Mariners confirm Rogic deal

963

Tomas Rogic’s club, Central Coast Mariners, formally announced they had agreed terms to transfer the player to Celtic a few hours ago.  The Australian attacking midfielder, who turned 20 last month, will require a work permit before the transfer is concluded, but should be a formality.

After having an extensive look at the player, Neil Lennon will think there is an excellent chance he will be a successful addition to the team, but it’s worth remembering that Victor Wanyama joined at the beginning of last season at the same age as Tomas and took six months before securing a regular starting place in the team.
[calameo code=000390171cc0c3617c8cc lang=en page=80 hidelinks=1 width=100% height=500] I have avoided all YouTube clips of the player (which are notoriously misleading) but by all accounts he is an excellent prospect, however, he will need our support and encouragement as he settles into life in Scotland – especially if he acclimatises to the Scottish game.

I had to spend the next 10 minutes listening to them discuss their vegan diets while I could have been chatting him up about the bould Tom Rogic!

We both commented on how much leaner and meaner Heskey now looks compared to his England days. He is a relaxed and happy boy too. Especially as his Mum and Dad were visiting briefly.

Celtic star Kris Commons says new Australian teammate Tom Rogic will create competition for places and make the Scottish Premier League (SPL) leaders even stronger.

Talented 20-year-old playmaker Rogic has agreed to terms with Celtic, putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal, his A-League club Central Coast confirmed on Friday.

The recently-capped Australian international will officially become a Bhoys player if he is granted a work permit.

Scottish international forward Commons likes what he’s seen from the former Mariners’ young gun so far.

“I heard rumours Fulham had bid for him and that he was supposed to have been going to Reading,” the Scotland star said.

“I have seen him train once and it seems like he has plenty of ability so he’ll probably fit in nicely.

“It’s competition, not just for me but also for Joe Ledley, and it’s always nice to have healthy competition because it makes you better.”

A Celtic statement read: “The club can confirm an application will be made to the appropriate authorities in the next couple of days.”

Rogic has scored five goals in 24 A-League appearances and impressed Celtic manager Neil Lennon in a trial spell during the Scottish champions’ recent Spanish training camp.

Rogic flew to Scotland on Wednesday with the rest of the Celtic squad after the Mariners accepted a bid believed to be around STG400,000 ($A610,000).

The player’s future has been the leading A-League transfer story, with English Premier League clubs Fulham, QPR and Reading having also taken an interest.

Central Coast chairman Peter Turnbull was thrilled for Rogic.

“We are delighted with the news that Tom Rogic has agreed personal terms with Celtic Football Club,” Turnbull said. “For us, it is a proud day to have played a pivotal role in his development.”

“But Tom Rogic’s transfer to a club of the magnitude of Celtic also underlines that we at the Mariners are developing talent exceptionally well.” Oh Jeezo Someone Else Disagrees with Craig (Did I tell You I Played with Terry Venables) Foster..

Meanwhile, Commons is raring to go as the SPL prepares to come out of cold storage following its winter break.

The league shut down for two weeks at the beginning of January allowing the Celtic players a much-needed break as they continue to battle multiple fronts.

Celtic top the league by nine points and have a Scottish League Cup semi-final against St Mirren before they face Italian giants Juventus in their Champions League last-16 match.

    Sean Fallon recalls the game

“I remember that game as if it was yesterday.

“It was the best performance in my time as a Celtic player. Maybe it was because a lot of us were getting old and we realised we didn’t have very long to make a real impact.

“We never expected to win by such a margin but as the game progressed the confidence grew sky-high.

“Everything clicked and it seemed we couldn’t do anything wrong. It was unbelievable.

“We were in the doldrums, yet we never went into an Old Firm game believing we were second-best.

“Charlie [Tully] used to get a hard time from Rangers skipper Bobby Shearer. When it was over Bobby said to me ‘you moved him because he was afraid of me’ but I said we moved him because we wanted to win the game. It was a winning switch because Bobby used to give Charlie little room to operate in.

“Bobby was a good defender and a hard man, and so was I, but I don’t suppose we would get away with our tackles nowadays although we both played within the laws of the game!”

On John Valentine, “It destroyed him but I thought it was a shame he took all the blame.”

  19. NORWICH have slapped in a £5million bid for Celtic star Gary Hooper.

SunSport revealed this month Canaries boss Chris Hughton was weighing up a move for the hitman.

He had been at Fir Park to see Hooper net his 18th goal of the season against Motherwell on January 2.

Now it’s understood the Carrow Road manager has made Hooper his top signing target, with an official offer believed to have been made to Celts yesterday.

Hughton wants to pair ex-Scunthorpe frontman Hoops with Swansea striker Danny Graham in a new two-pronged forward line.

That saw Norwich follow up their Hooper bid with the same £5m offer to the Welsh side for their Gateshead-born ace, who is also wanted by Sunderland.

Hooper was always going to be a man in demand as soon as the transfer window opened after his goal-laden career with Celts.

Now chief executive Peter Lawwell must weigh up whether to accept the first offer for the 24-year-old.

Hooper — who has netted an incredible 69 goals since his £2.4m switch in 2010 — is thought to be keen on a return south to help increase his chances of an England call-up.

But he would have to decide if now would be the right time for a move with the Hoops facing a Champions League last 16 clash against Juventus next month and still in the Treble hunt.

Hooper would be in line for a massive wage hike if he was to move to the Premier League now, with as much as £30,000 a week on offer from the Canaries.

But if his stunning form continues he could be in an even better bargaining position come the summer.

Celts manager Neil Lennon had said this week he was hoping for more talks with Hooper’s agent over extending his contract, which is up at the end of next season.

But Norwich’s bid could end any hopes of that happening.

Asked about the Hooper situation at their Marbella training base earlier this week, Lennon said: “We’re in negotiations with him.

“There has been a lot of speculation but I’ve not spoken to anyone.”
