierney and how much time have they spent or been able to spend on buying players?

    Tangbhoy,

This club should be looking to get wages to a level that allows us to compete in the Champions League and amass enough coeff points to keep us in the league format each year.

If we can get turnover to £130m we can afford wages of almost £80m. Some people will laugh at that but it’s achievable.

All we need to do is ensure we beat clubs with half the money we have over 2 legs and 4 games. UEFA have made it hard but not too hard. The odds should be 75% in our favour but we are making it 50% with no plan.

We should have a folder of info on each club we could possibly meet by the time June comes. No surprises.

The goal should be 5 years of qualification for the Champions league groups in a row. £40m income plus a players or two sold at £20m, increasing £ on sponsorship and inflation on merchandise etc gets us to £130m turnover easy.

If Celtic are clever they could sell the scouting intellectual property they amass in chunks to other clubs.

Ah so thats alright then??????? WTF

  24. Celtic Social Media was always crazy but lately it’s gone bonkers altogether. I just dread to think what it would be like if we lost a game. I long for the days when Roy Croppie would post his pics and music and we could just relax and enjoy being Celtic fans in each others company.

Now there is a constant edge to almost every conversation, whether, Political, Social or Football related.

I know we can’t rest on past glories but we have just won the last 8 Championships, Trebles in the last 3 years,

In the third round of European Qualifiers with a very good chance of progressing and we have won our opening SPFL game 7 nil.

Do people here just get off on worrying & apprehension,

Anyhow big game today and am looking forward to it with relish, any kind of win will do me for this one.

Motherwell have been going OK and with us coming off a midweek European Game with 2nd leg coming up net Tuesday they will fancy their chances.

The line up will be interesting, Mikey & Elhamed are doubtful and for me Morgan didn’t do enough midweek to get a start. I expect Ralston & Sinclair to replace the afore mentioned.

Julien & Ajer to start & Boli to hold his place & have a storming game.

I have a feeling Edouard might be rested with The Griff leading the line. Shved for Forrest might be too many changes but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Main thing is football is our recreation, following Celtic is supposed to make us happy , so cheer up ghuys and if Roy Croppie is lurking you are badly needed, time to make a comeback.

I think they see him as one for the future, I don’t see him figuring this year, He picked up a knock playing for the Colts against Queens Park last Tuesday, and was substituted. He is only 18 yrs of age so plenty of time.
