Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

  1. “can manager legislate for individual error, and I firmly believe that yes a manager can.”

    Clashcity,

How does a manager do this?

  2. Ruggyman,

The fact I have a contraire opinion to you doesn’t mean I am wrong.

It doesn’t mean you are wrong either

It means I have a different opinion

Was gonna say, it was dark….. I’d had a few.

    But a tenner’s a tenner!

  4. Celticrollercoaster supporting Shay, our bhoy wonder along the way on

Really impressed with the Bhoys fight back last night and the fact we did not give up.

Atmosphere excellent! The GB display amazing! Older 2 kids at the game, loved it and of course 2-3 down and entering injury time their ever optimistic old man telling them that we will get another chance, we just need to take it….and bang, goal as Guidetti then decides to start scoring again…and that amazing Henderson flick :-)

Loved being there with my family, both close and extended.

Archangel Armstrong looking the steal of the season for me, not meaning to undermine the rest of the team, by any means. Biton was superb as well, although thought we missed McGregor :-) ( that one’s for Cowiebhoy).

My turn for the TV now, so the game is going back on :-)

Ur out on ur own, on this one.

Ur case is full of contradictions.

Let’s take a democratic vote on this one…

Hendrix, Geordie, and Ruggygman all think you are way off with your point of view…. That’s 3 to 1….

That does for now…… U are wrong !

  7. clashcitybhoy

Unless the manager has the ability of foresight then he is unable to legislate for individual errors. Especially when it comes from the most consistent performer in the team.

  8. Geordie Munro,

At the point of an error, there is little a manager can do.

However, before and after there is a lot.

I remember the CEO of an organisation I worked for suggesting that when someone made a mistake, you trained / coached them.

If they made the same mistake again, you trained them again.

If they made the same error a third time you escalated things

    Fourth time you sacked them.

  9. Scott Brown is a force of nature.Up there with the best Celtic captains.Total dedication to the Hoops.

  10. Clashcity,

That model doesn’t work in football exactly.

But if a player consistently made errors I’d belive they’d be dropped.

Who is constantly making costly errors that is not being dropped in your opinion?

  11. “A manager can legislate for individual errors… He picks the team.”

    It doesn’t stack up mate…

As others have pointed out, the only other logic is to consider alternatives…. Zaluska.

Efe, instead of Matthews… McGregor instead of Bitton or Brown.

Thankfully my trust is in Ronny.

Thankfully Clashcitybhoy doesn’t manage Celtic Football Club

  12. BT/jamesgang,

A tenner??? Tight got that BT is! For that description he should be paying ye a grand!

    ;-)

    HAIL! HAIL!

    Token

  13. Geordie Munro

Your right that model doesn’t work in football – football managers need to be much more ruthless.

Last night, I thought CG was to blame for first and third, and didn’t look to clever at 2nd.

My gripe isn’t with CG, in his short time at CP, he has built up enought credit to be forgiven for last night.

My concern is with 4 minutes to HT, why didn’t he let the ball go out of play, and get to HT at 2:2

The error was Craig’s, but , I believe manager should have been getting a message to players saying “hold it till HT, regroup, and try to win second half 1 nil’

  14. O.k, Clashcitybhoy….. I’ll take ur logic and turn it back on you…. I’ll use your business / office environment scenario.

See the Celtic Manager doesn’t have to be overly astute to compare that over 20 games, Zaluska may make an individual error on 3 or 4 occasions… Where as the alternative C.Gordon, over 20 games is likely to make an individual error 1 time.

So, now as a manager you have weighed up that C.Gordon is the better performer in the work place….. C.Gordon gets the nod, gets the place in the team…. Then guess what, C.Gordon makes his 1 out of 20 error..

So tell me, given that Ronny knows C.Gordon is a safer bet than Zaluska, …. Back to the original point… How can Ronny legislate for C.Gordon making an individual error last night.

    He can’t !

    You are wrong !

  15. 2-0 ( Ronnys fav score) against Hamilton….then on to Milan…with a real chance….COYBIG fever already….

  16. Clashcitybhoy – I’d wager that RD has never seen Craig Gordon make the type of error he made on their 3rd before last night.

How then could he legislate for it or coach it out of him?

Furthermore each game of football is unique so your analogy doesn’t fully apply.

  17. GMS reminds me of Damien Duff. Runs and runs lolls knackered but the gets up and runs again. His tracking back last night was excellent.

Aside from that, it takes an Englishman to point out that Rangers supporters are racist sectarian right wing bigots. Some might say this is entrapment from Collymore as he is getting the reaction from them he knows he will get.

We are the only one of Celtic and Rangers to be mentioned on National tv as singing sectarian songs but Collymore crusade has the possibility for more far reaching consequences than Nevins colloquial comments. How many people follow Collymore who are they and what influence do they have.? So far he has posted pictures of Rangers supporters doing their dodgy salutes and standing next to a bnp poster amongst other things. They won’t exactly be winning any friends.

  18. Sad to hear that Andy McCann passed away this morning, 37 years on the ground staff at Celtic,

    A lovely man, always smiling,

He helped to arrange for my Dads ashes to be scattered on the park, that was 26 years ago,

My thoughts and prayers are with his family,

    YNWA

  19. Weeminger

Unfortunately I have never seen any keeper make a mistake like that, so your right , it is a difficult one to resolve.

The first goal is a different matter – the ball wS probably going out of pkay and CGs mistake put it back in play.

As I said to Geordie Munro, with 5 minutes to HT, the manager should have got a message to players saying keep it at 2:2 , regroup, & win second half

  20. bournesouprecipe on

    Awe_Naw

    I agree it’s not Stan Collymore’s job, however it’s not PL’s either.

I fear for Collymore, but he really didn’t bring it on himself, he tweets what he wants.

I think we should focus on what is being said by (SC) and not on who, or why he said it.

The absurdity that 20 Chelsea fans can’t, but 20,000 Sevconians can is the crux of the matter.

  21. Some pure roasters on here tonight.Unbelievable guff being spouted.I will leave the rest of you with them.

  22. “My concern is with 4 minutes to HT, why didn’t he let the ball go out of play, and get to HT at 2:2

    Clashcity,

There is absolutely no guarantee that the ball was going out.

The goal came 23 seconds after cg kicked it out. The team wasn’t undone due to overly attacking.
