Legia less appealing, Man City under-grad

1542

Surprised we got two in yesterday, as Manchester City under-grad, Jason Denayer, signed for a year-long loan last night.  The 19-year-old has yet to play first team football so is likely to be considered as backup at Celtic, though reports are promising.

Not surprised that Legia Warsaw have lodged an appeal to Uefa to be re-instated into the Champions League, they have to try everything possible.  It has not been confirmed what ground Legia have appealed on, however, at the weekend, Polish FA chief exec, Zbigniew Boniek, suggested an appeal would be made on two grounds:

That only one member of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was at the hearing to made the decision, and

That Legia were not given the chance to make a submission to the Body.

There are 10 members of the Disciplinary Body and rules state that decisions require the attendance of at least three, unless the case is “urgent”, when a decision can be taken by one member.  To defend their process, Uefa need to insist that the circumstances were urgent, probably citing the Champions League play-off draw, which was due to take place two hours later.

While the Disciplinary Body allow submissions to be made prior to a hearing, Article 34 authorises the Body to undertake a hearing without submissions and “in the absence of one or all of the parties”.

In the unlikely event Legia won an appeal on procedural grounds, a subsequent hearing, perhaps with more Disciplinary Body members in attendance, would take place, and would inevitably reach the same conclusion.

Article 21, paragraph 2, of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations state, “A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.”  There is no ambiguity or lateral for the Disciplinary Body to exercise a different reprimand.

Legia’s appeals can carry on all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but Celtic will not be involved in any future issues.  NK Maribor represent a vastly, vastly, greater risk to their Champions League aspirations.

“You would see it as us being penalised for abiding by the rules. I would see it as common sense being applied. As I said, I don’t believe it was deliberate. Now, the question becomes is it fair that they are kicked out for something that wasn’t deliberate that everyone can see had no effect on the outcome of the tie? For me, I’d be gutted if it was the other way around. We scream for common sense in football all the time, well here’s an opportunity to show some. Remember, I said ‘in theory’, meaning I don’t believe it will happen. I fully expect the decision to stand, and I’ll not complain if it does. There’s no doubt the letter of the law seems to say they have no case. I’m not talking about letter of the law though. I’m talking about (hypothetical) justice.”

Where in there would we have to agree ?

A load of sentimental claptrap masquerading as fairness, everything you base your argument on is the idea that it was an “honest mistake” are you a Scottish referee.

I’ve no time for “honest mistakes” and I’m surprised any Celtic supporter has.

They are appealing a decision that has no grounds for appeal, by using technicalities that clearly have not been breeched either, it’s hardly honest or honourable

    Raberto,

In the interest of morality, shouldn’t Celtic ask UEFA to cancel the results of any games in which a refereeing decision goes for us, a decision which helps us to win a game?

I saw you post about those having an agenda when it comes to criticism the loan deals currently arriving.

With all due respect mate, you used to lead the charge when it came to having a go at Peter Lawwell. Remember writing this a few years ago :

“I am not advocating for a second we follow the championship russian roulette they engage in down there. The figures were just to show we can easily outbud those clubs, even when they behave suicidally

I am just sick of hearing we cant compete with this and that. It is complete garbage. We cant compete with the majority of the EPl, and the elite clubs in Spain, Germany Italy and France. We can compete with virtually anyone else.

We choose not to do so. Apologies for posting this again, however the message is important

Any clown can cut costs and not win”

We went into a tie against Legia with only two Centre Halves at the club, one of whom got suspended and was ineligible for the second leg resulting in having to play our first choice right back out of position.

The manager clearly had a problem with Izzy in that tie but again we had no reserve left back.

We had no No.9 worth talking about – a situation at the club which has been present for over a year.

We will go into a crucial European tie having sold a goalkeeper for £10M (I agree we had to accept the bid) and replacing him with a goalkeeper who hasn’t played at any level n two years.

Barcabhoy, in all seriousness is the above the mark of a well run club ?

You have a go at those criticising the loan strategy. Leaving aside the vocal criticism of loans from Deila prior to his Damascus like conversion, you are right a loan means that if the player is duff we can pass on him. However if either player proves to be a star do you honestly think they will still be at Celtic Park in a year from now ? The loan strategy allows you to cut your losses, but it also means that there is no commitment on behalf of the player.

The last time we went down this route was in 2009/10. We brought in the likes of N’Guemo, Zheng Zhi, Braafheid and Keane. Only the latter was a success and the others were returned to sender. It also meant that Neil Lennon had a huge rebuilding job when he took over in the dugout.

We are going nowhere fast. Peter Lawwell is hanging everyone out to dry. If he gets it in the neck tomorrow night – as I suspect he will – then he has no one to blame but himself.

    PF Ayr-

I think there`s definitely a bit of smoke and mirrors going on and Ronny is being hung out to dry.

The comments a few weeks ago about loan players not being ideal, then loan players come in.

The comments last week about trying to get players in for the Maribor tie. I`m sure that the 19 year old centre half wasn`t signed to be pitched into the Maribor tie. At least I hope not!

Then expectations managed downwards again today with the comments from Ronny that January might be the most productive transfer window for us. The very window where we are being told you can`t get quality players as clubs don`t want to lose them mid-season.

Some of these 500 players that have been watched on DVD must have been of the standard that we want and need and within our price range. Otherwise the filtering of our transfer targets needs sorted. It seems we`re wasting too much time assessing transfer targets who aren`t for accepting £15,000 per week.

  7. Canamaler

So you’re saying the Celtic board wouldn’t try to use any technicality they could until they were told a final ‘no’?

To be moral, should we offer to cancel the results of any games from the past in which we profited from refereeing decisions? Decisions happen all the time of course but we can be special and create new levels of morality.

  15. Whats the point of people hoping that Legia win their appeal.

The way things stand at the moment the only way Legia can progress to the CL is if Celtic are cheated out of their upcoming match.

UEFA will have to disregard its own rules to let Warsaw through.

And that to my mind is cheating of the most blatant kind. And I dont want my team to be cheated on.

You can pontificate all day long on the morality regarding the result and the fixed penalty but at this point in this scenario for Celtic to lose. We will have to be cheated out of it

  18. Raberto67

I wasn’t aware I was talking to you…I came in from work and saw people still discussing Legia when it’s done and dusted as far as I can see.

UEFA won’t uphold Legia’s appeal and we have no part in this any more whether we like it or not, UEFA’s rule book is already one rule for the mega clubs and one rule for the rest of us and I can’t see them setting a precedent over a case between two minnows…

Looking for a moral high ground here is a pointless exercise and I for one wouldn’t agree to a further game against Legia as it would negate UEFA rules in their already skewed running of the game…

Hearing Celtic are reviving their interest in Kim Shin-wook. Tried to get him last season but fee could not be agreed. He was top scorer in K-League last season and has already hit 7 in 8 this season.

  22. In general I’m not bothered.

New management, change of personnel etc it was never going to be a smooth transition.

Legia result was dissapointing, reinstatement embarrassing, but, I’ll take it.

I am happy with where we have been, and where we are now. For us, within the constraints of the Scottish set up we have to cut our cloth accordingly. Until the domestic environment changes there is not much else we can do. I’m happy to be led by a board who are aware of these facts too.

God forbid we should chase an impossible dream, and bankrupt ourselves in the process.

I know I know, there are calls for better management of the money we HAVE spent, and that’s understandable. There are questions over wether Ronny is his own man, or if he will be allowed to be his own man. Only time will tell.

I’ve been a Celtic supporter through thick and thin, I will continue to support my team through thick and thin.

I cannot recall in that time watching a more gutless shower than the jersey wearers last Wednesday night. Disgrace doesn’t come close.

Tell you what, rather than me proving they’re trying to get the manager the sack, how about YOU telling ME how well you think they’re playing and how hard they’re working.

And how they are playing with the same amount of effort they gave their last manager who let them away with being part timers

  27. Gene's a Bhoy's name on

The scene is the rule making committee of uefa – “so we all agree that if a team fields a banned player then they forfeit the game 3-0”.

but of course if it’s an honest mistake then it’s ok- we can all live with that can’t we. What if it’s one of the big teams and we need them in the competition that would be ok as well -we can all live with that can’t we.

    What if…………..etc.

  28. In my opinion, we should stick to the rules.

Say we asked UEFA, or said to UEFA we want to play Legia, we believe it’s only fair.

UEFA would be well within their rights to ask, so we refuse to play Maribor.

If you were PL what would you answer, given if you say we want to play Legia first, UEFA would be within their rights to say, ok, you go ahead and play Legia.

Then they phone Maribor and tell them they have a bye into the CL Group Stages.

Then call PL back and tell him we are now banned from European competition for not abiding by their rules. As this is unprecedented they will take some time to decide how long, but it will be punitive, just to make sure other clubs don’t think about circumventing their rules.

Would everyone’s morality be satisfied then?

Play by the rules as agreed at the beginning of the competition, or pay the price.
