Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Order your dedicated copy of Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best at the fancy new CQN Bookstore.

Fair play to Hamilton Accies. Not many clubs can claim to have produced two players, friends both, who went on to play in the EPL. One now at Everton, and the other, still in the Championship, possibly heading for Goodison.

Och I stole that from my Dad, some Hun at his work was rambling on about the Ramsden Cup and he hit him with that, he was telling me about it yesterday and laughing away about it.

Four Green Fields, I only knew Steph. I got to know him through George.

The Smiddy and the Dolphin are each an oasis in the sticky bun desert of Partick. The stickies would beseige the Smiddy even when they beat us. They are a strange lot.

Delaney’s, Steph was a few years younger than you so it;s unlikely your paths crossed.

I was often asked if I played for Celtic Boys club. It was obvious those who asked me had never seem me attempt to play football lol.

I’m now in East Kilbride. I fell asleep on the 66 one night and have never managed to make the return journey. .

Fortunately, through the blog, I’ve realised there’s more Celtic fans than I thought up here.

The road down to Celtic Park is great as on a clear day, you can see our stadium. I still swell up with joy seeing it. I could never see it from the lowlands of the West End.

There would not be a finer sight in the world than to see your green fingered sevconian neighbour being woken from his sleep to the sound of the whole garden bursting into a chorus of the boys of the old brigade.

One of the plus points of today’s game is that Hamilton are not scared to go into lower Leagues and the Juniors to get players and coaching them very well.

Darian MacKinnon, the Accies midfielder, was playing in the West Juniors Premier league for Clydebank last season. He looks like and plays a bit like Broonie.

One of my son’s former team mates has been pro-youth with Hamilton for two years and is part of the Scotland u/15 set up. The last time I spoke to him, he told me the coaching he has at Hamilton has improved his natural talent no end. I hope he makes it, he always played with a smile as big as his ability.

Truly remarkable results. Surprised that you are surprised at Sunday Indo article particularly with “writers” ( now that really is stretching it) like Ruth Fudley Dudley Edwards and Eoughan super stick Harris.

Their articles last week in advance of the elections were absolutely scurrilous and designed to “queer the pitch”. It’s a blue shirt rag to be treated in the same way as the DR and has the same journalistic integrity. Ignore it, don’t buy it and ensure its circulation figures head the same way as the DRs.

TBJ, they have been building there for the past two years at least.I thought it was flats being constructed. Normally builders have new flats up in about six months now.

My nosiness about if has finally been put to rest, thank you. It’s well seeing Mr Haughey is a millionaire, he will need to keep the heating on as it will be feezing there despite the great view of Celtic Park to keep his spirit warm.

City Refrigeration’s old call centre buildings next to Shawfield have been flattened. I went by there on the bus last week and couldn’t believe the changes along with a new pedestrian bridge just along from the road bridge.

The view from the new road from Shawfield up to Celtic Park is even better since the Celtic Way was opened.

G’kids safely deposited back at their mothers in EK. Had a great weekend with them, they helped me out in the garden as I was building a fence round the patio. Saw marks are to be found on almost everything in the garden. Nails were hamered in to every surface that could take it. We now have a plant pot that resembles a hedgehog and I fear the trampoline may need replaced as Jayden tried cutting it in half. but hey who was the idiot that gave them the tools.

Already I am missing them, the noise, the screams and shouts, along with their ability to decimate a room in seconds simply gives me unbridled joy.

Life can be a pain at times, job insecurity, money worries etc but the poor joy of innocent children is something that gladdens my heart and puts a smile on my face.

We’re off on holiday in a couple of weeks and in the car on the way back to East Kilbride we were kidding the kids on that we had to choose someone not to go as the plane was full. Reasons for someone not going were explored, he farts, she’s got smelly feet etc. It was then decided I wasn’t to go as I was so annoying, then Jayden shouts “but Papa’s the funny one, we can’t leave him”. I was so chuffed, I just try to make them laugh and it seems they have noticed. On the way home I kept reminding Isobel that I was the funny one, I don’t think she thought I was funny.
