Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

Never lost any sleep when NTL (Nae Treble Lennon) walked out the door

But will toss and turn over the next few nights with my decision to renew my season ticket for Celtic park without knowing who was going to actually be in our league next season

I was born in Partick. Your cousin Tam and I went to school together. We remain friends. Magic! :)

  4. Oh and billy bhoy 05 I have now read your post where you say you want evidence of you looking forward to ridding Scotland of Union voters and comparing union voters with the OO and the BNP.

They are still on this blog and are a matter of record.

You seem to be in denial and have had similar debates with ernie who in the past gave you the time and dates of the responses.

You are clearly a liar and a fantisist too.

Your eagerness to find out more about ernie (bob may have been talking about me) shows your desperation to witch hunt people.

You are a low life. You deny you made those posts but why on earth would any of us make it up.

You have come on this site to peddle lies and half truths about independence. You have nothing else to offer.

    Is that all you have?

  14. Does anybody out there really think that the Scottish government ( sic ) has any real power out there? Compared to say those who work in justice (Edinburgh court case verdict of not proven in Neil´s case) or media, football´s paymaster of today or the people who work in law or lack of law enforcement in our wee colony?

How long before the calls come for a bigger top league ?

    ————————————-

Funnily…..or not so…..enough, i had been thinking that a bigger division might actually be something that Scottish Football might contemplate now……and that was before Hibs relegation today.

I have actually thought it might be a chance for other clubs to mount a challenge to Celtic and Rangers, although sadly(cough)they now NO LONGER EXIST.

Playing Celtic and Rangers in 8 league games a season meant that invariably the other clubs in the league struggled to win any of those games.

IF…..we had a 16 team league…..even when the huns existed……perhaps Hibs…..no wait….Hearts…..ah…..say Motherwell, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd…..could be the best of the rest and beat the other teams as consistently as we do?

Motherwell have been 2nd the last 2 seasons which is pretty consistent…..can they become better?

Can another team become a bit better than the rest and give us the competition desired?

Perhaps another manager like Fergie or Jim McLean may come to the fore again or a manager will be given the time he really needs to develop a team without getting sacked halfway through a season because the league is so cut-throat?

If ANY of these clubs can compete with us as consistently against the other 14 clubs, then a game at their own stadium or at Paradise might be a title decider.

I know we have greater resources and in theory be too strong but if we are only facing another challenger twice……who knows what THEY could be doing in the other games?

Ironically…..although i have felt the league should consist of 16 teams for years…..the league this year has been exciting in some ways for every club even though the top and bottom places were almost guaranteed before a ball was kicked, so maybe this format does have something?

    Anyway….that is just me…..and NO…..I am not a hun!

To quote the scribe that is oor Kev(legend for that very thing)…..i am aff oot…..more beer to be consumed :P

Billy bhoy 05. When you can explain why no supporters are the same as members of the OO or the BNP and why you will Remove those who vote for the union then perhaps you will be taken seriously.

Four Green Fields, I was in the Smiddy after the St Patrick’s Day massacre and then onto the Pogues at the Barras. The Smiddy was absolutely bouncing and was a great warm up for the fantastic Pogues. Lou Reed’s perfect day was so apt after beating the stickies then seeing Shane and his crew .

I knew the chap who ran it in the early nineties, Stephen Curran. He was a friend of mine from school. We were in there for a well behaved stag night and he wasn’t exactly your genial tavern host despite the amount we spent . I have been in it very rarely since unfortunately.

Delaney’s, did you knowSteph Campbell lived in Boreland? I was in Loanfoot Avenue. Celtic was the connection to get to know a lot of good guys in Knightswood. Mickbhoy1888 totally agree if PL doesnt get this right, no gambles, rookies, projects for both players and managers. If so we could be looking at shutting stands and lose peripheral income. We need cl group stages as a minimum and manager needs backing not selling our best players. If we do then its the managers shout.

Can I say most sincerely your post of the other day did not cause me any upset at all and I most certainly do not have a low or poor opinion of you and I most definitely don’t want you to think that I do.

This is a blog. A place to exchange thoughts, opinions, stories and whatever.

It will never be a substitute for a pub and face to face chat — one of the things I love most in the world — and there I have spent the best part of 35 years talking, yakking, opinionating, philosophising and generally talking cobblers — and al the time you have to listen to others and their opinions which you might agree with or not.

I don’t take offence at anything very easily, and I certainly don’t think that folk with a counter opinion to me on any subject are anything other than pals with a different opinion.

To sustain free prescriptions, free bus passes for the over 60s and other laudable initiatives such as no university fees, in the event of a September ‘Yes’ vote can anyone give me an idea what rate of income tax will be required? Can it be done on the 20p standard rate that currently exists or will it require a rise in the standard rate and, if so, roughly how much.

I would also like further information on the newly independent Scottish Government’s plans for old age pensions. These are set to significantly increase in 2016 for new pensioners in the UK. Will these plans be maintained or will the new Scottish Government have other plans. I would like information on what these plans are.

Can anyone help me with information on these issues?
