Malmo worries over Celtic speed and height

487

The sight of Mikael Lustig checking in at Glasgow Airport this morning was welcome, but we should be pragmatic, six days is little time for a hamstring to remedy itself from what was clearly a concerning injury on Wednesday. Mikael should go through some stringent tests tomorrow morning but if there is any doubt of his fitness, he should not be risked.

Football is a 13 or 14 man game. Ronny will want to make two, possibly three, fatigue or tactical changes. Losing a player early to injury would severely hamper his options, allowing Ronny only one change, if he wants to keep a sub for late game, or extra time, contingencies.  For what it’s worth, I believe the knocks taken by Lustig and Griffiths in the first leg cost us fresh legs, and ultimately territory, leading up to Malmo’s second.

Celtic’s perpetrations went a lot better than Malmo’s over the weekend. A comfortable win with what for all intents and purposes is our second 11, while Malmo put a full-strength team out, restored those suspended for last week’s Celtic game, and lost to lowly Hacken.

Journalists close to Malmo assure me the Swedes hope to tempt Celtic into an attacking formation, just as they did to Salzburg in the last round. Salzburg arrived full of confidence but were picked apart on the break. Celtic’s own pace on the break is one worry for Malmo, who want Celtic to play high up the field.  The other is defending set-pieces. Hacken, who don’t have the height advantage of Celtic, scored from a corner kick on Saturday.

Winning free kicks 30 yards from goal would be useful. This is Kris Commons territory. Kris knows how to put his body between ball and man, and wait for the barge, although James Forrest displayed the same tactical-awareness in the first leg.  I’d have Kris holding a training session tonight: “This is what to do with your first touch, this is where you put your bum, then wait….”

Protect the defence, break quickly through Forrest, Johansen and Griffiths, and allow van Dijk, Boyata, Bitton, Griffiths and Lustig/Ambrose to give Malmo something to worry about at set-pieces, and we’ll win this game.

Can any of the posters who are slagging off Efe, please give instances where he has cost us points due to him being a bombscare ?

Apart from the Juve game, where he shouldn’t have started, I reckon Lenny was at fault there, but, hey ho.

*absolutely, he had come off a 10 hour flight complete with changeover and Lenny asked him if he was ok tae play????????

Calm Heids required tomorrow their manager has tried to rile our players by bumping his gums. Let’s keep the heid and 11 players on the park.

Who the hell is Calm Heids? Is that Y’on left from St Pauli we were linked with?

    PS I agree! ;-)

  3. I’ve no issues with Efe playing tomorrow.

But………………….please tell those playing to pass the ball to Celtic players!!

    And we’ll win!

    Tactics talk over.

    Good Afternoon.

Fair point (though VVD red was mainly poor refereeing IMO)

I don’t mind Efe, I actually raised the question last year when Denayer was injured whether to continue with Efe over the season, but there’s always a nagging doubt with him playing which you don’t get with Virgil and co

Those are the percentages of games Mikael Lustig has played in the last four seasons.

  7. I thought Lustig was carried off with a bad injury, severe enough to bring him to tears.

    Did that not happen?

  8. BSR

He’s played in, on average, less than 4 out of every 10 games.

    Is he worth the wages?

  9. Philbhoy

    Me?

No, – Jose Mourinho would plan without him.

Which is to a certain extent what we do, and why we needed Saidy Janko, and why the daily Efe Ambrose obsessives, are wrong even before a guy pulls on the Hoops.

♫ ♫ Have you heard about the big strong man? ♫ ♫ csc

  10. Patrick,

At the time I thought all the guys I mentioned were sent off due to poor refereeing :))

  11. I think rather than trying to blind side anyone we’ll just play our best team and although we have no proven partnerships in the Boyd/Collins mould we’ve some that do appear to work better than others.

Armstrong has a bit of discipline about him and him an Izzy on the left will likely happen. Really like him as a player but I worry about Armstrong’s stamina and think he’s likely fist sub on fitness.

Lustig and Forrest on the left, that could be real source of joy for us. James’s tracking back been a big boost this year.

Centre backs as Qarabag and most games, wee bit of a fingers crossed decision of big Boyata.

Broony and Nir in front, obviously. Leaves a 3rd midfileder ahead of them and a striker. Got to be Griffiths.

Based on recent form I’d have brought Commons back in ahead of Johansen but 90 minutes at Tannadice makes that unlikely and GMS not consistent enough for a start so it’ll be Stefan. It nearly picks itself

If Lustig out for me it would be the natural full back with oor Saidy and again fingers crossed.

Charlie not involved enough this season to displace anyone so Izzy it is. Set pieces our best weapon, hope the delivery improves than of late. That’s where the Charlie factor may see him replace Stuart later on.

2-2, Celtic progress. One down, 2-1 up, horrific last 3 minutes. Mon the hoops.

  12. CQN Corner Stats 2015/2016

    Games: 10

    Corners Conceded: 38

    Goals Conceded: 1

    Corners Awarded: 70

    Goals Scored: 4

  13. My advice to the team, if in a winning position with 10 minutes to go, is to just see it out. Ball to corner flags etc, no wild crosses into their box which lose us possession.

If at the end, you make it through, celebrate, but not as if you’ve just won the EC.

    NonchalantCSC

  14. BSR

    I agree.

Young Saidy reminds me of Danny McGrain.

I hope he get’s his chance soon.

  15. Big Efe – African Cup of Nations winner n’est pas? Has had some great games for Celtic. Has had some bad ones. There isn’t a single player in our squad who could say otherwise (Derk B perhaps could say he’s never had a great game for us!). We have good players but our strength must be in being greater than the sum of our parts.

I’d prefer Lustig at RB if he’s fit – I don’t think he possibly could be having done my hamstrings a few times I know they are a delicate thing in the weeks and months after damaging them. He’ll be needed in other European games this season and I’d leave him out. Mind games are good though – Malmo will have to guess, but if he plays they will put pressure on him to try out his fitness…….

Back to Efe – the way he’s being done down on here is pointing me toward having him as first goalscorer. Himself, VVD, Boyata and Bitton are all capable of getting on the end of a set piece.

Personally I’m getting a lot of kicks from watching Celtic this season. I had the misfortune to watch the ‘highlights’ of Watford and Swansea yesterday (I think that’s who it was!). Spare me. Every one of the players in those teams is getting more than our top earners I suspect. Same goes for every other team in the EPL. Bournemouth, Watford, Stoke, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Southampton…..

Oh, Southampton – I learned last night have sold players to the tune of well over £100 million in the last few seasons as well as raking in the TV dough. They can GTF with their £10 Million for Virgil.

  16. Hopefully Lustig makes it but if not it’s got to be Efe for me. We are going to need height in the team for set plays & long balls, I’m not sure Janko will be effective in the air against Berget or Rosenburg. Unlikely to happen but I’d like to start the game with an extra defensive midfielder. Charlie sitting behind Brown & Bitton will give us more protection & added height. Whatever the formation though I’d hope to see Forrest up against their right back at certain points in the game as he’s a real weak link.

No doubt it’s going to be a tight game, I’ll take 1-0 to the good guys. HH!

  17. Captain Beefheart on

Some admirable defences of Efe. The problem is that he has no confidence and that he is being asked to play right back. Doesn’t suit our setup.

Still it isn’t Real Madrid whom we face. Malmo’s attack didn’t inspire much fear.

  18. that was an interesting week lurking Celts :-)

a long time ago now but good to put faces to their defined Celticness, jinkyredstar and Greenpinata prior to our first leg against Malmo.Their goal at the end of the game being a dullyin but as time goes on and looking back at the match i am confident we will go through tomorrow night. It will not be easy(jeez its Celtic! making things easy:-)

i agree with you re Liam Henderson, he needs to build up match stamina and strength.hopefully his year long loan at Hibs will add this to his game.To much time spent on the bench and not enough game time is one of the conundrums the modern professional will have to look at.It is down to them.i hope Liam succeeds and puts the graft in.

a wee aside-it was Denis Healey who implemented the first monetarist policies when the IMF bailed out the Labour govt in 1975/6.so much so Thatcher could imply her monetarist cuts were not as swingin Mr Healeys.

    Hope you’re right.

He’s very up right and very mobile, and a prospect without doubt, and easy to see what Davie Moyes and Ronny Deila saw in him.

In the experimental line up required for Saturday he was a huge successs, but Efe had to play CB because of ‘resting’ as well.

I think if it comes to a straight choice with VVD and Boyata restored, RD will plump for Efe Ambrose at full back because of the vast experience, also mentioned by other posters.

If Mikael Lustig makes it, for the reasons you mentioned earlier, and his previous recovery rate, I’ll be surprised.

You’re likely to have the more reliable Ambrose, or Saidy at some point in the game anyway, even if Mikael starts, he’s been known not to finish ‘the odd game’.

  27. where were all these ‘wurld rekord crowds’ when the CVA was getting rejected?

Still my pre match european ritual will be a bit different tomorrow with The Great Wall visit ( yes having a day off to prepare for the game) hopefully being a good omen for a wall like defence performance delivering back to back away shut outs !

It will be a nervous hope in my heart not just for the team but for my internet refreshing CQN as it can be hit or miss over here on the wifi and what gets through.
