Motherwell 1-2 Celtic

1066

Paddy McCourt was the difference between the teams today as Celtic came from behind for the second time in three days to beat Motherwell at Celtic Park, securing second spot in the league.  Craig Higdon opened the scoring for Motherwell after 11 minutes with a header from a corner kick but Anthony Stokes levelled, also from a corner, two minutes later.  Substitute Gary Hooper scored the winner late on.

Despite a sprightly first minute Celtic were on the back foot for most of the opening period and it was no surprise Motherwell opened the scoring.  Nor was the manner in which they lost the goal a surprise.  Tom Hately crossed from a short corner which Celtic slept at, failing to mark-up.  The defence also pushed out in instalments, leaving Craig Higdon free six yards from goal to head home.

Celtic immediately pushed forward and Georgios Samaras flicked a Kris Commons header onto Stokes at the back post, who volleyed into the net.

A Commons free kick was blocked by Samaras, whose shot was saved.  Thomas Rogne headed a Commons’ corner on target but the ball was blocked on the line.  On the half hour mark Higdon drew a good save from Fraser Forster.

Four minutes into the second half Stokes should have given Celtic the lead when he latched onto a long ball from Daniel Majstorovic which evaded the defence but Darren Randolph closed the space.  On 54 minutes the lively Stokes cut-back for Commons who took one touch too many and was robbed.  Fraser Forster was called into action again soon thereafter when he blocked a Nicky Law effort.

Paddy McCourt replaced Samaras with 15 minutes to go and transformed the game.  On 79 minutes he collected the ball inside his own half, drifted through a nervous looking Motherwell midfield until he reached the edge of the D before feeding Stokes on the left.  Stokes made space before rifling the ball into the six yard box for Gary Hooper to score the winner.

Tim Clancy was shown a straight red card late on for kicking Gary Hooper.  If referee Charlie Richmond had taken an earlier opportunity to control Lasley or Jennings, Gary Hooper, James Forrest and Beram Kayal would perhaps have finished the game with fewer injuries.

  1. Do we expect any of our first choice back for the ICT game? I like VW and BK in the middle, GS supporting a lone AS, but would like CM back at CB for a start.

Craigy Paterson on Sportscene wants the rules changed back to a few years ago which would have made Gary Hooper offside in the build up to his winner.

You got to love them bitter Huns. Now resorting to famous literature to fix the league; H.G Wells ‘The Time Machine’ now to be in vogue at referee HQ.

How old is Dunfermline’s Paul Gallacher?

Every time I see him – I think he’d be great for Celtic?

  6. 2 great wins in the space of 3 days. Welcome back Celtic.

We look to be playing like a team again, rather than individuals.

The joke that is Sportscene sums up a lot of what is wrong with Scottish football. Not a single mention of the hammer throwing of earlier, with the impartiality of the sports offering at BBC Scotland laid bare. Studio panelists to disect the blink and you’ll miss it highlights consist of a current Motherwell player alongside a former Motherwell captain. To the ignorant viewer Motherwell take the plaudits from today.

Paul Gallacher born in Deaconsbank, Glasgow (16 August 1979) is a Scottish professional football goalkeeper currently playing for Scottish Premier League side Dunfermline Athletic.

  8. I would like to revert to the old interpretation of “offside”.

    I am old fashioned, perhaps.

But, in my own old fashioned kind of way I would like the reversion to be at the start of a season and apply fairly to all teams. In Scotland, however, the fair application of rules is not old fashioned but quite novel.

  9. Thursday was a wee bit special to me. It was special to those who danced sang and dreamed. I tried to put it into words’ No one was interested in sticking it on their website so I put it on my own blog. Maybe you will think it worth a glance.

  10. Today and Thursday big Dan turned into a leader.

Noticed the cowards avoided contact with him and stuck to giving it to the little guys like COmmons and Forrest.

Never been so disillusioned watching Celtic as I felt today as the cheating unfolded.

We either have to resign or force change in Scotland.

With the coming storm for the huns- and their Edinburgh cousins they may have to accept our demands or face armgedon.

Would still rather wee left the best wee bigoted country behind as it’s natural for most of population to hate us and that ingrained prejudice will always be used against us.

    I agree

The art of playing someone offside was a skill as difficult to do and as good a part of team work as there is in the modern game.

The art of stopping goals is as good as scoring.

The makers of the rules disagree with that and seem to believe the entire game must be built to favour the attacker.

Where will the defenders grow from in 20 years – who will want to be one? the tackle is even being outlawed

Do you rate your namesake..as a Celtic Goalie?

I watched him against Aberdeen in the Friday night game that Dons won 4-1…Gallagher made 10 outstanding saves..just watched him tonight same again against Hibs.. I like the look of him – he’d do for 2-3 years at that age?

The reason the Scottish national team are so pish and have not been competitive for 25 plus years was evident today. The true national side are a parasite on Scottish football. While Celtic parasites dwell on the OF, the SPL and SFA sink to lower and lower depths of cheating in this national protection racket. The SFA are now reduced to a hun pension plan. The hun cheating over the same time period has been so extreme they (both the huns and the mini huns) even dodged paying taxes. The problem is that institution is not Scottish or Irish.

I also think the Scottish national team would do well with the demise of the huns.

Like today young Scottish footballers may see that skill can win games instead of sanctioned thuggery.

I expect the Neil Lennon hate campaign to get into gear soon after the new year. Like last year.

Can we please ban the BBC from CP for good. That mince on Sportscene was enough for me; change the off-side rule cause Timmy scored; it was only a wee kick when the Rangers player kicked oot.

    I mean, give me a break………………………..
