Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

It seems to have escaped the attention of the MSM that their beloved Sevco couldn’t avoid defeat against the mighty Annan Athletic at home.

If they had been in the SPL this year we’d have had the League won by Christmas.

When I am asked whether I honestly miss rangers (let’s face it, usually by a supporter of the former club)

    My response is always:

    ‘No, do you?’

Then I watch as the penny drops and see the fury.

    Hail Hail

  3. Wel done, the champions, again!

Great day out at paradise yesterday. Was ss juniors first title win witnessed live.

Great season from the memories. Barca too!

These are the days that will live long in the young ones memories.

Still have the trophy presentation too! More bubbly. Ah well. The price of success.

    Oh, and a cup final.

  4. First ever post, after been lurking for years. Currently living in Melbourne past 3 years and either need to move to Sydney or Glasgow for work. Just watched game and celebrations from Sunday and realise how much you miss home, family, friends and how blessed I am to call myself a Tim. I also appreciate how fortunate I am to have a choice in these tough times but just wondering if anyone has had to make this decision

    HailHail

  5. BBC Interviewer……………….. “Paul did Celtic miss out, by not playing this new team Sevco 5088?”

Paul67 ” Yes – of course Celtic missed out to an extent, but you don’t buy a season ticket just to play a wee diddy team twice at home”

“But it’s a pity given they got humped by Queens Park, Annan, and Peterhead etc cos the Celtic fans could have had a right laugh with some world record score lines”

Congratulations @OfficialNeil and to everyone at @celticfc on retaining the Scottish Premier League championship title (EG)

  7. I didn’t even know the huns’ score from Saturday until it was mentioned to me at the game yesterday.

It was then brought to my attention that there are only two teams that they have taken maximum points from this season, Queens Park and Clyde. Apparently they can add to this if they beat bottom club East Stirling.

Surely this can’t be right that of a possible 9 teams they may only have had a clean sweep against a third of them???

I mean according to Shug they weren’t going to lose a game this season, so it must be wrong!!

  8. I'm Neil Lennon (tamrabam) on

Just for my clarification, At the time of the huns asset sale

Which company did duff and phelps sell the huns assets to? Was it sevco 5088 or sevco Scotland?

Was CG the sole owner of sevco 5088?

Was CG also the sole owner of sevco Scotland?

Now I have seen the documents that claim CW was a director of sevco 5088

CW also signed a form saying he was to be a director of sevco 5088, before the asset transfer, but did his directorship start, the day he signed the forms or the day that the forms were lodged at companies house?

What Im driving at here is

I think Duff and Phelps sold the assets to sevco 5088

I think the SFA granted a licence to sevco 5088

It looks like CW might have been a director of 5088 at the time of the asset transfer to sevco 5088

But being a director does not make him the owner, how does he own the assets? Is it because he also paid £137,000 to be a part of the team that purchased the assets for 5 million quid? Is there additional evidence to demonstrate that ownership

If so, and its shown that CW was a part of the team involved in the purchase of the assets, what percentage of the assets does he own?

If he does own the assets, what happens about the subsequent investors who believe that they bought the same assets from CG that CW claims to own

    Probably as clear as mud…

  10. The highlight(s) for me yesterday apart from team winning league were seeing so many young ones(boys & girls) in the stadium, the size of the crowd and most of all the unity between fans players and management.

The sight of the full stadium staying to welcome Neil Francis and the lap of honour brought a tear to my eyes.

The future is Green & white.

So last week sevco5088 was an irrelevance as Chuckles shafted(alledgedly) Whyte and Sevco Scotland was all that mattered……….

NOW everybody wants to lay claim to sevco 5088 HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM as they say.

Not posted for a while but wanted to share this to get views..

My dearly departed dad was as good a Tim as you would ever meet – he was also fair minded and objective in relation to football matters. One thing he used to say to me was that he thought the Hun support had a better grip of their club than Celtic fans. He would reflect (at that point in time)that their grip on the club accounted for their relative success. He felt that the way they dealt with RFC Board was to vote with their feet. They basically wouldn’t tolerate some of the stuff that Celtic fans put up with.

To put these comments in context it was during Rangers success years and Celtic’s fallow period in 80’s and 90’s.He didn’t always think ‘faithful through and through’ was a good policy for forcing club development.

Little did he know how much the RFC Board were duping their fans…

However, I wonder how much of his theory still holds true – how much more can Rangers fans put up with? I guess that will partly be answered when season books are put up for sale but I do feel now that as much as I’m loving their troubles – we are potentially entering a much more damaging phase – possibly fatal. No fans = no club.
