Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

  1. Last time Hibs got relegated it did them the power of good. I genuinely think Ally will be bricking it at the moment. Even he won’t survive failure to get out of the championship…

Note to Fitba authorities: Accies are up & Hibs are down as a result of Sporting Merit.

Remember that & don’t interfere to protect a brand!

How long before the calls come for a bigger top league ?

  7. Fools the lot o ye bhoys! Hibs going down will increase sevco season ticket sales. Watch how the media spin the 1st division as the more exciting league!!

  8. Snake Plissken on

The thing is Sevco know they only have to get to 4th to get to a play off and then the honest mistakes will kick in.

Hearts currently are a better side than they are.

Hibs are pure guff but if they sack Butcher, they have a chance.

Falkirk, Livingston, Dumbarton and Raith will be no pushovers in that league.

This would need to be the season of the honest mistake to end them all given the non-quality in their team.

Dundee are a fairly well supported team

The reduction in travelling support from the Edinburg teams will have a minimal effect on league revenue

In the case of DU ..they now have a derby.. As do Motherwell

StJ have another local match too as do Aberdeen

No Hearts or Huns cause they weren’t run properly and no Hibs cause they’re a very poor team

  10. I always hated going to Embra- never saw the attraction in the tram worshipping, we’ve got a hill and a castle with a gun, you’ll have had your tea, we like rugby and cricket here, private school festooned, mime artist dominated Festival, Walter Scott myths, crap Panda Zoo, can’t park anywhere, and Royal Mile Tartan Shawl Shop culture.

Much better to be going to Hamilton.

As one who has a fondness for Hibernian FC,tonight I have a feeling of sadness but this is the worse Hibernian team I have ever seen.Surely Butcher must resign,an utter shambles of a team.

Hibernian Hearts and Sevco in the lower League ,all for a reason.

Hibs and hearts are pish. Why would that help Sevco ST sales ? More likely to put the hun glory hunters off but it will be a mib lead procession. Will the New lady of Hearts speak out ? Levine has already corrupted himself and Petrie will keep mum.

Well the gall on Butcher is incredible saying he’ll stay.

6th when he took over, would have been bottom but for Hearts’ deduction and now blows a 2 goal first leg league.

Already these muppets saying more Armageddon because Hibs and Hearts and some other team are not there and the crowds will go down.

Accies deserve it. They now have a derby with Motherwell, the Dundee and Highland derbies are still there, St Johnstone are cup holders and Aberdeen are stronger than they’ve been in years.

If crowds take a hit then that is the nature of the beast, we’ll adapt and get on with it.

Merit on the park should be the only consideration from here on in.

    Sporting merit.

The whole idea of us getting into the EPL without working our way through the division’s(if we were allowed to join another nations league)is wrong.

Kinda gives credence to the Celtic nation theory…..mmmm?

Who would have thought that a fairer distribution of money from the spl clubs would be brought down to the lower divisions by some of those clubs themselves!
