Maribor fatigue levels

1176

While Maribor were clearly second best at home to Celtic last week they remain a potent threat to our season.  You can be sure they’ve watched every minute of every game Celtic have played this season and will have dissected each defensive lapse.  Our acknowledged weaknesses – primarily a defence which has yet to find cohesion – will be well-known to each of them.

The vast acreage of Celtic Park should suit the mobile, pressing, game Ronny Deila has brought to our play.  It will be difficult for Maribor to cover all defensive zones, so with Celtic certain to play without a target-man, I expect the visitors to concede territory on the wings, defend their penalty area and force Celtic to play through them.

We will inevitably leave space at the back, in particular down the wings.  How attentive we deal with this risk could determine the outcome of the tie.

Maribor’s schedule since facing Celtic on Wednesday suggests their biggest challenge will be to maintain energy levels late in the game.  Thursday will have been a rest day, only light training would have taken place Friday and the bulk of the first team had a league game on Saturday evening.  Yesterday would be another rest day, and they will travel today before a light job on Celtic Park this evening.

By contrast, the bulk of those who will start for Celtic tomorrow will have had normal preparatory training Friday, Saturday, Sunday, with some light work tomorrow.  Those who made substitute appearances on Saturday will not have made a significant debit on energy levels.

We need to keep the ball moving early on, curtail rest times and have Maribor accessing their reserve tanks as early as possible.

  1. Good morning folks,

Looking forward to heading to Paradise this evening for a near full house on an important European night for the club. The atmosphere will be top class and well before the end of the evening I predict the old stadium will be rocking.

A few short weeks ago I witnessed the second leg thrashing at Murrayfield, wondering what was ahead for us, thinking a long, long season awaits.

At the time I thought some players were not trying and stated that I was undecided about our new manager. Also stated that he had to sort things out very quickly or he might not last long in the pressure cooker of football management at the top level.

Well just a few short weeks later Ronny has me convinced we are on the verge of a fantastic journey. The display against Dundee United was very uplifting, but the away display and result against Maribor proved to me that the manager is learning very, very quickly about what he has at his disposal at the moment and how to get the best out of them in the interim.

We are very much a team in transition. The manager has new ideas about fitness and training methods. His playing style that he desires will be much changed from the previous regime, but crucially this will take time to develop. I believe six months to a years time the team will be dramatically transformed, playing high tempo football, pressing the opposition when not in possession, and scoring many, many goals.

There will be ups and downs on the way. Last Saturday to me was an indication of the fine balance of trying to save players for the big game tonight from injury, whilst still trying to put a competitive team out on the Saturday.

I think we will win through tonight and go from strength to strength, but even if we do not win, I firmly believe if we give Ronny time he will prove to be an outstanding manager in the long term.

    HH Dan

  9. Big Wavy

` Ronny` sounds like a wee guy`s name but Ronny Deila is quite tall. Hence the dilemma. Wee Ronny sounds better than Big Ronny but it is not accurate. Hmmph….and people think us Glaswegians just attach the `big` and `wee` adjectives without any forward planning . It is an Art, I tells ye. An Art.

    ======================

I watched that excuse for a debate last night. I got fed up shouting at Salmond to shut up so I could listen to Darling’s responses.

He really jus a smug obnoxious git is Salmond, I imagine there were a lot of people in the same boat as me, tuning in to hear both sides but unable to.

He still dodges the big questions on currency and EU membership.

No more politics from me today.

    …………………………………………………

Were you watching the same debate as me? During cross examination, Alistair Darling asked Salmond 3 or 4 questions and then interrupted him each time he tried to answer. He fidn’t dodge the currency question at all. He told Darling precisely what he intended to do. Maybe if you had stopped shouting at the television you might have heard him too.

I am still undecided but I don’t deny what I’m watching in front of me. In terms of the debate which is not likely to dissuade anyone who has already made up their mind, I told my wife after watching it (by myself) that I thought Salmond had won and won well. I have to say that I was somewhat gobsmacked when the BBC News came on afterwards and made little clear distinction as to who had won and I thought that the clips they showed had been carefully edited to cast Alistair Darling in a better light than he had actually performed. As for BBC Scotland’s political editor Brian (Donaldson?), I thought he was a disgrace. I was beginning to think that I had been watching something else instead. Could he be worried about his future in the event of a YES vote? It’s not like BBC Scotland to be partial in their reporting, after all. Oh, then I remembered about their football department and it’s attitude to Celtic, it’s historical lavk of Tims, it’s reporting of the demise of RFC and, of course, Wee Chick.

  11. Im sticking with ronny ,he sees the dross that the last manager had to deal with, look give the guy a chance, and dont listen or read what the media say. they just dont like us.and celtic supporters agreeing with them .need to have a good look at themself, i said countless time on here that Celtic Football Club need to ban a few of them reporters, from entering celtic park, Hugh Keevins is not the enemy. there are others who are worse than him. so go on ronny and the players ,give us a win to-night

Huge night for the club – what a difference a few weeks makes. Ronny has a much better starting point that Neil Lennon had when he took over from Mowbray. Qualify tonight and what a strong position we will be in.

We will be dictating to them for the most part tonight, as we did last week for long spells. We had more of the ball last week and will be less likely to lose possession cheaply in midfield tonight with them defending deep.

We can blow them away, I’ll go 3-0.

  26. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy,

When you see for yourself what the YES campaign is up against. The whole of the Establishment lined up against it.Not one newspaper, not one TV station giving any kind of even handed reporting. Is this not a strange phenomenon. In any election, there are always two camps. Not this time.Denounce,mock,ridicule.

We all know that Scotland will have the £.We know it,they know it.Still to be discussed in the event of a YES vote. All parties have said it would be the best solution for all,so if after losing Scotland, can you honestly see Cameron harming the rest of the UK,through sheer bloody mindedness?.Yet still they lie, obfuscate, try and spread fear about the £.Its really their only weapon to try and scare the masses. When Salmond mocked him last night for trying to get the debate back to this agenda by saying”You are nothing but a one trick Pony”,Darlings face spoke volumes.

I fear that with the Establishment lined up against us,we will fail. For any Celtic fan to gloat about this, their heads should be hung in shame.Their very strange bedfellows are The Establishment,The Orange Order,The Tory government,UKIP,the majority of Sevco fans, and a Labor Party that has sunk to levels unheard of in its attempt to keep its fingernails dug into the top table.

That should be a wonderful victory parade.I can just see Ernie Lynch and friends carrying the banners.

    …………………………………….

Joe, I was referring specifically to last night’s debate and the contest between the two men. I did mention that I didn’t think the debate last night would influence anyone who had already decided which way to vote. I think it will be a NO vote on 18 September but I thought Salmond came across as more confident last night. He walked out from behind his podium on several occasions to engage with the audience whereas Darling looked nervous, almost clinging to his podium as a crutch. I don’t like the man at all but I thought he did well last night. I thought the outcome of the poll 71/29 per cent was in the right ball park although I recognise these polls can be unreliable. For the BBC to give very little indication just after the debate that Salmond had won resoundingly was quite insidious.

Anyway, there’s a big game on tonight, the butterflies are in full party mode and I’ll be there as usual. Hope the team exorcise what I had to watch at Murrayfield and give Maribor a doing. I think we will.

  28. Joe Filippis Haircut on

KevJungle. I think as supporters we support the team on the park now as far as the board are concerned we will have our views. My view is that I certainly do not have the knowledge that is needed to be on the board and that they are doing a good job.I do understand that you dont support the board so can I ask a genuine question do you honestly believe you have the background and the skills to improve upon the current Celtic board ? H.H.
