Missing defenders when the squad is light

229

The 25th of May is our sixth cup final between now and then.  Sunday’s visit to Dundee could scarcely feel more important.  On-loan Liverpool left back Owen Beck has received much of the attention in the Dundee defence this season, but central defender Joe Shaughnessy has been a bigger part of their success story.

Beck has been injured since last month while Shaughnessy is set to miss his first start in a league game of the season against Celtic on Sunday.  He was hooked 10 minutes into Dundee’s last game, although the defence were still strong enough to stop Newco scoring.

Missing two from four first choice defenders is a challenge for a team with the resources of Celtic.  It will be a very unwelcome scenario for Dundee manager, Tony Docherty, as he makes a push for European football next season.  We have to expose their weaknesses.

If a keeper loses 9 goals it says more about the defending than the goalkeeping . Yet big Frank got hammered for it .

    ……………

FRANK HAFFEY was hung out to dry by the Hun Media in Scotland when England won 9 – 3 at Wembley.

They ” overlooked” the fact that Scotlands TWO Full Backs that day were ” Bobby Shearer and Eric Caldow. Two Hun players who were part of a defence that had lost SIX Goals the week before against Aberdeen, but nonetheless they were picked for Scotland against England a week later.

    TWO PROPER DUDS.

How can TWO ” Defenders” who lose SIX Goals one week with their Club, then be picked to play for their National team a weeks later ?

Making his Scotland DEBUT that day was a young Billy McNeill, who couldn’t rely on those Two Hun Full Backs either !

BOTH Frank and Billy were scapegoats for that heavy defeat.

I hope that my memory is holding up on the above ?

    LOL

Remember the joke doing the rounds re the 9-3 game at Wembley. The ball was orange, and Big Frank wouldn’t touch it and the two hun full backs wouldn’t kick it.Take care big man.

4-0 v Airdrie.. Leslie in goals. Remember a game v Glentoran at the Oval Celtic winning 5-4, during the heavy snow of ’63.Yogi scoring 4 and Johnny Divers the other. Almost sure it was played on a Thursday. Around the same time at Celtic Park Wolves winning 6-3 v Coventry City, managed by Jimmy Hill. Two games 18 goals.👍🇮🇪
