Legal term of the day: uttering

751

Since Corinthians FC gave up the good fight football has largely been a brutish game.  Even those supporters, who are unable to raise a limb with anything approaching athletic guile, often talk a brutish game.  Now, in Scotland, the accountancy geeks are having their day.

The mere mention of the word ‘taxation’ has ears pricking up while the entire corporate accountancy system is now as much of the daily lexicon of football fans as the Laws of the Game.  I reckon the law geeks will have their day soon.

I’d never heard of the crime ‘uttering’ until yesterday, now it’s all I hear from my Edinburgh sources.  Uttering can broadly be defined as using a document you know to be forged.  Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with Our Hero, just an observation for you.

On other matters, still no word from the SFA on the scope of their investigation into Rangers, or the position of their president relating to this matter.  When respected mainstream journalists are making unchallenged assertions about improper registration of players, the SFA cannot choose to ignore these events.  We know they are aware of the allegations, we know the allegations relate to the period when the SFA president was involved with Rangers.  We just don’t know if the SFA are doing anything about them.  A statement confirming that no one is immune from investigation would be a start.

  3. Woah! Rangers owe £15m, not £9m!

Is this why all those players were given spanking new lucrative contracts? Gonna pay a lorra lorra tax on them, surely?

£75m sounding less ludicrous by the day.

  4. Those who jokingly subscribed to that Save Rangers thing must have known that the Media would use it in a positive way. That could very well encourage genuine commitment from Rangers fans who would otherwise not have subscribed.

Brown superb last night. Celtic superbly controlled last night. We looked like a decent European outfit and ball retention was top class. I also felt that the ” Scottish Football Needs Rangers ” brigade would have discovered that we go to our games because we love being a part of Celtic. Despising Rangers is just a natural revulsion towards their narrow principles.

Have heard the FF situation will be resolved shortly as he can be signed anytime as it was part of the loan deal.

Maybe the club are waiting on a really bad news day for the Shame before announcing his signing.

  9. Surely even Shortbread wouldn’t be brazen enough to go back and hire Smith for a third time? Especially when he walked out on them twice and is also pretty hopeless.

  19. Guys – saw this question asked the other day but cannot find if it was confirmed. Are the soggy buns, by virtue of the fact they owed a substantial sum to HMRC at 31st December with no agreed repayment plan, already scuppered for a licence for next season in European Competition?

  21. Big Swee walks on with Neil Lennon on

    Tee hee hee:

Rangers are unlikely to be out of administration in time to be eligible to play in European football next season, BBC Scotland understands.

The club need to lodge audited accounts and other financial statements by 31 March to compete.

But administrators appointed by the club hold out little hope its finances can be sorted out by that deadline.

It is also understood the club owes HMRC much more than chairman Craig Whyte has suggested.

European competitions have provided a vital income stream to Rangers in recent years in terms of prize money, TV money and gate money.

The club’s potential absence from the Champions League or Europa Cup next season would be extremely damaging as it looks to emerge from administration.

Rangers went into administration last week after HMRC took action over an unpaid tax bill of just over £9m.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Mr Whyte claimed that some £4.4m of that total could be attributed to the so-called ‘wee tax case’ which the club has been disputing.

But BBC Scotland has now seen evidence which suggests that statement is not true.

    Full amount

BBC Scotland has seen HMRC documents indicating the £4.1m it froze from Rangers accounts last year to cover the ‘wee tax bill’ has been used for another purpose.

Instead that £4.1m was used to pay VAT due on the £24m Rangers received as an advance on season ticket sales from the London-based finance firm Ticketus.

That means the entire small tax bill, totalling about £4.4m, remains unsettled. BBC Scotland understands the administrators are withdrawing the appeal against it.

And – contrary to Mr Whyte’s claims – the small tax bill is unrelated to the £9m unpaid tax bill. Both have yet to be settled.

With the tax bill rising by more than £1m a month, by the end of February the full amount owed will be close to £15m.

That does not take into account the potential £49m “big bill” faced by the club if it loses a separate tax case.

A spokesman for Craig Whyte said he stood by the statement he made on Tuesday.

Despite this, administrators are confident they can get creditors to agree to a Company Voluntary Agreement, meaning HMRC would get a portion of what they are owed without the club going into liquidation.

However, BBC Scotland understands this is contingent on Craig Whyte no longer being involved at Ibrox.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, has described recent revelations about Rangers’ finances as “very concerning”.

At Holyrood question time, Mr Salmond said administrators faced a very difficult task trying to meet the club’s obligations to taxpayers, keep Rangers in business and save jobs.

The first minister also said his government would support Ibrox workers if and when redundancies were announced
