Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

Name and shame the cowardly cluggers from Murderwell( and elsewhere) and the cowardly cheats among the referees and media who protect them.

I wonder why we have so many injuries this year, and rankers so few? Mmmmmmm.

An examination of the comparative stats for example of fouls committed by the Lanarkshire Loyal against us and THEM since the wee ginger fud took over is extremely enlightening.

  6. PATRIK Twardzik’s first taste of the NextGen Series lasted all of 10 minutes before he picked up an ankle injury which forced him to come off against Marseille. It led to a frustrating few weeks on the sidelines for the player, which included having to watch his team-mates face Barcelona in the same tournament.

But now back to full fitness, and with a hat-trick already under his belt in the recent 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock, Twardzik is determined to make his mark on the prestigious European competition, starting tonight against Manchester City at Celtic Park (KO: 7.45pm).

The young Hoops will face the English side looking to produce another performance which saw them win 4-2 against City a few weeks ago.

And Twardzik, who helped his side to a 4-2 league win over Aberdeen last Friday, is looking forward to playing on the European stage in front of the Celtic fans, having played the last 20 minutes of the previous win over Manchester City.

“It was good to be involved in the Manchester City game,” he said, “but the important thing was we won because we needed the points. It lifted everyone in the dressing room and there was a really good atmosphere after it.

“There’s already a good team spirit here, but that boosted the confidence even more. We want to take that into the next game because we know we have to win that too if we want to get through to the finals in January.”

Going myself tonight, looking fwd to seeing the young hoops

    I agree.

Although, big FF has looked more like himself over the recent period but, I always get the feeling that a car-crash is just around the corner. I must also add that Big Dan is far more secure looking without CM who I think, when he(CM) makes a mistake then sends the jitters through the rest of the defence! IMO!

Morning all from a crisp yet bright Tottington.

Good result yesterday and well done DavieL for predicting the outcome. Big Sammi winning headers (Ibleedgreenandwhite) surely not :o)

Watched the game on tv and thought the referee was atrocious so agree regarding his failure to control the initial assaults on our playing staff led to an open season mentality that could only end up in serious injury for our players. The treatment of young James Forrest reminded me of the game against Kilmarnock when they targeted Bobby Petta. Disgrace.

What struck me even more was the commentators wondering why he (Richmond) never got an SPL game last year. Going on that performance he would be more at home in the UFC, which strangely enough I found myself shouting at him using those very same words on more than one occassion!

Paddy does what Paddy can and did it with style. Well done to the assistant referee as many of them would have raised the flag just because it was so tight!

A great 2 results from the last games so hopefully a lesson learned by those in the jersey and at the side of the pitch.

Commons still looks well short of match fitness but hopefully that will come.

  9. All you Glasgow based Bhoys. Try to get to Celtic Park tonight for the U/19`s game. It would be great if a decent crowd turned up and CQN would benefit from reports on likely First Team candidates.

  10. Really great result yesterday but we need to sort that defence out. We are losing simple goals.

Great to see the Hoops score from a set piece though. Thought Sami played well and gave us a threat in the air.

Kayal finally looks like he is match fit and big Victor is the type of player every team needs. He does all the sweeping up and is a good tackler.

The strikers are scoring and it’s good to see Commons back in the side. I didn’t expect to see him again in a Celtic shirt.

Forrest got kicked out of the game and the referee done nothing to protect him but the Celtic players should have been in the Murderwell players faces. If someone takes our Bhoy down the rest need to rally round. That’s one of the times we miss the Broony.

Paddy gave his usual cameo and created the winner with Stokes.

Not a perfect day but after results recently it’s just good to get 3 points. Inverness is massive and it’s no surprise they are hitting form just before they play us. It seems all teams have a purple patch before we play them. Get the 3 points any which way we can and get back down the road.

Hopefully the injured players keep returning to the team and we keep this run going. It doesn’t look like many sides will take points off the HUN so we will have to do it ourselves.

There were poppys on the shirt sleeves and a minute silence at St Mirren Park.

Hearts always request a silence as their team all signed up for the first world war. I think it was McCrae’s battalion.

Many other footballers did too of course and I think a Celtic player was awarded the Victoria Cross.

  18. Another beautiful, frosty morning here in North Ayrshire.

Hope Celtic have fired in a strongly-worded complaint, protesting Richmond’s abject performance yesterday.

  19. The company behind a fireworks display in Oban which lasted just 50 seconds has offered to provide another show free of charge later in the month.

A technical hitch meant that all £6,000 worth of fireworks at the bonfire night display went off within a minute instead of the scheduled 20 minutes.

Councillor Roddy McCuish, who helped to organised the show, said the public had been “absolutely brilliant”.

He said a free display in Oban would take place on 27 November.

Mr McCuish thanked the company, Pyro 1, for “holding their hands up” over the mistake.

He said: “They are going to come back and do a free display in Oban at no charge over Oban Day at the end of our winter festival.”

The display took place at the town’s Mossfield Stadium at 19:00 on Friday.

Mr McCuish said: “It was like daylight. It was absolutely fantastic.”

“The operative explained to me there had been a terrible malfunction.”

Locals report that 83 year old Jeanie McGhee of Main Street, Oban, had been in her kitchenette unaware of the intended display. Husband Archie came home from a day spent in the Anchor Pub and put his hand on Jeanie’s bottom just as the fireworks were set off. Paramedics were in attendance shortly afterwards and reported Mrs McGhee to be in a comfortable position but had not yet removed the smile from her face.

Why the BBC must dump its greedy pundits

Last updated at 11:40 AM on 5th November 2011

Never forget — it’s our money. How many times must Mark Thompson, the director general of the BBC, be told this before he understands that his Corporation is financed by licence-fee-payers? And if he doesn’t understand, then in these difficult times, let’s find a replacement who does.

It has just been revealed that Alan Hansen is paid an incredible £40,000 a show as a pundit on BBC’s Match Of The Day. Hansen is said to get £1.5 million a year and is contracted to appear on about half of the 70 shows screened during the football season.

I know a little about the price of punditry because I own a tiny online sports television channel. My bet is that many former footballers would appear for nothing for the chance of giving their views on such a high-profile programme.

Ex-players are desperate to get into the media and enjoy the chance of being famous again.

At the very most, BBC bosses should only have to pay a £1,000 fee per show, plus taxis.

The BBC argues that the calibre of pundits is an important part of Match Of The Day. Rubbish! Viewers are mostly interested in the goals and the games. If the producers believe otherwise, why don’t they turn the programme into a football chat show instead? If they did, the audience would plummet from three million to three.

The spin-offs from appearing on the BBC have been hugely lucrative for Hansen. He has been chosen as the face of the supermarket Morrisons and has a ghosted national newspaper column. Would he have picked up these nice little earners without having appeared on Match Of The Day? Of course not. So why are we paying him at all?

The BBC might argue that Hansen could always defect to Sky. So what? He could join ITV. So what? If he did, he would be paid by commercial broadcasters.

Working for the BBC, he’s being paid with my — and your — money. I don’t want to pay him £40k a show. I don’t want to pay him £40k a year. Do you?

It wasn’t so much that McCall spouted such awful dangerous nonsense that really got ma goat; it was that he was allowed to spout it without being challenged.

By the way, has anyone seen any criticism of the MIB in any of the Scottish media? Radio Scotland never mentioned him this morning.

  22. ‘Willie Angus played with Carluke Rovers FC, and in 1911 was signed by Celtic. He played with Celtic FC during seasons 1912-13 and 1913-14, but never managed to gain a game for the first team, his career cut short by World War One.

His legendary status is beyond the football field, becoming the first ever Scottish Territorial soldier to win the Victoria Cross.

Willie Angus was awarded the highest accolade that any soldier can obtain in the British army, a Victoria Cross, on June 12th, 1915 in Givenchy (France). He lost an eye, damaged a foot and was wounded 40 times in the process of successfully rescuing Lt James Martin, a fellow native of Willie’s home town of Carluke who was lying injured a couple of feet away from the German front lines.

His sheer heroism was described as: “The bravest deed done in the history of the British Army” by Lt Col Gemmill.

On returning to Scotland after he had been presented with his medal by the King, he was feted by the whole football community and received standing ovations at both Parkhead and Ibrox on the same day at both semi-finals of the Glasgow Cup.

Willie never able to play for Celtic again after this, but after his return from the war, he was often invited to major football matches as a celebrated and respected guest of honour. He became President of Carluke Rovers FC, and retained that position until his death in old age.

William Angus VC died just two days after the 44th anniversary of his brave deed. His last annual telegram of thanks from the Martin family was delivered to him in hospital.’

Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld may snub Celtic and seek a permanent move to Championship leaders Southampton.

On-loan Hooiveld, 28, is due back at Parkhead in February – but has rarely played for them following his £1.8million move from AIK Solna in January 2010.

Hooiveld said: ”It’s just getting better and better at Southampton.

”Nigel Adkins, the gaffer, is pleased with me, I think, and I’m very pleased to be here enjoying myself – so I remain open on staying.

James Stokes is commemorated in the Rose Garden in the Gorbals, at the junction of Old Rutherglen Road and Pine Place.

Certain off shoots of humanity don’t like the fact that his name is embraced by the Celtic Supporters in the brazen head. They particularly are outraged that both James’s parents were Irish.

The memorial in his honour has had to be guarded on various ‘marching’ occasions. (By the way there is also a headstone in the Rose garden marking the burial plot for one Robert Malcolm. I’m not sure if it is an old one or just reserved in case he visits the area? :-))
