Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

  1. I’ve no real interest in Hibs except that I know lots of Hibees from school days and from the village.

    Fine people.

My thoughts are with them tonight.

My fear for them is that they may take a while to get back up.

They have run their club properly ( Apart from appointing Butcher) and they pay their bills. They have lived within their means unlike their City rivals who have had an unfair sporting advantage for years and have employed players they couldn’t afford and ripped off the Lithuanian tax payer for millions.

So they will be up against a debt free Hearts and a nearly debt free Sevco . Sevco , whose dead predecessors robbed the British taxpayer of millions.

As I said I fear for Hibs up against 2 teams like that who are prepared to do anything to win.

Hail James Connolly, the Irish rebel!

Isn’t football a great thing, good honest professionals getting their reward for hard work and endeavour .Clubs that want to live on past glory, getting their just deserts .

Out of curiosity….will you ‘out’ these ‘bloggers’ that you are known by? I assume you mean CQNers….?

I have no idea why this is part of the referendum debate, because personally I think this is down to the government elected after independence should it comes about. The pension rules will change from government to government.

Anyway this is part of what the white paper said:

    “State Pensions

The proportion of tax revenues taken up by social protection (including state pensions) is lower in Scotland than the UK, so these benefits are currently more affordable here.

We will ensure that current pensioners will receive their pensions as now, on time and in full. All accrued rights will be honoured and protected, and planned reforms will be rolled out, including the single-tier pension.”

As the current proposals do not bind a future government can you say for certain that “these plans be maintained” after the 2015 general election?

  7. Well done Hamilton Accies. A far better football team than Hibs, they kept trying to play the ball on the deck and didn’t resort to hoofing the ball up the park.

  11. Aye, that Real Madrid may have ‘La Decima’ but they need the Ramsdens to get some proper stars on their shirts.

  17. Well said , Obvserver, well said indeed, and about time too I have to say.

My impression of Henrik, as high as they are, has increased. I just love the integrity of him and those who remember his contract negotiations with us will remember how straight he was in all aspects of his dealings. A rare commodity in this day and age. He is an outstanding human being and I’m sure he would be good for us. Only thing is, does he want the merde that surely goes with the job, his call.

I reckon we should go for Steve McLaren, there you go. Money aside Celtic has everything he surely wants for a manager as ambitious as he is. I like the guy.

My dream ticket would be a joint managershhip, Lambert and Henke.

The hunbigots have their work cut out if they fancy winning the 1st Division now I think, great stuff.

I never said you were a member of the SNP.

Yes, I’m denying I made the posts in the manner you mentioned.

You can’t just take a paragraph from a heated exchange and quote.

Take things in context and we did agree further to those posts, I think on this, that I had been dealt with a bit harshly.

I repeat I will not sit back and let you or anyone slag my country off.

Scotland has faults but nowhere near as bad as you and Ernie keep saying it is.

Now, I read you reply to my long diatribe of the other day and you have the wrong end of the stick entirely!

One of the things I don’t like at times about the internet you can never hear the tone or the voice of the writer.

Can I say most sincerely your post of the other day did not cause me any upset at all and I most certainly do not have a low or poor opinion of you and I most definitely don’t want you to think that I do.

This is a blog. A place to exchange thoughts, opinions, stories and whatever.

It will never be a substitute for a pub and face to face chat — one of the things I love most in the world — and there I have spent the best part of 35 years talking, yakking, opinionating, philosophising and generally talking cobblers — and al the time you have to listen to others and their opinions which you might agree with or not.

I don’t take offence at anything very easily, and I certainly don’t think that folk with a counter opinion to me on any subject are anything other than pals with a different opinion.

Dinna take this blog malarkey too seriously. It is bad for the digestion.

    Up the rhebels!

Lots of magic nights in there mate , that was one of them.

  24. Cowiebhoy. Sorry. We are the champions. of Europe. Got caught up in the excitement and forgot to let people know we won 2-1. What a team. You would not believe the scenes at the end. The pitch was invaded by some guy in a kilt and them masses of others.

Was a bit upset for the team. We did not get to see them all being presented with the Cup. Big Billy…God knows how….managed to get back through the crowd on the pitch to go up to receive the cup. He was perched up on high like a mighty Caesar when he actually got the trophy.

Just out at the airport now to say good by to the guys who are going home tonight. You will never believe this you can only get into the airport if you show a passport or you are wearing a Celtic scarf, my method of entry, as my passport is back at the hotel.

A bhoy just passed me with a flag over his shoulder and at the top of the pole there was what looked like a small picture frame in silver with the word Celtic clearly printed on it. I asked him where he got it and he turned to me with the;look of a conquering hero and simply said “Aff the dressing room door”. Then he disappeared in the direction of the planes.

Scenes here are magic. The joy on every face is incredible. It as if all are in seventh heaven. Euphoria all round. Am away to catch up with some more of my friends to soak up this atmosphere with them. Then back to Estoril, but it will not be an early bed tonight.
