Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

  1. “Your right that model doesn’t work in football – football managers need to be much more ruthless.”

    Clashcity,

And that comment almost doesn’t deserve a response.

Just jumped a page to ask you to slow down with your killer tunes.

As I told you last week, you are my favourite poster and I look and listen fully at everything you post. Away to listen to Sinead again. A song I sung in Belfast last week. Much to 16roads approval. :)

1/ no I wouldn’t want to scrap a draw and progress as walter the myth did, we are better than that. I would rather go out fighting rather than play negative football. TBH I would be embarrassed if we got through to a finale playing negative tatics.

2/ I honestly think we will.

Do you think the team that played last night would be outplayed by Legia?

  4. Mulllet and co 2…been saying it all night…SC can take this Far…not being racist or anything just being realistic but a black englishman speaking out allover the uk will get more recognition than We ever could…he deserves All our support….

  6. My estimations of Armstrong and GMS remains as it was before they don’d a hoops Jersey…

For me, Armstrong is the class act. Ronny might be on to something when he likened him to Muller at Bayern.

Clever, intelligent…. Uses the ball well… Picks his moments… Scores goals… Out smarts the opposition.

GMS on the other hand, is certainly decent. Not of the same level… Last night I admired his effort, his work rate… But at times he looked limited… Not a dig at the guys… He done well, as did most in the team.

He’s just the lesser of the two.

Indeed the mistake was CGs, but watch it again as the ball landed in front of the attacker it skidded and caught Craig IMO off balance. He had a decision to make and made the wrong one (just like the first goal).

As you say enough in the credit bank and the 94 minute save added back credits,

  8. Great game last night. Watched it with my ill dad – who seemed to improve dramatically when we scored…

My wish was that we kept the tie alive and now I think we can go over there and win it.

My old man has been taken into hospital tonight so I may have to go and show him the goals again to perk him up :)

Parking a bus fitba wise is an alien concept

    for Ronny.

I would rather receive a football humping

playing with energy and expression than

being gubbed playing anti football © the cardigan.

Lost count, last night, of the multiple times

our full backs were beyond the forwards.

I previously thought this was fitba suicide when playing decent teams.

    Not now.

Better fitness, better game awareness , a collective unit.

    It all adds up.

    Sit back and enjoy.

No doubt we will take a few beatings.

    We’ll also take some scalps.

    Hope you are well,

Agreed that ball skidded in wet grass, but, I think that if CG had been in less haste to keep ball in play, he could have ushered it out, and we would have gone in 2:2 at HT….and we could have won 3:2

  13. Ruggyman, Deffo agreed with you bud. CG got us to this stage in this tournament with his displays in the previous games so no one can legislate for the guy having an off night … Of all nights. As for Ronny’s team, when was the last time you saw a Celtic team keep their heads up after going down 0-2 so early in the game and come back with belief in themselves to grind that result out? Amazing result, amazing game. Might not go through to the next round but probably only because in Milan it will finish 2-2. HH

    WELL

Pat Nevin on 5Live again discussing the Chelsea racial abuse in Paris…

He came on after the presenter (Stephen Nolan) had played a heart rending interview with the Parisian who tried to board the train.

I posted on this last night so won’t go through it all again.

Suffice to say Dr Nevin was an Apologist for Chelsea again.

The thing is when the presenter tried to pin the good Doctor down on why Chelsea hadn’t got in touch with Souleymane S he provaracated and tried to read out a press realise from Chelsea, Stephen Nolan stopped him and said well that’s the official press realise… Doctor Pat then said he wouldn’t duck the question and he wasn’t employed by Chelsea.

He did not refer to them as Chelsea supporters once…

Now I know he writes for the official website and he stated that he was at Stamford Bridge when the News of the attack came in.

Now does anybody know if he receives money from Chelsea?

After he’s dragged Celtic Football Team’s name through the mud, it would be nice to know what motivates Doctor Nevin to be an Apologist for Chelsea Football Clubs racist element.

  16. Maribor horsed us out this years cl.

We were 15 mins from qualifying.

This current team would pump Maribor im, but I believe we are learning more in the El than we would in the cl.

  17. RWE – God bless your bhoy and may he rest in peace. Tony must have been an exceptional kid as his story moved us all. Not a praying man but I am tonight. Love to you and all your friends and family affected by his leaving the field of play.

  18. Chairbhoy,

Often the way these things work is that the sites are subcontracted, so although an individipual is not ( or is ) on club payroll, at most, he is likely to be one step removed.

Bottom line is folks like him won’t bite the feeding hand.

Wee Jay winning Goal of the Month. What a story.

Stan Collymore being racially abused live on TV by Rangers fans in chorus. I despair.

You are correct. They shame us,and those in authority who turn a blind eye to their antics shame us.

Stan Collymore shames us too,but in a different way. Simply by having the balls to confront them.

the SPFL positively shied away from it. PL has influence to bring but either doesn’t or agrees there is nothing to be done. It does not sit well with the other bodies he is trying to impress to bring back standing and alcohol. It should enable an increased bonus on the back of the return of the huns but it’s dinosaur thinking. He does not seem to be winning many concessions for us while we are raking it in.

  24. andy mccann

i 1st met andy in 1987. i was working in celtic park, on the extension to the front of the south (main) stand. took me to see the trophy room and the coronation cup was on the big boardroom type table.

he also took me up to the old press box, fergus was right to take it from the press, it truly is the best seat in the hoose.

i had no problem when he asked me to fit a door closer on the bootroom door.

i met some of the players, maestro, billy stark, mark mcghee and a few others. this was down to andy introducing me to them.

RIP andy mccann, a credit to celtic and one of our finest
