  1. How can it be the worst result in Celtic’s history when we’re not out? If we win 5-0 at home, will you still think tonight was our worst ever result?

I can think of several worse results in our history.

  2. the glorious balance sheet on

No doubt the pitch was a leveller and it was hot but how many saves did we force in 95 minutes?

Against a team of guys who have worked an 8 hour shift as butchers, bakers and candlestick makers earlier today.

How many tackles did we win?

How many minutes of football were wasted by a Celtic player – most often brown – standing fannying with the ball 10 yards inside our half before playing either a square ball or a pass to someone with 2 red imps tight on them?

Mistakes that we’ve seen before from the same suspects. Dudu’s diddies – Ambrose and Bitton. One can’t judge the bounce of a ball, the other plays like he wears a spacesuit specially made for giant haystacks, he is that slow.

We are nowhere near ready for the Europa league group stages, far less the CL

No doubt a ludogorets or similar type team will put us out of our misery in the next qualifying round.

50 years ago we started our European cup winning campaign. The Lisbon lions didn’t win every game they ever played but none of them ever feigned injury to try and be subbed in a semi-final. They took pride in the jersey and hurt like mad when they lost.

Bitton, ciftci, janko Ambrose etc – all were signed by a man in a suit, that knows feck all about football, on the instigation of a spiv agent looking to make a fast buck telling them how great they are and how they deserve to be EPL players. They’re here because the suits in charge at Celtic lost sight of the fact that we’re a football club geared up to challenge for trophies, not a glorified recruitment agency that hopes to make a fast buck by polishing turds and selling them to England

Ok Foxy ,tell me one player in this team tonight who is better than Sammy?

Look at his last 20 games for Celtic results and look at the 1st 20 games since he left.

    Hope you do.

  4. Brendan must be wondering what he has got himself into – will he bail out to save his reputation? I would not be surprised.

If the next leg was tomorrow I would not be going – sickened but NOT surprised.

  5. in some sick way this result will hopefully accelerate the need for signings of the quality we need. BR now knows that despite looking decent in training , this group of players NEVER wins when its ugly – they never find a way like great teams do. This has nothing to do with ability , it has everything to do with mentality!! pure and simple! Scott brown is not a leader of men on the park , i’m sure he is a good example off the park – we need a leader on the park – someone to drive and dictate. brown for me hasn’t done this for 2 years!

Honeymoon over – now its time for BR to build playing confidence and get the players in of CELTIC standards which have been allowed to drop during years we should have been out of sight!!

  6. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

We needed to beat a defender tonight. Anyone have an idea why Roberts wasn’t employed wide ?

  7. Just in from watching game at my daughters, my goodness is my year going to get any better

    That was absolutely woeful

I have not read one single post

    But

There are several players that should never be seen in a Celtic Jersey again

One of those many of you think deserves a chance – why are we accepting some of the standard of players we have

    Abysmal

And not interested in very early and season not started

We are supposed to be a professional football team

There was nothing professional in that performance

  8. I hope none of you had to endure the pain of watching the match via a Gibraltan TV stream. Made Rob McLean seem like a master of commentary.

  9. Paddy Roberts must be delighted he requested to miss England U19s euro tournament to sit on the bench in Gibraltar watching that.

  10. Through A Green Glass Brightly on

It ain’ t over till it’s over – and it ain’t over yet as Aristotle was wont to say.

  11. Just on and almost frightened to read back. Some observations:

The pitch was an absolute disgrace.

Red Imps are a team used to winning at their level on their own (poor) pitch.

When the pitch is poor and your opponents want to play a physical game then you better be prepared to match them instead of trying to play football. It reminded me of the game against Clyde in the Scottish Cup. You need to win the physical battle to earn the right to play football. Our players are not robust enough.

We had mixed fortune in that, IMO, we scored a legitimate goal, we hit woodwork twice and the goalie made excellent saves from Dembele and Griffiths. We were also very fortunate not to lose another two goals.

I don’t understand why managers continue to play poor players. Efe Ambrose is a disaster on legs. I have lost count of the number of times he has let us down in big games. Managers need to realise that guys like Efe eventually get them the sack. Efe should never play for Celtic again. I don’t care how nice a guy he is.

Brendan must ask himself why he played Griff, a 40 goal striker, out of position. You play your best players in their best positions. Dembele hasn’t earned the right to start as the main striker before Griffiths, especially in a European game.

No doubt other aspects of tonight’s game will come to me later but the above are enough to be starting with. I’m not going to be irrational about it. I’m confident that we’ll win through next week but improvement is required. The manager needs to be decisive and get rid of players who cannot be relied on.

I’ll watch with interest what happens in the coming weeks.

Many of our players are far too lightweight. Christie for one looked out of his depth. Some were just plain chicken-hearted. Bitton, Forrest.

  12. AngelGabriel, I do also think BR is correct in his statement, we will go through.

I’m sure the manager will be assessing his squad, and will either replace underachievers, or get a lot more from them. He doesn’t seem the type who will accept repeated performances like that.

We could have scored a couple, sure, but we didn’t, think we will next week.

    You shouldnt be enjoying yourself.

It just shows you what you understand about football if you think LG was in midfield.

  14. Mats –

It says it all that you think Brendan could quit to save his reputation.

So where would he get a job with a reputation as a quitter?

    BBC News :

“Celtic suffered arguably the worst defeat in their history when they were humbled by Gibraltarian part-timers Lincoln Red Imps in the Champions League second qualifying round.

A Lee Casciaro goal early in the second half was the difference, the forward outfoxing Efe Ambrose to score.

Leigh Griffiths twice hit the bar, but Celtic could not salvage anything from Brendan Rodgers’ first game in charge.

The second leg is at Celtic Park next Wednesday.

And while the Scottish champions remain favourites to progress to the third qualifying round, serious improvement will be needed.

    Merited victory for part-timers

The result was no more than Lincoln Red Imps deserved having more than matched their illustrious opponents in terms of work rate and desire.

European performance will be the yardstick by which Rodgers is judged, with Champions League defeats against Malmo, Maribor and Legia Warsaw casting a shadow over predecessor Ronny Deila’s two years in charge.

Rodgers spoke pre-match of his pride in taking charge for the first time but the reality is that this will rank as the most embarrassing result of his career to date.

A goalless first half perhaps gave some indication of the task facing Celtic.

The visitors dominated possession from the start but struggled to find their rhythm, on a less-than-ideal artificial surface and in the face of a tigerish Red Imps side who defended well, impishly swarming around Griffiths and Moussa Dembele at every turn.

The hosts had the first chance when Liam Walker forced a routine save from goalkeeper Craig Gordon after some tidy approach play, while moments later Celtic had a goal disallowed after Dembele jumped with goalkeeper Raul Navas to contest a Scott Brown free kick.

‘Biggest shock in the history of European football’

Lee Casciaro (left) puts the ball past Craig Gordon to give Lincoln Red Imps a famous win

Lee Casciaro (left) puts the ball past Craig Gordon to give Lincoln Red Imps a famous win

Celtic needed to up the ante in the second half but it was the Red Imps who struck. Casciaro got on the end of a long ball, turned Ambrose and prodded the ball past Gordon.

Just two minutes later, a shell-shocked Celtic had a let off when Antonio Calderon scampered away from a quick free-kick but fired inches over Gordon’s crossbar.

With Celtic facing what Imps captain Roy Chipolina said would be the biggest shock in European football history, Griffiths smashed a shot off the crossbar.

Rodgers, who had earlier introduced James Forrest and Stuart Armstrong, went to the well for the final time and introduced Nadir Ciftci for the ineffective Dembele but the Turk found the lack of service just as frustrating.

Griffiths rattled the crossbar once more from a free kick, and Nir Bitton was denied a tap-in on the rebound by a superb Ryan Casciaro tackle.

Navas then denied Ciftci from a header, palming the ball away, but lacklustre Celtic were left humbled and humiliated by the effervescent underdogs.”

  16. no one is saying we won’t get through , I’m sick fed up of the usual suspects continually letting us down on the pitch, its also amazing how players seem to get better in supporters eyes the longer they are either out of the team either injured or dropped for example CM and DB

  17. AULDTAM@9:17

Regardless of two-legs, tonight was the worst result that I can remember since the sixties – if there were worst results before then, I would like to hear about them.

Make no bones about it, Celtic FC are a laughing-stock throughout the football world tonight.

  18. Ambrose, Bitton, Janko, Brown, four of the starting eleven not good enough and with the exception of Janko have had plenty of chances and let us down over the last year. Forrest can go as well, a coward who hides afte the first tackle on him.

  19. Muscat_Bhoy1264 on

Does this remind anyone of Artmedia Bratislava when Strachan was in charge? Very similar set of circumstances where a famous manager started off quite laidback and then got hammered in Europe.

Here is the team from that night. Strachan had the right idea and realised some of those players were either past it or not good enough. How many survived after that night? This was the starting 11, I can see that about 6 Celtic players who didn’t really play again under Strachan in that team. What do you think?

Well, that would make your eyes bleed. Utter, utter colossal humiliation. We have had months to address the lack of creativity in midfield and the screaming gaps at the center of defense. We did nothing.

No speed, no talent, no skill, no football intelligence, dreadful corners, dreadful crossing, crab like football, less technical ability than a team of part time amateurs.

What was Rodgers thinking? Rogic was doing O.K. Griff is useless out wide. Why are we wearing black in high heat and humidity? Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!

Why is Bitton on? Utterly useless. Why wasn’t Roberts played? Why was Forrest ( utterly useless ) played? Why was he played on the left? Cifti is aptly named Nadir – look it up.Didn’t Rodgers watch any video? Same old, same old, no planning, no preparation. Brown and Bitton should have been gone after losing to the team from Govan. Did any of the other so called favorites lose? Of course they didn’t. A 12 M player on the bench and we don’t play him.

Celtic continue to plumb the depths – a useless, useless team with no skill, speed, creativity or leadership.

We have had months to prepare for this and just like we did the last few seasons, we completely fecked it up

  21. MNCELT

I don’t share your optimism on the same team will get us through next week.

I posted my concern before the match and unfortunately they made my fears come true.

Bitton is the biggest imposter i have ever seen.

With him in a pivotal role we are rudderless ship drifting.

People her know i have been going on about this since beginning of last season.

He can’t tackle.has zero positional sense and is incapable of a forward pass.

In the last to friendlies he displayed all of those qualities.

Why he was picked tonight is baffling.

Brown at least tries but his creativity is lacking.

With these two in the middle the forwards get zero service.

I hope the coach can see it and tonight wanted to prove a point.

If not then i have my doubts.

  22. What has Brendan learned from tonight. Imo we need a centre half, teams are able to play through us, an attacking mid, existing two are slowing play down, a big striker, not Cifcti, to play off, boom and we are away, still positive.

    Mate.

The football world doesn`t notice Celtic.

    Sadly.

  24. Jerry Cornelius on

Jerry cornelius – as poor as some of them can be they won the league by 15 points last season.

Should we welcome you to the blog? You new?

Yeah….. been on here since 2005

  25. It may not be the worse result in our history, but it’s a shocker.

I watched Celtic in the late 50’s and early 60’s when we won nothing.

But we failed while trying our hardest.

Not like this bunch of talentless, gutless, overpaid imposters, and the new manager gets NO credit tonight.

He identified the players he THOUGHT could do a job for him, us, the club tonight.

And they were, almost to a man, pish.

    Where to now Brendan?

You sign quality or you do a Ronny (God bless ‘I’m).

    With baited breath I await.

  26. Big Peat of Islay on

A team of overpaid prima donnas being told that they wwere unlucky, that they dominated possession, that they had done enough to get the result, but it didn’t happen on the night???????????
