Need to find edge to match United

935

Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice.  For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action.  For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season.  United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions.  Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.

For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow.  I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.

We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger.  Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

Sad to hear of the passing of Margo MacDonald she was 1 of the few independent voices even when she was an SNP MSP & that didn’t suit Salmond.

She supported my first Mason reg petition & was moved to make way for Duncan Hamilton, a Mason, and adviser to Salmond who scuppered it then chucked parliament and went to the Scotsman then Faculty of Advocates. A fat son of the manse.

She was head and shoulders above the duffers who are there now.

Thanks for the insight, RIP Margo, she was obviously a rare politician, not self serving.

The Very Existence of the Queen Is Against Any Notion of Democracy

    16 May 2011

This is just one of a number of compelling charges set down by Morrissey in an article written for Hot Press, to coincide with the Queen’s visit to Ireland

The Queen’s visit to Ireland is part of a new Palace PR campaign to re-invent the Windsors. The message from the Queen will be the same as ever: who we are born to is more important than what we achieve in life.

It should be remembered by the Irish people that as recently as the turn of the 1980s the Queen supported Margaret Thatcher by not dismissing Thatcher as she allowed hunger strikers to die at the Maze Prison, most famously Bobby Sands, who was 27 years old. As Sands starved to death in protest at being tagged a ‘criminal’ and not a ‘political prisoner’ by the Thatcher government, the Queen sat in her Palace and said nothing. If the Queen had any human feelings for the Sands family or other hunger strikers then she did not express them.

The full meaning of the Monarchy is, like the Queen herself, a complete mystery to most people. It is protected from any investigations by ridiculous stories of trivia and wedding dresses and on-again-off-again soap-drama romances. The most revealing statement came from Commander Christine Jones of the Metropolitan Police last month, when she warned that any British people carrying anti-royal placards who are “seen in the vicinity of the royal wedding would be removed under the Public Order Act.” This means that any political dissent in England is silenced in order to protect the royals, which in itself goes against every principle of democracy.

The very existence of the Queen and her now enormous family – all supported by the British taxpayer whether the British taxpayer likes it or not – is entirely against any notion of democracy, and is against freedom of speech. For a broad historical view of what the Queen is and how she “rules”, examine Gaddafi or Mubarak, and see if you can spot any difference.

    You won’t be able to.

The Queen also has the power to give back the six counties to the Irish people, allowing Ireland to be a nation once again. The fact that she has not done so is Fascism in full flow. What else could it be? Name one other European country that is controlled by its neighbour?

    Morrissey. From a Q questionnaire, 1995:

What characteristics do you think you’ve inherited from your parents?

“Irish defiance, Northern humility, implacable benevolence, not bad looks.”

    My friends in Celtic

I’m taking a short break in Barcelona for 4 days starting next Saturday. Any advice on things not to miss, things to watch out for etc from this learned community would be very much appreciated. I understand that half past three in the morning is not the best time to ask but, if anyone has any tips, it would be brilliant

    skyisalandfill,

If you like music and concert halls, try the Palau de la Musica Catalana, not widely known about but stunning inside, I done the English tour last year, the Boqueria Market for the colours alone and the Sagradia for the sheer splendour, altogether a quite magnificent place but very busy all the time, be careful with your valuables when out walking.

I’m sure many others will offer you many other things to do. Enjoy

    Cannae wait!

    Thanks again
