Malmo worries over Celtic speed and height

487

The sight of Mikael Lustig checking in at Glasgow Airport this morning was welcome, but we should be pragmatic, six days is little time for a hamstring to remedy itself from what was clearly a concerning injury on Wednesday. Mikael should go through some stringent tests tomorrow morning but if there is any doubt of his fitness, he should not be risked.

Football is a 13 or 14 man game. Ronny will want to make two, possibly three, fatigue or tactical changes. Losing a player early to injury would severely hamper his options, allowing Ronny only one change, if he wants to keep a sub for late game, or extra time, contingencies.  For what it’s worth, I believe the knocks taken by Lustig and Griffiths in the first leg cost us fresh legs, and ultimately territory, leading up to Malmo’s second.

Celtic’s perpetrations went a lot better than Malmo’s over the weekend. A comfortable win with what for all intents and purposes is our second 11, while Malmo put a full-strength team out, restored those suspended for last week’s Celtic game, and lost to lowly Hacken.

Journalists close to Malmo assure me the Swedes hope to tempt Celtic into an attacking formation, just as they did to Salzburg in the last round. Salzburg arrived full of confidence but were picked apart on the break. Celtic’s own pace on the break is one worry for Malmo, who want Celtic to play high up the field.  The other is defending set-pieces. Hacken, who don’t have the height advantage of Celtic, scored from a corner kick on Saturday.

Winning free kicks 30 yards from goal would be useful. This is Kris Commons territory. Kris knows how to put his body between ball and man, and wait for the barge, although James Forrest displayed the same tactical-awareness in the first leg.  I’d have Kris holding a training session tonight: “This is what to do with your first touch, this is where you put your bum, then wait….”

Protect the defence, break quickly through Forrest, Johansen and Griffiths, and allow van Dijk, Boyata, Bitton, Griffiths and Lustig/Ambrose to give Malmo something to worry about at set-pieces, and we’ll win this game.

Awful news about tricoloured ribbon. Let’s hope he makes a full recovery and does not suffer any long lasting symptoms after being assaulted.

Big shock over here following the sudden death of Johnny Lyons of 98fm who hosted an excellent Sunday morning sports programme on the Irish radio station. Johnny was only in his forties and was a huge personality on sports radio. What I liked about Johnny although he was a Leeds fan he did not suffer like many from EPL tunnell vision and frequently had former Celts on the show giving updates on the club’s fortunes.

An interview with John Hartson following his cancer scare was reckoned to be one of the highlights of his career in journalism. Johnny will be greatly missed on Sunday mornings.

My son was at home here in Donegal when he got word of Johnny’s sudden death.

He was shocked and upset at the news, not only at the suddenness of it, but because Lyons had given him his introduction into Sports broadcasting with 98fm and he greatly admired him and liked him.

Jimmynotpaul, just heard that marvellously gifted footballer, Frazer Wright, has beem mutually consented by St Johnstone.

At least our players wont have keep an eye on his shall we say, enthusiatic tackling.

I hope he doesn’t get signed by a premier league club and goes to a lower league club.

  11. Our recent form away from home, Quarabag, Salzburg, Maribor, Astra…. Suggests we’ll secure a draw.

my original prediction 2-2 looks a shout.

Just when you think it cannot get any worse it does. The NUJ has reacted to the news of a further loss of twenty editorial positions at the Herald and Evening Times, the third loss of NUJ members this year. According to Newsquest who now own the titles, it is a result of “substantial weakness in advertising revenue”. Just how do you produce a newspaper without newsmen and women? You don’t. Before too much longer the Herald and the Evening Times might be reporting their own liquidation. They just might, might get it then. Before long you will be the last man standing.

Yes him and Sevcos player of the year McGregor.

A couple of hammer throwers who, as you say, will hopefully end up in the lower leagues.

  16. Mike in Toronto-

Apologies for the tardy reply, in the middle of a busy day, as I am sure you are too.

I was fortunate to dive Cozumel in the 90’s, before the cruiseships and other tourists took over the island. My opinion is that Cozumel has, to a degree been over-exploited.

When it comes to the Caribbean, I favour the more out of the way places. Off the top of my head Turks and Caicos and Bonaire stand out. Both are a wee bit out of the way in terms of accessibility, but well worth the effort. Turks and Caicos especially, the endless reefs are relentlessly protected, with the environmental aspect important to me in my diving choices.

Best dive? Undoubtably an entire day trip out of Townsville, Queensland to the world’s largest organism, the Great Barrier. If you want to continue diving, put that near the top of your bucket list. The other that stands out was Cape Town. The less said about mingling with apex predators over a ton the better, don’t want to put you off… :-)

  17. Just after leaving Tricoloured Ribbon…passed on all your good wishes, got the thumbs up…it will take more than thugs and cowards to put the Wee Man down…keep up the prayers,He has a tough road ahead..

Dallas …. cheers pal. Good thing I have a hard head!

SDB …. no worries …. like you, I am at the office, so sometimes disappear from CQN for periods (the cheek of some clients, eh?! interrupting my CQN’ing?!)

I have heard great things about T&C … small world …my ex is from South Africa (her family is in Cape Town) and dove there …. and my current better half is from Sydney, and learned to dive on the reef out there. We were there at Xmas, but didn’t make it that far north… didn’t need to really to see great whites …. there were three of them in the water out front of their house, including one they figured was 21feet long! So, didn’t do much swimming there! But both places are on my diving bucket list.

The concussion must be wearing off …. this morning, I was thinking of an away win tomorrow… now, I’d settle for a draw!

  20. Another observation about the troll wind up saddos I’ve oberserved over time, is that whenever there is cause for celebration on the blog, or an outpouring of compassion for a Tim in distress, they crawl back to their holes.

    Wonder why that is…?

  25. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Jimmynotpaul and Bada Bing, One of the reasons our game is in the mess its in because players like Frazer Wright, Jamie Hammil and Lasley kick players more than the ball and its accepted. The lack of technique is astonishing.

I’m still peed off from the last game of the 2012/13 season when Wright was one of the four St Johnstone players who never applauded our team onto the park.

However to more pressing matters, lots of hard work, concentration and focus needed for 90 + minutes tomorrow night.

I still think we need to score twice to increase our chances of getting through tomorrow night.

  26. Best wishes to TCR for a full and speedy recovery.
