Madden semi-final ref, what were the odds?

1107

What were the odds of Bobby Madden being appointed referee for our Scottish Cup semi-final against Newco?  Fairly short, I would imagine.  All we want from Bobby is a fair crack of the whip.  When a Newco player lunges with both feet off the ground at Patrick Roberts, we don’t expect him to be distracted by checking his watch.  When Leigh Griffiths is taken down, waist high, inside the box, before his opponent can get near the ball, we expect a penalty.

Such expectations were not on the coupon previously but are not too much to ask.

I don’t mind being called an arsehole or a prick or whatever but I draw the line at that.

I’m a birdwatcher of sorts, and know a bit about a few species, but I don’t go chasing about all over the place just so I can catch a glimpse of something I haven’t seen before. No harm to them, but they’re obsessives.

I don’t think the problem is with our strikers … all of whom, I think, are top notch.

But, we play this plodding possession game, while the zombies, because they don’t have the same level,of skill or fitness, take more risks and play quicker. That can work against lower caliber opposition, but would see them get hammered against better teams (like in Europe).

The problem for us is that, like many teams that have adopted the Barca possession style, it is not our natural game, and we don’t do it very well (but few clubs can). While Barca dominate by passing and moving, we sort of smother SPL teams, and wear them down. It can be effective, but is not always very exciting

I think the problem is not with our strikers per se (they would score a barrowload in a more wide open system like the one the zombies play), or even with the midfield (who should be, but aren’t, creating chances). I see the problem as mostly with the system that is being coached.

Dunno Ernie, I imagine someone on here has access to that info, but I don’t think it will shine a favourable light on Celtic’s players!

    ###

It may be confirmation bias (ie you just see what you want to see) but I get the impression that Celtic just aren’t very good at corners. If that’s the case, and other teams are aware of it, it probably encourages them to park the bus.

I don’t think we should be setting up in a similar and predictable fashion every game, regardless of opposition.

Have a look at the opponents, set up accordingly. Dundee were crying out for a hammering,we set up like we were playing Dortmund.

I’m all for continuity of a system, aye, but we come unstuck against quality like PSG,and against pish like Dundee. So obviously the system works well enough overall, but frankly it’s pish when we play pish and an embarrassment when we play quality.

  19. Brendan Rodgers in The Herald:

“He (Edouard) came in and you could see his pace and movement that night and he got his goal, so he did very well,” said Rodgers.

“He’s been great in his time here. He’s a very young player who never gets too carried away or shows too much emotion. But he’s a very good talent and it’s been brilliant to work with him.

“Of course, he’s a player you always want, there’s no question for me. A boy at that age, with those qualities, he’s only going to get better. But we always have to respect his club, he’s a signed player for PSG. They might have other plans for him, so it’s something that we’ll speak to them about between now and the end of the season.

“What I do know is that he’s loving his time here. He’s taken to living in Glasgow and settled in really well. According to the people in Paris, they’ve seen him become a man in his time here, in terms of how he’s developed physically and as a player playing at a big club. You can only hope that you can continue with that player at your club. There’s an option there, but reports in terms of the numbers are quite wide of the mark really. But it’s private, that will be between the clubs.

“There’s other bits around it as well which will need clarifying, but it’s a deal that is doable, there’s no question about that.”

Rodgers believes that people are placing far too much stock in the fact that Edouard has spent a lot of time on the bench this season, and is keen to clarify just how highly he rates him.

“I think one of my strengths as a manager is spotting talent in young players, and he’s one of the best I’ve worked with,” he said.

“That doesn’t automatically get you into a place, because I have to respect what Moussa Dembele did for me last year as well as Leigh Griffiths.

“But I have my mind totally made up on him.”

It follows that Rodgers would believe rather much is being made of others who are struggling to make much of an impact on his starting eleven at the moment, most notably Charly Musonda and Marvin Compper.

“Charly has got 18 months here, and there is a whole settling in process,” he said.

“When you think where he has come from, playing in the reserves, it is clear he is a talent but it’s just time.

“Marvin brings a lot of experience and he was injured towards the end of our camp in Dubai, and that meant others came in and did well. He respects that.

“Both those players really enjoy it here but at some point, they will want to come in and play.”

Put it in a pub context, say a dozen disparate but like-minded souls. I’d hate it if everyone just went-Aye-every time you mentioned a topic. It would drive me nuts.

But if they all said-Naw-or-shut it,ya prick-I wouldn’t turn my back on years of good company. I’d give them it back in spades. CQN isn’t real life, but it can relate to it sometimes.

Griffiths and Roberts need game time , start them .

I’ve never been convinced by Simunovic and Boyata has given me the fear lately ,mistakes in the past could be masked by our goals scored , unfortunately we have been poor creatively of late when you look at the players and manager we have at disposal ….squeeky bum time shortly if we don’t get it sorted .
