Maribor fatigue levels

1176

While Maribor were clearly second best at home to Celtic last week they remain a potent threat to our season.  You can be sure they’ve watched every minute of every game Celtic have played this season and will have dissected each defensive lapse.  Our acknowledged weaknesses – primarily a defence which has yet to find cohesion – will be well-known to each of them.

The vast acreage of Celtic Park should suit the mobile, pressing, game Ronny Deila has brought to our play.  It will be difficult for Maribor to cover all defensive zones, so with Celtic certain to play without a target-man, I expect the visitors to concede territory on the wings, defend their penalty area and force Celtic to play through them.

We will inevitably leave space at the back, in particular down the wings.  How attentive we deal with this risk could determine the outcome of the tie.

Maribor’s schedule since facing Celtic on Wednesday suggests their biggest challenge will be to maintain energy levels late in the game.  Thursday will have been a rest day, only light training would have taken place Friday and the bulk of the first team had a league game on Saturday evening.  Yesterday would be another rest day, and they will travel today before a light job on Celtic Park this evening.

By contrast, the bulk of those who will start for Celtic tomorrow will have had normal preparatory training Friday, Saturday, Sunday, with some light work tomorrow.  Those who made substitute appearances on Saturday will not have made a significant debit on energy levels.

We need to keep the ball moving early on, curtail rest times and have Maribor accessing their reserve tanks as early as possible.

You should know fine well what troubles borders bring……….Less borders, not more of them.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I would love to see Commons fit in to Rinny’s plans, but tomorrow night is not the night to conduct that experiment.

Leaving Izzy out was also not easy, but he has more to offer in the last third in my opinion, and would be a good wide left sub when we need him.

Oh and I would play Gordon in goal just in case they get past our back line :o)

So pleased to see your good news about your mum …..long road ahead but I’ll be looking for more updates.

    May God bless your Mum!

  6. Birthday Bawsman

I’ll only say that an outward facing wee country open to the big world could have far less of a ‘border mentality’ than a bigger one that withdraws due to post imperial insecurity!

  7. I’ve never heard or know anyone being barred from there, I know lots of guys who are on it and they’re nut cases, you don’t fit that profile, then again I don’t know you?

In voicing an opinion you are not not butting in.

As I have said before, I am appalled by the number of people in Scotland with names like Gallagher, Sweeney, O’Neill etc who would fully support the idea of an independent Ireland but baulk at the same for Scotland.

  9. Malorbhoy like a wee dug wae a black pudding see you tomorrow night , did,nt mean to give JFH a hard time, love the Green Brigade but they have,nt been banned. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  10. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I remember many years ago when Andy Gray signed for wolves they brought him on to the park to sign his contract just before a match and the crowd loved it great theatre. If we have indeed signed the two players Celtic should bring them on to sign there contracts before the game it would in my opinion do two things let the players fell the atmosphere of 60,000 fans and also lift the fans for the match even higher bring even more theatre to Paradise. H.H.

  11. Nonsense Bawsman, Agreed borders present no problems to anyone. There is hardly going to be armed conflict on a Scottish/English border. Even in Ireland the physical Border has disappeared, you just drive from one town to another and you wouldn’t know you are in a different jurisdiction.

  12. VOTE NO.

John Reid, David Cameron, Gideon Osborne, the BNP, Nigel Farage and although Jim Murphy would like to magic them away, The Orange Order.

The English folk I live and work amongst simply don’t recognise how you try to paint them. I have much more in common with outward looking Europeans than any narrow minded nationalist idea.

Is Orkney or Shetland next for self determination? I imagine they will not regard non Islanders as representative of their needs? That’s a serious point BTW.

    What will the currency be?

How will Scotland enter the EEC?

Two main questions from a VERY long lost I could post.

  15. The Celtic Sporting sent this afternoon to the formal proposal for the transfer of Stefan Scepovic. The offer, which had already been made in some contact during the negotiations that have taken place in recent weeks, provides for the payment of EUR 2.5 million and 5% of a future transfer of Serbian striker to another computer. In principle there is harmony between all parties with an agreement in principle, and expects the transaction to close in the next few hours.

Here in West Dunbartonshire we have an MP who in common with generations of her family will have floated from North to South regularly, but toeing the Westminster Party line, spouts the border nonsense.

Even at the height of the troubles, border checks were less than rigorous.

I Iove the English. Many of my best pals are English. I’m daft for them in cricket and quite happy to see them win on a football or rugby field.

Cried when jess ennis win her gold like she was one of our own.

Didn’t mean I wanted to be ruled from London by Maggie as a kid or have Gideon, Boris and Farage taking me on their anti euro, isolationist road trip for the next generation.

    Aff oot.

Thanks again for all the love on here. And nae mare politics from me in case JJ or Embramike give me a doing!!!

  18. I’ve gotta say I’m disappointed we dropped 3 points yesterday – a winning mentality is something to cherish and defend, yesterday, irrespective of how many changes were made to the team, Celtic lost and we took a step backwards.

Tomorrow’s game is going to suit Maribor’s usual tactical patern of defending deep and hitting teams on the break, Ronny Delia goes into the game with a potential winning hand, will he play it to our advantage?

I hope he sticks with a 4,5,1, formation and brings home Champions League football to Parkhead!!

  19. Does anyone know if it’s possible to park along Millerston street if I’m there early enough, that’s the one up the side of the Forge.

It would help with getting back towards the M8 if I could.

  20. Not read back. Just finished another working day. Popped into ticket office to get a ticket for tomorrow nights Euro extravaganza. Lower tier section 119 Where the away fans sit is the only lower area available. Upper stands restricted view only. Still a good few waiting to be served. Me? I am in 111….emday got a big drum and upside doon banner ah kin get a lenny!

A wee yes or no answer.

Do you honestly believe that even with diminishing North Sea oil reserves, the EEC would contemplate, even for a nano second, refusing an Independent Scotland entry.

On the matter of North Sea oil, I yet to hear advocates of Better Together tell us what happens to the UK economy when the oil that has bolstered it for over forty years runs out.
