Midfield must change, we have options available

356

There is a decent possibility that Celtic’s apparent malaise over the six games since the win at Fir Park has something to do with opposition teams closing space our midfielders used to so much effect against Newco at the start of February.

That game was such a platform for our midfield to demonstrate their ability to find and exploit space.  Sure, form slips, but opponents watch and learn.  Consequentially, Celtic must continue to change the script.

Through this period, Callum McGregor has continued to dominate his area as teams fall deeper, but the two more advanced midfielders, paired from Matt O’Riley, Tom Rogic and Reo Hatate, have been denied the acres available to them against Newco and Motherwell.

We cycled through Rogic-Hatate, O’Riley-Hatate and O’Riley-Rogic combinations during this period, to little effect.  The latter combo looked the least effective, but that was against Bodo/Glimt, by far the better opponents.

Meanwhile, Yosuke Ideguchi waits in the dugout.  We don’t know enough about Yosuke to make a proper judgement.  He made his debut as a late substitute against Hibs in January before being injured at Alloa on his next outing.  His only subsequent game time was again as a late sub against Raith.

When played, Yosuke has filled the deep-lying role.  Nir Bitton can play here too.  I cannot offer any great recommendation for either player, but I would like to see Callum McGregor higher up the field against St Mirren tomorrow, with Yosuke or Nir behind him.

For all the disappointments in Norway last week, Celtic improved when Callum came on to play in front of Bitton.  When he steps into the final third, he brings a presence no one else in the squad has.  I’m not going to tell you this should be a regular gig for him, but we need to change this area of the park for tomorrow and Sunday.  We have options, let’s use them.

Thompson still want to settle out of court …there is a reason for this……they have no guarantee of success … someone asked about the payments for previous abuse claims

I’m sure Saville’s victims got about 60k each..

Not sure why any documents should go missing not very professional….maybe police Scotlandl ost them ?!!…..but I’d imagine celtic will call cairney and torbet to the trial…..just been mentioned of national radio 2 ….batten down the hatches

I assume it’s covered by insurance and the insurers will be running the case, not Celtic. Not sure what the limit of cover will be.

    —-

The plaintiffs will be looking to prove that there was wilful negligence & cover-up at the time of the offences in order to maximise the damages claimed. Surely, if proved, that would negate any obligation on the part of the insurers, unless modern-day Celtic have some new cover-all insurance in place that accomodates retrospective claims – that sounds highly unlikely.

Insurance companies usually look to settle prior to any court action, if possible. That it appears they have not is also pertinent. Some of the offences have been proven in a criminal court and six/seven connected with the CBC convicted.

    This is very worrying now.

  3. the reports of a “rangers celtic ” exhibtion match for Sydney during next years world cup are bizzare.

who thinks that is a good idea ? who in the plc would want to do that ?

play a liverpool or city or united, play anyone but thems.

surely many of our players will be ‘on duty’ anyways

The insurers will be in control of how the case is handled, not Celtic.

And they will be aware that any precedent this case sets may have knock on effects for them in respect of subsequent claims involving other of their insured clients.

  5. 95% of yon fellas posts are about celtic the football part, remember that. his words.

and his first ever posts on here were not about the possible outcome of the courts.

imho, that and comments on how other people vote was always his strategic intent.

    Saint Stivs,

I saw that, I don’t like the idea of it at all.

It will be promoted as Old Firm down under.

We are playing right into the Old Firm mantra right enough with this abomination.

  7. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Just needs to play out in the background while we focus on the football.

At one end of the spectrum are a group of victims of sexual abuse who should always be put first (but, never are).

At the other end are the pitchfork and torch brigade …

    “Let’s bankrupt these Fenian F****rs ! ”

… who know Celtic are the easiest target in Scotland by a long way.

    Tough path to walk.

  8. Only on CQN could we go from Lennon to Lenin in just a few pages. Cap doffed to all concerned.

Historic cases of abuse should be treated sensitively and with due respect.

Hopefully, we don’t see any gutter press or political overreach or grandstanding here.

Scottish football can attract unpleasant interlopers sometimes

Yeah, came as a great shock to me. I just don’t understand it at all. But it’s probably just a misunderstanding. So nothing to see here. Just move along. And there’s a game tomorrow. Faithful through and through.

I don’t know who is feeding you this guff but they have to up their game. And if you have to use technical terms please try to use Scottish ones.

  12. Torbett, McCafferty, and Cairney operated under our roof. Without question. Their victims, who were children at the time, deserve justice. If that ultimately has a financial impact on Celtic, then so be it.

It’s about justice for victims of horrendous child abuse, the team we support and the possible financial impact should not be our primary concern.

  13. Whether you love, or, hate, the PLC model at Celtic – one thing is for sure, it is run on professional business lines. Does anyone really believe that in the Kelly/White era, when these events took place, that there would have been adequate insurance provisions in place to cover what is now about to happen?

  14. vinniethedog on

I’ve thought for a long time certain posters were here for this moment !!!!…very suspicious….maybe they should look at the recent Man City case…and Barry Bannon who was actually EMPLOYED by Man City !! before getting excited!!!

  15. vinniethedog on

Jimdom mcafferty victim has already been compensated….he was employed by celtic!!

  16. vinniethedog

Not sure Barry Bannon ever played for Man City

Villa, Derby, Wednesday etc but not City

  17. CELTIC MAC

Vinniethedog was referring to Barry Bennell. I think we all knew what he meant. Simple typo.

Ernie, i’m loath to argue about the finer points as I’m not well informed. As i understand it Rory Dunlop QC in court was representing Celtic, not the insurer although i do understand at this stage its a question of liability. Do you know for a fact that Celtic will and or are able to claim insurance for these claims?

  19. You are absolutely right Paul, there is a real flux about the midfield with no settled 3 or 4 and now we are into march. Ange seems to favour three at the front so his midfield choices are very important. Is Turnbull fit by now, we need some fresh legs. And as you suggest, let´s see Yosuke too.

  20. Trying to remember when Paul67 introduced a lot of us to the term Philadelphia lawyer

I think it might have been the days during the death of Rangers when we were treated to real experts giving their opinion on complicated and important matters.

  21. DAVID17 on 1ST MARCH 2022 1:45 PM

Court cases always run in the name of the insured party, not the name of the insurer.

No I don’t know ‘for a fact’ that there is insurance in place, but I think you’ll find there is.

    —–

What a horrible and unsubstantiated thing to say.

News/events whether good, or, bad, have to be faced.

I have been following this for a long time. I knew that when ‘class actions’ were going to be allowed in Scottish Law, that the tide had turned in Patrick Duffy’s & Thompson’s favour. This latest ruling has ratcheted things up another notch.

If I thought for a minute that the insurance companies would be ‘picking up the tab’, I would be delighted. However there is no precedence in Scotland – we are writing history as we go.

This will be UK wide, even international, news – it’s that serious. I hope our impeccable record in the last 30+ years stands us in good stead.

  23. It says that we are to play in a 4 team tournament in November. Do we know officially who the other 3 teams are and I dont mean rumours

  24. Legal matters that is.

I’m not sure why anyone would make such a worrying conclusion as JHB is unless they are an expert.

  25. unless i missed it, no mention of the opponents for the Oz tournament.

you would think they would annouce that at the same time ……….

  26. Is there a demand for Celtic to play ” Rangers” in Australia??

If there is no demand it won’t happen. Simples.

  27. park the bus 442 on

Watch for Alex Thompson from Ch4News to be standing outside the main door of Parkhead with a big loud shouty mic demanding that someone anyone from Celtic PLC have the courage to face down a live interview about the abuse issue ruling, after a previous and unsuccessful Ch4News attempt last year for an interview with big fearty Lawwell who bottled out of an interview with Alex Thompson, who had grunting and groaning James Dornan MP on a live link onscreen to form a two pronged attack on Lawwell, and trash Celtic’s reputation.

But Lawwell bottled out of an interview, making it look as though Celtic had something to hide.

Lawwell’s cowardice made Celtic look grubby.

No fan protests in the car park for Lawwell’s removal sent out the message that Celtic’s – so called – Irish Republican supporters were ((ok)) with that grubbyness.

Does anybody think that CH4NEWS and Thompson, and MP James Dornan, would’ve been so hungry for a live TV interview if Celtic had savvy Tim supporters who had the wisdom to install the fearless, George Galloway, as the leader of Celtic’s executive??

Because Celtic supporters have lazily financially supported an executive like the one we’ve had since 1994, corrupt beyond belief, its for ((that)) specific reason that Celtic fc today resides in a moral cesspit.
