Need to find edge to match United

935

Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice.  For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action.  For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season.  United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions.  Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.

For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow.  I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.

We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger.  Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

    Ah, ye olde saltmarket bus

memories of a midweek pittodrie trip about 15 years ago, 4 of us jumped on that bus for the trip up – one and only time on it

Not sure the members were too happy that we had rucksacks of bevvy

Stopped at a pub on the road home, it was full of sheep who werent too happy that a full bus of tims had marched in

pub had a wee side bar that wasnt serving at the time, but we just turned into impromptu bar staff and poured our own drinks, on the house of course!

pub manager not too happy and kindly invited us to to leave

rest of the bus wasnt too happy with us

but we still had supplies in the rucksack and just sang the whole way home, while everyone else was trying to sleep

i dont remember hearing the bus convener saying ‘thanks for using the bus boys, you are welcome back any time’

still brings a smile to my face when i see that bus when im travelling to games

I was at a funeral yesterday for a big guy I knew and afterwards the family invited us back for a few drinks in a pub one of them owns. The boozer is deep in the heart of Bridgeton and obviously a big Sevco shop. Anyway the jukebox was full blast with Beatles Stones etc (no war songs) and a right good atmosphere, when to my surprise on comes Rod with ‘your in my heart’. I couldnt believe my ears and as it got to the bit ‘your Celtic, United’ I carefully looked around expecting a reaction….no one batted an eyelid. I reckon me and Mrs ME were the only two tims in the joint, and we didnt play it. So there ye go.

  17. Masty….

Always find London football fans to be the least knowledgable about fitba out of the many I have experienced.Particularly the Man United lovers haha.

Any West Ham fans I have met are deluded and think because they are EPL makes them bigger than that ‘Irish mob from Jockland ‘ as a couple of them told me in an Algarve pub last year. They are a small club with a horrible little stadium and an equally horrible manager.

Don’t like London football teams…….none of them…..So patronising towards Celtic in my experience.

Have a few mates still living there….I like them just not the clubs they follow.

  18. Samaras in and Griffiths on the bench is a surprise.

Pity there isn`t a right back available because Gary Mackay Stevens will be a danger. Herron played there in the last u20 match.

    1). …. Pertinent questions. 31 Replies

I have today submitted the following questions to the Rangers Press Office.

Is it true that a supporter has made a donation to cover some of the costs of the hotel stay for the team before the Ramsden’s cup final?

Is it true that there is utility bill (three months electricity charges) currently outstanding?

Will the club/company require further emergency finance to meet the payroll for April?

Was there a meeting between Mr McCoist, Mr Philip Nash and Mr Graham Wallace at Murray Park recently about Mr McCoist’s associations with ex-club/company directors?

Is it true that the first team Manager Mr McCoist has been spoke to about having recent unauthorised meetings with Mr Malcolm Murray, Mr Paul Murray and Mr Walter Smith?

Is it true that these unauthorised meetings allegedly took place in Ayrshire, Edinburgh and Glasgow?

Is it also true that Mr McCoist was spoken to about these alleged meetings last Thursday at Murray Park?

During that meeting was Mr McCoist warned not to discuss budgets or player acquisitions with the media in future?

I will publish their answers when they become available to me.

This morning I put the following questions to the press office at ‘Rangers’.

Can you please confirm that a Mr George Angus is an employee of your company/club?

Is Mr Angus engaged by your company/club as a consultant?

Did Mr Angus hold the title of ‘facilities manager’ at your company/club?

What role, if any, has Mr Angus had in the financial affairs of your company/club?

Was Mr Angus introduced to your company/club by Mr Iain Morgan of Active Corporate?

Was the hiring of Mr Angus sanctioned by Mr Charles Green?

Can you confirm that Mr Angus was asked to leave his office within your establishment yesterday (Friday 4th April 2014)?

Was Mr Angus escorted off the premises?

What is the status now of Mr Angus within your company/club?

I am awaiting a response to these questions and I will publish it here when I get it from the company/club that operates out of Ibrox.

    Preparing to fail?

You might be familiar with the expression ‘never take a knife to a gunfight’.

It is essentially about the dangers of being poorly prepared.

In his pre-Saipan days Roy Keane was apparently very fond of saying:

“Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”.

I must say that I have to agree with the driven Corkman.

In my experience successful people tend to do preparedness very well indeed.

Therefore I was surprised to learn from two excellently placed sources of some of the details of the recent meeting between Mr Dave King and several members of the board of Rangers International Football Club (RIFC).

This was the meeting that Mr King was requested to attend by RIFC Chairman Mr David Somers.

I think it is fair to say that what unfolded in the meeting rather surprised the RIFC chaps present.

Representing the company/club/spiritual entity was Mr David Somers, Mr Graham Wallace and Mr Philip Nash.

I understand that the minutes of the meeting were taken by Mr Nash’s Personal Assistant.

Mr King turned up holding a thin A4 folder.

When the meeting got under way the South Africa based entrepreneur asked for a piece of paper and a pen as he wanted to take some notes.

This request rather surprised the RIFC chaps on the other side of the table that he would attend such an important meeting without such basic implements.

The South African based businessman was then challenged that he “had nothing to offer” by a senior RIFC chap.

It was then also put to the Glasgow born multi-millionaire by one of the RIFC chaps that the board considered that Mr King wanted to engineer the liquidation of the company.

This, the RIFC board member continued, was how Mr King planned to acquire Ibrox stadium cheaply.

I, of course, cannot comment on whether or not that is indeed Mr King’s plan.

However, I am surprised that he attended such an important meeting in an apparently ill prepared way.

The A4 folder in question was apparently empty and there was no legal document, no briefing notes or anything else inside it.

Like the RIFC chaps I find this puzzling given Mr King’s public statements in the period leading up to that meeting.

They expected more from Mr King, some proposal or plan.

I have put these questions to Mr King via the email address he has used to correspond with me in the past.

So far he has not replied to my missives on this subject.

If he does then I will, of course, publish his response.

  24. A bit shocked by the team. Can’t see the logic of playing Sammi, presumably Leigh’s demotion to the bench is a public rap on the knuckles. Would have liked to see O’Connell get another start but not to be. Delighted that Henderson is playing, delighted to see Mouyokolo on the bench.

I’d like to think Griffiths has been dropped for being a mediocre player who can score against SPFL dross, but yeah, he’s probably been dropped for singing.
