Mubarak brings echoes of another adamant player

1779

Occasionally an innocuous comment left here can stay with you for years.  The day following the 2005 defeat in Bratislava someone wrote, “I suspect we’ll find an injury in Nakamura’s fitness test”.  The player was scheduled to sign imminently, but with Champions League income looking unlikely, doubts emerged that Celtic would pay the money.

Soon others expressed doubts that Shunsuke would want to come, but within 48 hours of that defeat, he was sitting in front of the media at Celtic Park.  I was there, among a gaggle of Japanese and Scottish journos, when one of the locals asked why the prospect of being without European football didn’t put him off.

Shunsuke handled the question perfectly, “I am not here for six games of football, I have signed for Celtic and hope to play here for many years.”  Rumour has it that not everyone in the dressing room back then was equally as enthusiastic about life in Glasgow.

I’ve heard lots about Wakaso Mubarak in recent weeks, he appears to be a genuine talent, as well as being spirited.  What is most appealing about him is that he wants to be here.  This deal would not have happened if the player was not absolutely committed to coming to the club, and making his stay a success.

Back in August 2005 we didn’t know what we were getting with Naka, and I’m not going to burden Wakaso with a comparison to a player who turned out to be a transformational legend, but we need players with big personalities who can walk into the dressing room with the determination to be there, just as Naka did.

Welcome to Celtic, Wakaso.  Be yourself and you’ll love Glasgow; Glasgow will love you too.

    Things I do for you!!!

CELTIC are today battling to save their deal to sign Stefan Scepovic as PSV Eindhoven stepped up their bid to land the Serbian striker.

The Hoops had moved into pole position for the Sporting Gijon hitman at the start of the week when they agreed a fee with the Spanish Second Division side.

Peter Lawwell and his negotiating team have been working for the past four days to personal terms with the 24-year-old attacker.

Manager Ronny Deila admitted the tall, powerful player ticked all the boxes for the man he wants to lead his line and provide the goal threat which was so sadly lacking in the Champions League play-off against NK Maribor.

The £3million package Celtic were prepared to pay would be the first money Deila has spent on a new signing since he took over from Neil Lennon two months ago.

I wan’t flying a kite of any kind. I am merely interested whether or not Celtic fans would accept an invitation to the English Championship?

I am interested in any views on this as I have my own opinions on the pro’s and cons.

Apart from that, for anyone who is interested, I have looked at the Independence debate from far and near and having started out with no firm conclusions I cannot now see any argument that would persuade me to do anything other than than vote yes.

Everything I have read and researched persuades me that Yes is the right answer.

I also think an even more interesting debate starts on the 19th of September whether you vote yes or no and that is a debate we should all engage in fully and with the same gusto as the people of Iceland who radically altered their constitution telling the bankers and politicians to go Feck themselves!

Westminster Government is Government for Westminster, by Westminster and which at all times puts Westminster and London first and many people in all parts of the UK are starting to realise that it is a busted flush,

A yes vote will not just be good for Scotland but for the whole of the UK.

At least we won’t get Barcelona and Benfica this year, though I do hope Maribor don’t get Real and Man City

If Wakaso turns out to be a helluva winger, tears past defenders and puts lovely crosses into the box he’s going to find one wee Celtic forward (if he’s lucky) who is too wee or too slow of foot and thought to get on the end of it.

    Where’s oor striker?

  8. Anyone that would vote Yorkie is clearly a misogynist, and anyone that would vote Double Decker is purely driven by greed.

Your optimism and passion is obvious and although I disagree it is admirable nevertheless.

I’m off to the pub now, but would like to thank you and many, many others today for a great, mainly constructive debate.

Funnily enough I had him in the list but I took him out just before I hit the ‘post’ button. His last 2 performances have caused me to have doubts about his ability to play at speed.

  12. James Forrest @ 16.25 It still will not allow me to compromise my principles and vote for a set-up which includes a cut in corporation tax as a foundation. As I said in a previous post; the idea of dominion as a stepping stone to a republic was the rationale of the Free Staters and we can see how that worked out. Can’t Imagine Connolly’s proclamation including…but we want to keep the queen and the pound. HH

I have every faith that, if a Yes vote prevails, our wee nation will be able to sustain the services you mention, along with a robust and sustainable pension investment plan.

When BP announce the larger Clair find in mid-October we will see the start of another “Oil Boom” although I’m sure sustainable/renewable energy options will be pursued in tandem. Opportunities on the west coast post-Trident look good.

Our first opportunity to have a proper say (in my lifetime) will be this time next year when we are allowed to vote on which of the existing or newly-formed parties we want, based on their manifestos. Scottish manifestos.

No UKIP, no BNP, no Burlington club, no “new labour”, and no AS if we don’t want him.

Beautifully put, and two things jumped out from it.

    1) Iceland. Anyone not aware of what’s going on over there needs to read up on it. Much more complicated than I want to go into on here, but awe-inspiring and uplifting.

    2) Independence WILL be good for the rest of the UK, not something everyone realises or accepts. We can show how genuine social democracy works here, we can demonstrate that it’s not just a flight of fancy, but something practical and real.

We can form any number of political and economic links with the north of England, and help them break free from the gravitational pull of London.

We can re-engage with Europe and give them a glimpse of what it looks like when part of this island embraces the collective ideals of the EU rather than turns from them.

We can show them how to build a new model for the welfare state and the social security safety net, and end all this “strivers and skivers” nonsense and transform their own national debate ….

… and we can help them come to terms with their own national identity …

… and totally shift the ground on stuff like international intervention, the retention of Trident, the relationship with the US …

Transformative stuff, from this side of the border.

Was being consoled by a friend yesterday who said, ‘cheer up, you could be in my shoes trying to continue supporting Leeds Utd.’ I have thought about that comment a lot since and I must say that I would rather follow Celtic plying their trade in the Championship (even if it meant forgoing European football for X number of years) than seeing their only ‘hope’ as recreating the sectarian fest of the O^* F^^^.

Oh come on mate, every Westminster government this side of Thatcherism has voted for cuts to corporation tax. Every one of them.

And tell me something … why is that incompatible with socialism? Low levels of corporation tax means companies can invest in jobs and training and R&D.

The lower our corporation tax levels, the more likely businesses are to locate here and that gives people work, and it brings revenue which we spend on hospitals and schools and all the things a progressive country should make available to its citizens … for free.

I have never understood how we benefit people by hammering business. It makes no sense whatsoever. It is not socialism. It is lunacy.

  26. In my opinion if you support the cause of a united Ireland you have to give the Scottish people the same opportunity. My only fear is what Kitalba was talking about regarding schools etc..When I left school (many moons ago) getting a job because of what school I went to was very hard, and im worried it might go back that way. Just wondered where you were coming from.

The issue of us moving often rears its head at low points.

If theres nothing in it I don’t see any point wasting time on it.

If it was a goer I think(may be wrong) a majority would be in favour.

But for different (influential) posters to raise the subject between them occasionally is raising false hope to those who do want to go and is potentially very counter-productive. Essentially if its not a goer lets just concentrate on improving the league we ARE in.
