Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

  1. Watching the game again , what’s going on with the three guys hiding faces in the crowd at 25:59mins into the game, my guess they are Huns who have seen the light.

You’re grandchildren will be celtic fans.

  2. very sad to hear about the passing of Celtic groundsman Andy McCann. Andy was a great Celt, and someone who used to make us all laugh. He is up there with great Celtic servants like Neillie Mochan, and John Hays, the Chief groundsman, and wee Mary who used to do the laundry and the tea. God Bless and take care of all those we have recently lossed.

    Hail Hail.

He is to be congratulated for getting this out into the open,to a wider audience.

Many of us have tried, only to be hit with-‘Well,you would say that, wouldn’t you.’

He cannot be accused of having an axe to grind. Not prior to all this,at least. He is calling it for what it is.

It’s against the law, plain and simple.

Agreed we are a bit better front to middle, but our midfield sits to far forward.

In our last two European home games, the games as a meaningful contest have been over after 20 minutes.

Whilst I enjoyed the roller coaster last night, I see no signs of the manager learning to consolidate / frustrate opposition / defend etc.

As I said, I take no joy in saying this, but , I genuinely don’t believe we will qualify for CL group under RD.”

    ————————————————————-

Absolute Nonsense. We are miles better going forward since the start of the season plus as we lost 2 early goals and then Craig G made a rare error we had nothing to consolidate. I am glad you where disappointed our midfield did not sit back, they pushed on and fought back into the game. Earlier in season we where losing goals to diddies via giving possession away, and creating nowt, now we tore inter apart time and time again and only gave away goals due to cheap defending not due to cheap concession of possession. Losing 3 goals vs inter is quite different from the poorness of losing 7 in 2 games to red bull and zagreb.

Ronnie has us playing great football. And qualification for champions league is irrelevant, I’d rather we where in a competition we can actually maybe win. You sound like Hugh Keevins. First the goal post was “Ronny will not win the league” then it was “these hearts/Aberdeen games will be a real test” next it was “Sevco will see how far we have come”, next it was “we must win the treble or else Ronny is a dud”(in spite of Neils failure to do so not getting him labelled that) and now it is ” I don’t think Ronny is good enough to win the champions league, he should be sacked and the dream team of Jackie Mac and Ian McCall brought in to replace him”.

Have you even stopped to think how silly you sound? We know you are Hugh Keevins Clash City Boy. Paid to cause descent in the support. We are on to you.

I trusted in Ronny First. He has proved me right. He has us playing great football again, unlike the turgid un-inventive games Neil did last year in the champions league. Neil was a great servant but the time was right for new and fresh ideas to reinvent our side again.

It’d be nice if even one Raith fan complained tonight. Would carry more weight than a few dozen disgruntled tims.

  8. Coming out of Celtic Park last night was quite emotional for me.Listening to all the bhoys and ghirls talking about the game with big beaming smiles on their faces really brought it home to me just how blessed and lucky I am to be part of this great extended family.
