Motherwell need to get emotions under control rapidly

327

Meeting a self-proclaimed aggrieved opponent is seldom an appetising prospect, but I would rather have Motherwell away tomorrow than any other opponent.

Our opponents have stoked a sense of injustice brought about when their defender impeded Scott Sinclair, and finished the final as a contest.

What Motherwell manager Steve Robinson should not be doing is polluting his thoughts with what has been and gone. He could find himself two goals down within 15 minutes if his players take to the field with anything more than a desire to stop the champions running amok.

Motherwell can go fourth in the table if they win their game in hand, but the experience of Dundee United in 2015 should caution them. United were flying high before facing Celtic four times in succession. A Scottish Cup draw was followed by defeat in the League Cup final, the Cup replay and the league. That period broke United, who were physically and emotionally wrecked by the experience. They slid down the table and into relegation the next season.

After tomorrow, Motherwell have four consecutive away games, all in the league. If they don’t get their emotions under control rapidly, Celtic will punish them and things could get out of control before Christmas.

  1. ERNIE LYNCH @ 2:05 PM,

Think you are trying to have your cake and eat it. Lenny and Chris were very good defenders, I’m sure the odd nudge, tug and pull were all part of their art.

It doesn’t make it legal though does it?

Here is the offence under which Cedric Kipre was sent off. It’s Under Law 12

    Sending Off Offences

    • denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick

Now if you watch “Highlights Motherwell 0 2 Celtic – Youtube” After 4:30 minutes you will see the penalty incident in question.

Moussa Dembele has the ball on the left wing, Sinclair point to where he wants the ball and makes the run. Dembele makes the pass. The slick move allows Sinclair to make 10 yards on Kipre who is now the wrong side of the Celtic attacker.

Scott Sinclair has a goal scoring opportunity*. Kipre gives Sinclair a subtle tug on his left arm, enough to deny him the obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Sinclair goes down and the Referee imposes the rules. **End off…

*He’s enough of them in the past.

    **Wishful thinking g:)

    Hail Hail

  2. It appears to be the accepted opinion on here that the merest contact allows a player to throw himself to the ground in order to will a free kick.

Thinks seem to have changed a bit since Seville.

  3. So if it shouldn’t have been a penalty then things do even themselves up. That’s what we are told.

Celtic had a shocking penalty given against them in Semi against Neil Lennon’s Hibs.

Motherwell played like absolute thugs against Sevco in their Semi and got what they deserved in the Final…where they played like thugs again…

    Poor Motherwell.

  4. 50 shades of green on

When’s the elections when you need them.

    Barking.

    My last word on this..

if you throw yourself to the ground when no contact was made then this is classed as simulation.

If you throw yourself to the ground after you have been fouled, then this is called a foul.

If you can not see the differnce then I can only assume you do not undrestand the laws of the game or you are trolling .. enjoy the rest of your day.

  6. CHAIRBHOY on 28TH NOVEMBER 2017 2:47 PM

‘by an offence punishable by a free kick ‘

    ##

That requires sufficient contact to impede the progress of the player. In my opinion there wasn’t sufficient contact.

SS was cute, clever, whatever you want to call it. He felt contact and made the most of it. He also made a conscious decision to go to ground, just to advertise to the referee the fact that there had been contact, however fleeting.

In the end it didn’t affect the result. It may though have affected SS’s reputation.

Maybe the rule about diving (simulation) has to be tightened up, to make it clear that any deliberate going to ground, other than to avoid injury, is outlawed.

  7. So Motherwell’s Robinson saying no appeal for red card, giving a number of pathetic excuses, but ultimately the bottom line is…. it was a penalty, and a red card, and if you say it definitely wasnt you should automatically appeal,,,, otherwise, what’s the point of all that moaning and stirring it up ? Back it up ! Or do you really know the truth of the matter… better to hide behind excuses.. and probably breathing a sigh of relief the compliance officer didn’t pick up on the leg-breaker tackle earlier in the game

    Things changed since Seville?

Aye,plenty. The rules on contact in the box,for example.

  9. Oh and btw I don’t remember calling one of his own players a diver when he…erm….dived for a penalty against Motherwell earlier in the season.

Anyway, I’ve not had enough lemsip for all of this…

  10. Word of the day:

    Simulation

    advantage’

Chris Davies doing the press conf, SKY guy i think asks why if he was injured was he kept on the park so long, so we are down to one recognised striker for the next couple of weeks by the look of it, financials mean nothing when your players are booted of the park and become unavailable due to injuries.

Au contraire auld bean. I didn’t say I hadn’t referenced the link you provided; I said I didn’t have to. You see the difference? However, enough of the pedantry. To get behind your sophistry I did indeed double check the link – and confirmed that it is the same version of FIFA’s Laws of The Game that I have on my Mac in PDF format. I checked both copies and it evidenced that my initial supposition is correct and that the infringement was for holding and not for impeding as you errantly attest.

Part of my previous misdemeanours saw me become a qualified SFA referee (now lapsed, but it disnae make me a bad person) so I feel that I have a certain gravitas in assessing the incident and, unusually I concur with Brother Thomson (aye, it is rife within the SFA cabal).

I said a few weeks ago that I would scroll by and ignore you; this disquisition has in fact just reminded me why!

attempts to deceive the referee by feigning injury or pretending to have

  16. Whats worse?

1, Falling over in the box when pulled off balance? Or

2, Going deliberately over the ball, studs up, in to an opponents leg potentially breaking his leg?

    I know what I think.

  17. VFR800 IS NOW A MONSTER 821 3:08pm – This reminds me of the classic Guardian comic “You are the ref” which sadly stopped back in 2016. I look forward to further analysis of such incidents in forthcoming games, HH

  18. ERNIE LYNCH @ 2:57 PM,

The Law has been “tightened up”, if you like to call it that.

A few Seasons ago Sony Aluko went down under minimum contact for Rangers.

The SFA reviewed it and called it simulation.

Rangers were not happy, Ally McCoist called out the head of the Review panel.

    Since then things have changed.

Point is, if a defender makes illegal contact with a player and the player goes down it is no longer regarded as simulation.

Kipre’s contact was clever, he was on the wrong side of the attacker and did just enough to delay the prime shooting opportunity.

Now possibly Sinclair could have regained his balance, got the shot off later or went to the touchline and pulled the ball back.

The fact is that Kipre’s foul, no matter how subtle denied the attacker his prime goalscoring opportunity.

Now you and I will remember the days when the benefit of the doubt in decisions were given to defenders, that is no longer the case.

Attackers are (supposedly though ask Moussa) protected more in the modern game.

Fast clever footballers like Moussa and Scotty should be allowed to express themselves, even in Scotland.

There’s two separate offences involving impeding an opponent:

    1. involves impeding the progress of an opponent without any contact being made. That’s the one you’re referring to. The sanction is an indirect free kick.

    2. involves impeding an opponent with contact. The sanction is a direct free kick.

Ernie, at the risk of feeding the tool, can you point me in the direction of the part of FIFA’s Laws of The Game that validates your second point above?

I hope BR highlights the horrific tackle by Kipre on Moussa that has put our player out and the perpetrator able to play, the Compliance Officer is a total waste of time money and has no credibility by leaving this tackle unpunished.

    ——————————————————

Excellent point. I hope he does highlight it because, let’s face it, the media and some sections of the Celtic support seem determined to deflect from it.

Some of the great mysteries of the universe are for example what caused the big bang, how can all the matter of the universe be squashed into a millionths of a centimetre at the beginning of time. What is dark energy, what is dark matter? I am sure all these mysteries will be solved in my lifetime.

However one mystery that I feel will never be solved is why anybody decides to engage the troll that is “Ernie Lynch “

  27. Robinson stokes the Siege Mentality at Motherwell.

He started it after the game on Sunday by implying to all that it wasn’t a penalty & that Kipre was in tears.

He continues with his implieded criticism of the SFA’s Appeal panel by telling all that it would be “a waste of time & money”.

We are entitled to infer from Robinson’s words some or all of the following

    a) he has a seeing disability

    b) he doesn’t know the FIFA Rules of the Game

    c) he doesn’t understand these rules

    d) he believes the Appeals panel will follow these rules when they consider appeals

    e) he knows what Kipre did but after his postmatch comments can’t walk back to dignity

Just beat win your next two games Celtic.

  28. If Moussa misses next two games hopefully we will get a chance to see the lesser spotted Odsonne Edouard for a 20-30 minute run out in one of the Motherwell games.

If he’s been brought in as a potential Moussa replacement for next season we need to see more of him. Made an encouraging debut at Hamilton, had a poor 45 mins in a cobbled together starting 11 at home to Hibs, other than that hardly played.
