Leigh, Efe, Mikael, Dedryk and Jozo

I got my wish last night, that Leigh Griffiths would reach the 40 goal mark for the season, and what a great goal it was too, memories of Love St ’86. Also delighted Leigh was aware-enough to mimic Henrik’s ” five zero” gesticulation when he reached 50 in 2001.

40 goals for Celtic in a season is a very rare achievement, as Paul John Dykes pointed out this morning, it’s now only been done 13 times in 128 years.  Jimmy McGrory (four times, three in a row) and Henrik Larsson (three times, two in a row), are the only two who have achieved this more than once in their Celtic careers, so Leigh knows what he needs to do next season to get a really special place in the history books.

As for the other pertinent points from last night’s game in Perth, I can cut Stefan Johansen some slack. McDiarmid Park was a farmer’s field not so long ago, and St Johnstone’s first goal looked like it came as a result of a plough intervention.

Efe Ambrose is another story. Last night’s decision to challenge (Logan Bailly) for a ball inside his own six-yard box was inexplicable but consistent with his general awareness this season. When the new manager is in place, someone inside Lennoxtown needs to find the earliest possible moment to sit him down and play the Efe highlights video.

We have a good central defender in Erik Sviatchenko (club captain in the making), and one who could become so in Jozo Simunovic. If Jozo gets himself fit for July we should be well-placed for the qualifiers, but those two aside, we are struggling in central defence.

Out of contract Charlie Mulgrew is in the latter stages of his career, but can be trusted to do a job without causing unnecessary alarm every week. Mikael Lustig’s days as a rampaging full back may be limited by his persistent hip issues, so playing as auxiliary central defender, as he often does for Sweden, works on paper.

I’d be far from confident facing Champions League qualifiers with Efe or Dedryk Boyata, who could still makes Belgium’s Euro’s squad, but if Jozo’s fit, signing a right back, with Mikael covering central defence, feels like an appropriate use of resources.

  1. I read BOyotta had made Belgium’s squad for Euro 2016

maybe it is just a provisional squad

Maybe some Engurland team will but him

  2. Congratulations to Leigh Griffiths…

40 Goals in one Season – Awesome!

Thought he took his goal great, also liked the way the team played yesterday, maybebe not the complete performance but movement and commitment aplenty.

    More of that please…

Signing a right back means two from Janko, Ralston and Fisher have failed to make the grade.

  5. Not too sure about your rating of Simunovic and Eric Paul.We had various experts on here this season saying that Eric was “Too small, too slow,in fact another bad signing”.They have also called Simunovic a “Sick note”because the boy got a broken bone in his knee, and was stamped on,disgracefully,in a Euro game. Then again we had many who would never have had LG in a Celtic strip.

Only last night, someone called Wee Paddy,a “One trick pony”.

Lets be having less of your assumptions Paul, and listen to the experts on this site more.

Sorry, Paul, but I’m sure this must have been done before and it keeps happening. Nice lad but just not good or reliable enough.

Agree with most of what you have said there. I would keep Charlie as he can cover several positions.

A bit worrying that the Simuchenkos have yet to play together and yet they will probably be our starters in the qualifiers.

Lustig has found it tough this season, but has played way more games than the last two seasons. Would like to see Janko/Fisher give him a break every few games.

    Dedrky – can go

    Jozo – tbc

Mikael – needs to prove fitness in pre season or can go

  9. Nope,Boyatta has made the Belgian squad.H,mmph,Belgium, what do they know about players?.A right wee diddy team.Again, why dont they listen to our experts.

We have plenty on here who still would play Efe,because he is a “Nice guy”and it was all Lennys fault anyway for playing him against Juve. And that Bailly was at fault also last night, for not expecting his CH to ram raid him as he went up to take an easy catch. The world of football is missing out not reading the expertise on this blog.

Along with Johansen, Izzy, Boyata K Roberts and good few more including James Forrest who is off anyway.

Great news about Still Game.Playing Golf over in Thailand, met up with Paul Riley and a couple of his mates.Had a couple of great nights with them, then Paul announced he was flying back to Glasgow,as Greg Hemphill had him a ticket for a League Cup semi against the dead team.It was the semi that Dutch lump of wood scored the screamer in.FFS.A right Tim,through and through.

    Now off to rinse mouth.

  17. I have a question for you, what positions would you like to see strengthened and who would you like to bring in to the Celtic squad for the new season ?

Personally I would like an anchorman in the Wanyama mold an outside left who can score and create and a massive targetman, however I don’t know who I would go for, any suggestions ?

  20. Maybe Ajer could be the Anchorman however he is very young, as for targetman I think someone like Lacina Traore could be good, huge but mobile however he has to be outside our wage structure by now as for the outside left I can’t think of anyone. I would love for Celtic to look at the south American market.

I would think that Eric looks as though he could play the Wanyama role very effectively. The left winger. We could do a lot worse than Johnny Hayes. As for the massive target man,I had heard that the new boy Ajer,is very good in this position.Seems he prefers up front.Who knows.

Been looking occasionally at the list of 16/17 Champion’s League qualifying teams as it slowly fills, the most recent noticed being Bulgaria’s Ludogorets. Their co-efficient ranking of 25.625 is below ours (40.46) and we look fine to be seeded through to the Group Stages for so long as we remain in it.

41 champion teams play three rounds and a play-off stage, all to be one of 5 winners of the golden ticket to the Group Stages. Olympiakos (70.94) and Victoria Pizen (44.585) are ahead of us in ranking and drop in at the third round.

Only Red Bull Salzburg (42.52), of the second round qualifers so far, are ranked higher than Celtic as I understand the position and there are only eight more champions to be added here where we start the process. Poland’s Legia Warsaw (28.00) aren’t included yet and I don’t think any teams in Denmark or Israel are ranked above us. One of the blog’s Middle East experts will be able to confirm that.

Good times for Celtic, champions of Scotland.

  24. Eric is a smashing player but I think his best position is in the centre of defence he reads the game well and is a great team mate to help out when you need it most I like him where he is. Future captain for sure.

    Hail Hail.

  25. I’d like to see big Eoghan O’Connell back from Cork City and given a run out.

He looked good in the few games he had at Celtic and has had rave reviews while at Cork.

  26. Congrats LG on your 40th goal last night, and what a peach it was too, as for St Johnstone hackers and cloggers, only way they would have scored is the way they did, we gave them two goals, unlike others I won’t go into detail on how the goals came about, like many teams in the SPFL St J would get football banned, who the f… Would want to watch that every week? No idea what attacking football is about never mind entertainment, this is the main reason crowds are down, no one wants to watch this, you’ll get a good game from Aberdeen, Hearts, and that’s it, the rest are merde, oh and were told the new club coming up this season will be our toughest opponents, cough, cough, aye right, the match officials are the problem there , not the new club,.

And those who are making Sunday they’r last game? I wish you well obviously your heart wasent in it in the first place, and it wasent what you thought it would be I get that. It’s a different breed nowadays that’s the way it goes, and many (the malcontents) in here say ” they know lots who won’t be renewing they’r SB, REALY , may be its the company they keep?

I don’t know anyone from my crowd who are not renewing, and there are lots, so to the kite flyers and mischief makers, lurking Huns, and the rest of thos negative posters, any chance you could make your last post in here on Sunday night? And just feck right off, and let us Tims get on with supporting our club CFC.

My apologies to those in here also who are deep in talks of the Middle East, you could also jump on that train as well and feck right off.
