Madden, gambling and decisions you cannot explain

363

I was pretty nonplussed when Bobby Madden was appointed for our game against Newco at Celtic Park last season. His favourite team is neither here nor there, but elements of his performance gave grounds for concern.

He should have red carded Jason Holt for his dangerous lunge on Patrick Roberts. The same card should have been shown to Clint Hill and awarded a penalty for the scything of Leigh Griffiths. Kenny Miller could have been sent off for a two-footed lunge at Stuart Armstrong. These incidents were not merely in favour of one team, they could clearly affect betting markets.

Money can be made on more than just the result in football games. You can bet on a red card being awarded, or not. If Madden awarded Celtic that late penalty, he would had no choice but to dismiss (already booked) Hill. The Halliday challenge had to either be ignored, or result in a sending off. So Madden didn’t even award a foul.

For a man with the length and extent of Bobby Madden’s gambling issue, this raises red flags. Thousands can be made on knowing the outcome of a seemingly innocuous element of a game of football – like ‘Will there be a red card?’ Only for the game against Newco at Celtic Park, there was nothing innocuous about that question.

Madden cost Celtic two points the last time these teams met at Celtic Park and stopped our then-18 game winning run. Betting markets were influenced at the same time. I fear we are in for more of the same tomorrow.

The SFA have a duty of care to ensure our game is clean of betting influence, this must include a clear acknowledgement of referees gambling histories.  I’d avoid betting on tomorrow’s game, it is susceptible to unusual events.

A good few years ago,Sutton The Evil Genius was in midfield for us.

I said to my kid sis-that Arteta’s starting to boss the midfield. Time to nail him.

Chris duly did. Fantastic block tackle,Arteta chucked it on the spot.

Moral-win the battles. (But win them fairly)

Nice of you to notice, even nicer of you to say so! It has been a fair while since I last ventured on. Had to see what all the fuss was about re Paul’s piece on Madden. An unusually direct move, hopefully backed up by proof. Unclear as to the motive re the timing of this, if Paul knew, why not last week, last month, why now?

Anyway, 2-1 to the good guys, and a massive welcome home to Stan Petrov who will be attending with his son later today!!

When writing something of that nature, proof is a must. Otherwise resort to innuendo.

The latter is the province of many a blogger. Not Paul,I reckon.

I think he ‘has the goods!’

I’m in no doubt that Paul has the proof to back up his headline!

Saw a highlights reel last night which included footage of Brian Laudrup getting halved and then Di Canio stepping up to share his opinions with that coward Ferguson, a bit of that early on today from Broony will go down just fine!

    My selective memory ??????

In your original post you STATED ” A DOZEN Celtic Pundits etc”

You then ONLY stated TWO ex Celtic Pundits ( Lennon and Commons) after I asked you to provide evidence of the DOZEN that you had written about….you come back with only TWO….one of whom has become a Soup taker….Selective Memory ?

I can only imagine you cheering like feck today should a Celtic player decides to be really stupid and maybe cost Celtic the match by getting himself sent off for “Going in Late”.

As for me being naïve ???????….You don’t know me….Im as feckin street wise as they come !

You shouldn’t make statements about folk you don’t know…lesson No.1

  11. Unlike others on here today obviously I believe that today is a day for cool Celtic

heads….to “Go in Late” on Hun players will only serve one purpose…it will suit the Orange Ref and the Huns !

All my long life at Celtic v Hun games…I have only asked for ONE thing from Celtic…..”Play fitba Celtic…and usually you will take the Hun mob to the feckin cleaners” !

cool heads and Celtic fitba on the deck…it’s the way to go Celts….Just Dae it !

  14. Good morning, friends.

In half an hour I begin my journey to Celtic Park to see The Champions play.

Today’s fixture is still, of course, relatively new and is only the 9th meeting of the Clubs.

We have a pretty decent record – 6 wins, 2 draws, 21 goals scored and 6 conceded.

    Our goalscorers are –

    5 – Dembele

    4 – Sinclair

2 – Griffiths, McGregor and Armstrong

1 – Lustig, Boyata, Rogic, Sviatchenko and Commons.

Trust you and yours are all well.

  17. Big Jimmy,

The physical part of this game cannot be overlooked. I think a large part of MON’s success was buying players who would intimidate their OldCo counterparts. Sutton, I believe, has spoken at length about his verbals with Ferguson before the 6-2 game.

There’s no doubt that players like Joos, Bobo, Sutton, and Lenny (not forgetting the incredible robust and strong Henke) were more than capable of holding their own in a battle.

However, you are correct in that winning in the modern game is all about possession, and control. Flying into tackles is a loss of control; getting angry and giving away fouls means loss of possession. Of course, if the referee lets you away with this it might work as a tactic….

… But I suspect only partially. Brendan is a footballing manager. He understands and clearly loves the modern game, and thinks deeply about the best way to play it. I suspect “the physical battle” will have been emphasised in his preparation, but will make up only a small part of Celtic’s gameplan today.

Dont think the piitch condition will suit us today.Love St last night was heavy looking and treacherousHope better attention is paid to the footwear today.Apart from that,I can see no comparisons between the teams.Apart from Hibs, who were so unlucky, any teamthat has had a go at them has gubbed them

    Morning All.

Personally, I can’t get too excited about this game to be honest.

I can’t stand the false MSM hype and all the crap that goes with it. The Press demand hype, controversy, scandal, innuendo and all that I dislike. If there is trouble or hatred or bile or whatever that is even better for them.

Further, this is like going to see a rachehorse take on a donkey or a pantomime horse. I will go to watch Celtic but I have no interest at all in the phoney ponies and their corporate jockies, temporary trainers, and all their blinkered supporters.

It is a game of football and in any game anything can happen.

But it is not a traditional fixture (thank God because they were bilious and horrible social spectacles before during and after) and the only thing that could possibly be worse is the faux traditional fixture.

Anyway, Celtic to win and all Celtic men and women to get to the game safely, enjoy the result and then go and get on with a joyous and peaceful festive season.

Hopefully the whole thing is forgotten about soon and we can all move on to other things, play properly registered and licensed teams and enjoy one another’s company in the new year.
