Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

I think someone predicted that Grant Adam would be referred to as an Old Firm goalkeeper.

Well the Herald has picked up the Press Association report which does exactly that:-

A football player is due to appear in court charged in connection with a sectarian breach of the peace.

“Rangers goalkeeper Grant Adam, 20, the brother of the team’s former midfielder Charlie Adam, is alleged to have committed the offence in the early hours of this morning in the Merchant City area of Glasgow.

Grant Adam has been a member of the Old Firm club since leaving school and is now the third-choice keeper for the team.

He is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: “We can confirm a 20-year-old male has been charged in connection with an alleged sectarian breach of the peace, in relation to an incident in Ingram Street on Sunday November 6.”

Charlie Adam, 25, is now a Liverpool midfielder and has played for the Scotland international team”

  5. Morning all

Had a “LOL” moment at MWD’s post there. Checked out the “highlights” myself last night, and as I was at the game, it was clear the BBC chose to edit, so that their precious Motherwell FC wouldn’t be shown in a bad light. God forbid they do that, when two of their “expert panellists” come from the Motherwell first team. Lasley should have had a Reliance officer handcuffed to him last night during the filming, given the nature of his assaults yesterday.

Reliance officers handcuffed to Motherwell players, Police officers handcuffed to Rangers players and Sheriff officers handcuffed to Rangers directors. There must be a shortage of handcuffs.

  8. Morning all from gay Paree, pretty overcast but dry this morning (11C).

My blood pressure certainly went up to dangerous levels while watching the match yesterday (Ch67).

Murderwell and their like are a disgrace to football.

It’s no wonder we have so many players constanly out injured.

The ref was either incompetent or has an agenda – most likely both.

This is what we are up against, and always have been – NOTHING has changed despite all that happened last season.

Has anybody ever seen rANGERs being kicked up and down a fitba park?

    Naw, me neither.

Full credit to the Bhoys for battling away against the odds and running out with the 3 points.

  9. Defo bed time.

4 trophies for such a young team in one season would be, IMO, unprecedented.

It is a distinct possibility, especially if we can get out of this CL type group.

We are really standing on the cusp of something monumental.

Neil Lennon is a wonderful coach to the young players, James Forrest will testify to this.

ALL the Celtic players will have grown over the last few months, even though things have went wrong.

It is all about Learning from mistakes.

Izzie and Matthews really excites me big style.

  11. Morning all from a dark cloudy and gloomy North Ayrshire.

The mood was worsened listening to Radio Scotland. Did anyone hear McCall’s comments? I was disgusted and they went totally unchallenged. No wonder football is in the state it is in in Scotland. If our manager had made such comments (if we had played like them, I would be handing in my season ticket), he would have been pilloried from pillar to post. Of course, in Scotland you can kick Celtic all over the park and be praised for it.

Can anyone give me the contact details of Neil Doncaster and Stewart Reagan?

  12. Paddy G

They are just incredible, aren`t they? Old Firm indeed! Did the OF win the European Cup in `67?

Incidentally, any of you stats bhoys know if Celtic and Rangers were in European Finals in the same year?

  13. An important 3 points collected yesterday before the international break

Losing goals which are preventable is still a big concern particularly when as in the last two games we gift the opposition a goal of a start

No pressure on Hately who got time to place an accurate cross to an unmarked Higdon who scored all to easily, the faultlines in the organisation of our defensive set ups continues

As on Thursday a strong team ethic was on display, Stokes, Wanyama, Kayal, Dan and Rogne all fought and won most of their battles which laid the foundation for victory

Richmond had a shocker, referees like him take Scottish football back to the dark ages, when ball players such as Forrest and Commons are not allowed to play then the SPL is done, Levein already has by and large turned his back on the SPL for international players, referees like Richmond are a main part of the reason why

PL and our new Chairman i hope have a DVD of yesterdays refereeing debacle to put in front of Regan and the new referees chief, the Dallas legacy has to be eradicated ASAP

Kayal, and the impressive Wanyama should form the backbone for our midfield in future SPL away games, Ledley and a raring to go Scott Brown could bolster and strengthen a midfield for what we had yesterday

  14. Jungle Jim,

Basically that he was proud of everyone of his players, who gave their all; that he wasn’t biased and gave an honest assessment, which is that his team deserved a draw, at the very least.

  20. BBC news just covered Grant Adam story.

What was the footage accompanying the story????

    Celtics goals against motherwell.

    Anyone surprised?

  21. Nuclear Bovril

Agree with you about those three but Stokes in particular is the pleasant surprise for me. Mathhews and Wanyama had to sort of settle in so I had reserved judgement on them but I had already decided Stokes was a waste of space. He over-rated himself, blamed everyone but himself and did not work hard enough. The transformation has been superb and Mr Stokes deserves praise but our manager, too, must take some of the credit.

Totally concur. Stokes seems to have found the fire. Don’t want to get carried away as we’ve had a few too many false dawns this season but the improvement in the attitude of the players in the last couple of games is most encouraging.

  24. I have not yet seen any evidence of foul tactics by Motherwell. I listened to Radio Scotland where for example Sammi was accused of going down like a `fairy` and watched the BBC highlights. :-)

  25. Under Stein Dunfermline won the Scottish Cup in the 1960–61 season. They beat Celtic 2–0 in the final after a replay. In 1962 they reached the Cup-Winners Cup quarter finals, losing 5–3 on aggregate to Újpest Dózsa SC. On the way they beat St Patrick’s Athletic and FK Vardar. In the 1962–63 season Dunfermline beat Everton in the Fairs Cup and then played Valencia, losing 4–0 away before winning 6–2 at home. The Pars lost the subsequent play-off. Stein left in 1964 to join Hibernian.

New manager Willie Cunningham took the club to the Scottish Cup final in the 1964–65 season. They lost the final 3–2 to a Celtic team that was at the beginning of new manager Jock Stein’s era. The Pars finished 3rd in the league, one point behind top two Kilmarnock and Hearts. The following year Cunningham took Dunfermline to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup quarter-finals. Alex Ferguson was a player in the Dunfermline squad between 1964 and 1967.

George Farm was manager from 1967 until 1970. He matched Stein by winning the Scottish Cup in 1968 with a 3–1 win in the final against Hearts. Farm then surpassed Stein and took the club to their greatest achievement to date, the semi-final of the European Cup Winners Cup in season 1968–69, losing 2–1 on aggregate to eventual winners Slovan Bratislava (Slovan beat FC Barcelona in the final). On the way to the semi-final Dunfermline beat APOEL, Olympiacos and West Bromwich Albion.

George Farm greater than Jock Stein?

    Discuss.

It was Killie who reached the semis in 67 losing to Leeds 4-2 0n aggregate. Dundee united beat Barcelona 4-1 on aggregate the same year, losing out later to Juventus 3-1, 1-0 at home while La Vecchia Signora (the old lady) won 3-0 in Italy.
