Leigh, Efe, Mikael, Dedryk and Jozo

I got my wish last night, that Leigh Griffiths would reach the 40 goal mark for the season, and what a great goal it was too, memories of Love St ’86. Also delighted Leigh was aware-enough to mimic Henrik’s ” five zero” gesticulation when he reached 50 in 2001.

40 goals for Celtic in a season is a very rare achievement, as Paul John Dykes pointed out this morning, it’s now only been done 13 times in 128 years.  Jimmy McGrory (four times, three in a row) and Henrik Larsson (three times, two in a row), are the only two who have achieved this more than once in their Celtic careers, so Leigh knows what he needs to do next season to get a really special place in the history books.

As for the other pertinent points from last night’s game in Perth, I can cut Stefan Johansen some slack. McDiarmid Park was a farmer’s field not so long ago, and St Johnstone’s first goal looked like it came as a result of a plough intervention.

Efe Ambrose is another story. Last night’s decision to challenge (Logan Bailly) for a ball inside his own six-yard box was inexplicable but consistent with his general awareness this season. When the new manager is in place, someone inside Lennoxtown needs to find the earliest possible moment to sit him down and play the Efe highlights video.

We have a good central defender in Erik Sviatchenko (club captain in the making), and one who could become so in Jozo Simunovic. If Jozo gets himself fit for July we should be well-placed for the qualifiers, but those two aside, we are struggling in central defence.

Out of contract Charlie Mulgrew is in the latter stages of his career, but can be trusted to do a job without causing unnecessary alarm every week. Mikael Lustig’s days as a rampaging full back may be limited by his persistent hip issues, so playing as auxiliary central defender, as he often does for Sweden, works on paper.

I’d be far from confident facing Champions League qualifiers with Efe or Dedryk Boyata, who could still makes Belgium’s Euro’s squad, but if Jozo’s fit, signing a right back, with Mikael covering central defence, feels like an appropriate use of resources.

Absolutely not. Was trying clumsily to refute the suggestsions that a season ticket is the only real option to support The team. Ill attend every home game I can. But not when the 7,500 fans of Triggers Broom FC are there to pollute the atmosphere.

Oh and I do notice your reference to my soon to be retired from part time early morning job ;-)

  2. Philbhoy – I stand by what I said regardless of the personal attack on Tom Rogic, a guy a few weeks back stayed on when he suffered from concussion in a game he provided a winning tackle and superb pass to Paddy Roberts to score with.

The guy’s a footballer who should play to his strengths which are quick feet, a good football brain, a box of tricks and a wicked shot (Kilmarnock perhaps ?). I’d hope he’s a keeper for us and the new man. The fact that you want you want to pick up on ‘tackling’ suggests that perhaps the culture of our game looks for all the wrong things – my original point.

Hopefully Moyes gets the Everton job. Although De Boer left Ajax earlier today…

  5. Fenerbahce’s Fernandao, was in Effe’s pocket I think not he put the fear in our defence as soon as he hit the field, brilliant player check him out.

  7. A lot of talk on here about punting Efe, Izzy & a few others. It’s not just that easy to punt players. As fa as I know both Efe & Izzy have contracts to end of June 2017.

If a Club comes in for them and they are happy to leave then OK otherwise they stay on the books for another year.

I think Charlie Mulgrew & Darnell Fisher will be out of contract this June but beyond those 2, I don’t know of anyone else.

  9. Extract from a Mail Online Article:

Manchester United’s root-and-branch recruitment review will see one of their top jobs go to a scout who doesn’t physically watch football.

The unusual post – advertised as a ‘scouting auditor’ – is hoped to offer a fresh perspective to their floundering system.

Thinking behind the role is that it will evolve into one of the senior positions at Old Trafford and act as a form of quality control when identifying transfer targets.

It is understood the new scouting auditor will not be expected to watch any matches themselves, not taking in any players personally.

They will, however, have the final scouting decision on who United should splash the cash on by collating various reports filed by other scouts.

Scores and notes from those in the field will be traded off against each other before the auditor – who must resist the temptation to watch any footage – takes an informed decision in discussions with Woodward and the manager.

Wonder if they got the idea from PL?

    Philbhoy,

I don’t think you understand the context the word was being used, he has been clear for the last three years that he knew the boards thinking was and was simply relaying that thinking, get it yet ?

He was proud to declare himself a tool of the board.

That aside, it’s a bit rich coming from you, regularly calling people a prick, thinking you have any place to call anyone out on personal abuse charges.

I was looking back into the Transfer Committee at Liverpool and why Fenway SG, set it up. Brendan Rodgers didn’t want to work with a Director of Football, so they created the Transfer Committee instead (apparently).

Here’s an article from The Guardian 7/2015, which gives a synopsis of how each of the EPL teams does things re player recruitment.

Fair play to Dedryck on making the Euros. I wonder how many of our players will get a call-up? Is Kazim- Richards still involved with Turkey?

What’s happened to the mighty CKR? Fellow started to put a performance together versus Hearts, then hasn’t featured in the subsequent 2 matches.

    Injured? What?

    ——–

Some of the team including Ronny were in a Glasgow establishment the night of the Hearts game. CKR was up to no good that night, my good mate witnessed it. Let’s just say he wasn’t taking any prisoners. He hasn’t been seen since.

  19. A good way to ensure fans might attempt to come back, and assure them that they’ll be welcomed is to insult them at every opportunity. Works every time.

I don’t want another potentially big salary for a player who doesn’t deliver.

We’ve got loads of them on the books already.

As I’m sure you are aware.

Jobo Baldie – RE your comment earlier about moving from the main stand to different parts of the ground. My old seat was in the main stand and when I moved to the JS lower I couldn’t believe the difference on offer from the food stands, outlets etc, they even had hand towels in the toilets FFS….They even had that many hand towels stewards were handing them out at the top of the stairs to wipe the rain of your seat…

Ditto, only difference is your a self righteous man up yourself blind to your own failings while you can cast aspersions.

No denial because you know I’m right, so distract.

  26. Phillbhoy

Of course. They are all opinion pieces but the level of inconsistency has been a team trait this year, down in huge part to why Ronny is leaving us.

A better, more settled, consistent team is the least we can expect from hopefully a top drawer manager next season.

Ronny signed off today with a message to the Celtic support. “I want to thank all the fans. The relationship I’ve had with them has been very good.

“I wish them all the best. This club is special and they have to understand that and protect it. Everyone wants to drag it down and wants us to lose so it’s important to have unity and the players need support.”

And the a prediction about what’s to come; “It’s so important to be united and to support the team like they do. Then there will be a lot more trophies.”

Everyone wants to drag it down. Worth remembering that before adding to the mountain of negativity Celtic experience in Scotland.
