Lustig, Samaras and problems after World Cup 98

1000

We’ll all be supporting Mikael Lustig and Georgios Samaras as Sweden and Greece attempt to qualify for the World Cup tonight but the prospect of Lustig, Samaras, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Forster and possibly van Dijk not having a break until July, days before the Champions League bandwagon starts rolling again, is unappetising.

Celtic contributed more players to the 1998 World Cup than any other team.  Perhaps as a consequence, we started the new season in third gear, unable to string two league wins together until thumping five goals past a now defunct outfit.  A Perfect Day.

Georgios, Mikael, Emilio and Efe are hugely important players to Celtic.  They are also players we have an excellent chance of retaining, which in some respects makes it even more important that they are ready for action early than those like Fraser, who until he signs his new contract we can be less sure of retaining.

Best of luck to Greece and Sweden tonight, but if your guys return home disappointed there will be compensations.

Ross County have won the respect of many, and rightly so, for building a successful football club from little more than sticky backed tape and empty washing up bottles, but one of their key achievers, manager Derek Adams, has to be one of the most ungracious people in the top fight game, a fact now being picked up in the wider media.

It is unfathomable if this trait is a fundamental aspect of the club’s success.  The clichéd football manager is an unapproachable tyrant but surely there’s more to it than that?

I’ve heard a good few footballers tell their tales of drama, they all have them, even the quiet ones, but it is an objective fact that Frank McAvennie has more stunning stories than anyone in the game.  I’ve heard him tell some publicly, and then listened to the really incredible stuff privately.

The Untold Truth with Frank McAvennie, is at Victoria’s Night Club this Saturday 23rd.  Doors open at 7pm for a three course meal, entertainment and Frankie recounting his stories.  There will also be a sporting auction and a Q&A session.  Book at www.franktalks.co.uk

Billy Price scored the equaliser at the R…..s end with a beautiful left foot drive.

    PRESS STATEMENT

    Friday 13th July 2012

The Member Clubs of The Scottish Football League have today voted to willingly accept The Rangers Football Club as an Associate Member of The Scottish Football League. Furthermore, The Scottish Football League’s only acceptable position will be to place Rangers F.C. into the Third Division of the IRN-BRU Scottish Football League from the start of this season, 2012/13.

This decision followed our tried and tested process and was taken in cognisance of the other option which was available for consideration and approval.

Today’s decision has been one of the most difficult for all concerned, but it has been taken in the best interests of sporting fairness which is the fundamental principle of The Scottish Football League.

The Scottish Football League has been entirely consistent in our willingness to work with other bodies to ensure that we focus on rebuilding our game, restoring pride in our game and exploring revenue streams which allow the game to prosper. Our willingness to achieve these aims does not alter.

    Agreement on transfer of membership

    Friday, 27 July 2012

Joint statement on behalf of The Scottish FA, The Scottish Premier League, The Scottish Football League and Sevco Scotland Ltd.

Following the completion of all legal documentation, the Scottish Premier League will conduct the formal transfer of the league share between RFC (IA) and Dundee FC on no later than Friday 3rd August 2012. At this point, the transfer of Scottish FA membership will be complete.

    Transfer of membership

    Friday, 03 August 2012

The Scottish FA can confirm that The Rangers Football Club Ltd have today received confirmation that full membership of the Association has been transferred.

    =======================================================================

We know that on the 13th July 2012 “The Ranger Football Club” (aka Sevco Scotland Ltd) was admitted to the 3rd division of the SFL.

We know also that RFC(IA) were the registered shareholder of an SPL share until 3rd August 2012.

The SFA Article 6.2 tells us two very important things.

    1. A club or association shall be admitted as a registered member automatically by reason of its being admitted as a member of an Affiliated Association or an Affiliated National Association, or in the case of a club through membership of or participation in an association, league or other combination of clubs formed in terms of Article 18

    2. A registered member shall not be a member of more than one Affiliated Association or more than one Affiliated National Association.

The key thing here is not the timing of the transfer of the full membership of the SFA. It is the fact that both clubs were REGISTERED members of the SFA during the period 13th July 2012 – 3rd August 2012 through membership of their respective leagues.

RFC(IA) as members of the SPL (remember RFC(IA) got voting rights on all SPL business on Sevco’s application to join the SPL) and Sevco Scotland Ltd as associate members of the SFL – were both members of the SFA during this critical period.

The transfer of FULL membership was a transfer between two clubs who were separately REGISTERED members of the SFA.

Unless the clubs were merged – and I have seen nothing to suggest they have been – how can these two distinct clubs be one and the same?

The SFA have (to my knowledge) never said they are the same club.

  16. The following is the match report from Scotland/Norway. Seems really snidey and almost disappointed that we won. When did we get so cocky that a four game undefeated run would be viewed so negatively?

Scotland emerged from their final match of the year with a narrow and somewhat ill-deserved victory over Norway.

Scott Brown scored the only goal of the evening after the Scots had survived several scares.

Gordon Strachan’s focus has always been on results though and this victory means his side are now undefeated in their last four games.

They now have four months before their next fixture, as they finish 2013 on a high.

Despite the positivity and good feeling that has built up around the Scotland team in recent months under Gordon Strachan, the overall performance here was as poor as anything produced by the national side this year.

But the record books will not reflect that. Instead they will show another away victory, to add to those earned in Croatia and Macedonia, which will mean a further rise in the Fifa rankings for the Scots.

    Against the run of play?…

Norway lost despite having 19 shots on goal to Scotland’s three.

Scott Brown scored with his side’s only shot on target

The goal came against the flow of the game, which had largely been directed towards David Marshall’s goal.

Charlie Adam, one of several Scotland players performing below his best, tried to bundle his way into the Norwegian penalty area and though he found no way through, the ball broke to Brown whose first-time shot skipped off the sodden turf and past Orjan Nyland.

It was harsh on the hitherto dominant hosts, who were guilty of passing up a number of chances before and after Brown’s strike.

The best of those fell to Marcus Pedersen as Mohammed Abdellaoue picked him out 10 yards from goal.

But though his side-footed effort was on target, Marshall saved well with his legs.

The Scotland goalkeeper saved well again from Pedersen with just 12 minutes remaining, to preserve the clean sheet for a third consecutive game.

That had looked unlikely early on, as Scotland struggled to find their touch and retain possession.

But a combination of good fortune and poor finishing denied the Norwegians the breakthrough their play arguably deserved, summed up in the 90th minute by Anders Konradsen’s narrowly misdirected shot.

The Scotland manager resisted the temptation to put on numerous substitutes, but few of the fringe players did enough to suggest they will be starters when competitive matches return next September.

The challenge of Bertie Auld ( a guy I love ) on Davie Provan that day was the most cowardly assault I have ever seen on a football field in my life.

    I had a close-up view of it.

It was a totally unnecessary affront to decency.

*you must have been in the ayebroke coshed as that’s where it happened, I was in the Celtic end and my view that day was big provan having a lunge at wee ten thirty who on seeing it coming pulled the ball back and provan broke his own leg. BTW FYI Bertie made provan either his assistant manager or first team coach when he took the Thistle job. Bertie speaks well of him saying he devoted a lot of time to disadvantaged kids.

I dogged school one Tuesday afternoon and I was in the Jungle and saw Bobby Murdoch scoring two against the deid lot as we won 3 – 2. Not sure what year but early sixties I think

*November 1962 we won 3-2 after extra time in a Glasgow Cup tie with Paddy Crerand getting our other goal, one of the few times we beat them after the 7-1 game until the same tournament in 1965. I was delivering the Evening Times roon the Haldane when a big bluenose told me. In typical Celtic fashion back then after beating the Harry Wraggs in the semis we lost tae the Hi Hi in the final
