Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

    Whit aboot the Hamilton physio?

Never mind a manager – get her signed.

Saw her in the 1st game and thought……if i was an Accies player, i would NEVER be off that treatment table!

I have spoken recently with a few Herty and hibs fans this weekend and they know their place. A play off or at least two years in the championship

  4. People will bemoan the lack of quality in the SPL next season, but Hibs will not be missed. A truly shambolic club. The likes of Dons, United, St Johnstone Well have good enough quality to keep things reasonably interesting…

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Delaney’s, Easter Road was never the most welcoming place.

A crowd of us were in the old two tier terracing at a league cup section (remember them) game in August 1981. They were 1 nil up at half time but Dom Sullivan, I’m sure, equalised five minutes after the restart. It all kicked off and we we were fortunate to get out into the Celtic End, in one piece.

I used to call them Hibernation as they hibernated all season, boom boom.

Did you know George Glancy from Knightswood, he would have been a few years above you at St Tams.. His dad was one of the passkeepers at Corpus Christi. His cousin from Jordanhill was a Hibs fan but couldn’t explain why. We gave the cousin a right good slagging about his team.

  6. the championship will be a great league with hearts hibs and sevco in it

oh, hang on, they are there cos they are utter garbage, apart from sevco who are there cos they are working their way up from their beginnings, but are also garbage, so it will be a very low quality league if this seasons performances by those clubs is anything to go by

  9. Cowiebhoy, the temperature has just risen in the stadium. The half time whistle just blew a few moments ago and the Italian who has been refusing to move all first half and has us all crushed up in our seats because he is in the wrong end of the ground has turned to me and said “Herrara no lose now.” Fortunately he ducked in time to avoid my left handed swing at his head. What’s more be has taken off.

We may be 1-0 down but at least I have my seat back.

I used to drink with George Glancy in the Smiddy in Partick and went on the Smiddy bus to the games for years .

  11. First time I have ever heard this at end of a game.

Young congratulates Hamilton player for his performance today and he responds with

    ” Thank you very much”

Did anyone heard about the protest from a well known bar in Glasgow to Ibrox yesterday being kettled by the police?

  13. Snake Plissken on

Well the gall on Butcher is incredible saying he’ll stay.

6th when he took over, would have been bottom but for Hearts’ deduction and now blows a 2 goal first leg league.

Already these muppets saying more Armageddon because Hibs and Hearts and some other team are not there and the crowds will go down.

Accies deserve it. They now have a derby with Motherwell, the Dundee and Highland derbies are still there, St Johnstone are cup holders and Aberdeen are stronger than they’ve been in years.

If crowds take a hit then that is the nature of the beast, we’ll adapt and get on with it.

Merit on the park should be the only consideration from here on in.

    Happy with that

My opinion of Hibs changed the night I heard a celtic legeng say,the worst abuse he has heard directed at celtic in the last few years was at Easter Rd.

    Sevcomedians think big:

“Obviously right now we are hopefully selling alot of season tickets and keeping the cash coming in. But when the season starts and eg we have two away games in a row each Saturday, then thats Ibrox empty for a fair bit of time. Even during the week its empty with very little income except stadium tours and the shop and restaurant.

What could be set up to encourage people to visit Ibrox and its surrounding area?

    – Open training days £5 entry

    – Gigs at Ibrox like we used to have

    – Ibrox car wash and valet to get people driving by and stopping off and use the shop and restaurant

    – Treasure hunt for kids round Ibrox and Govan and they get a party afterwards. Policed by rangers youth players.

    – Go karts area set up in the car park that lies empty most of the week

    – Laser quest in around the Ibrox corridors which dont get used/Edmiston House”

    ——

“An auction to train with the first team for a day. A meet your heroes day where guys like Laudrup, Gazza, Goram, Ally ect have an informal meet and greet for say 50-60 supporters paying a tenner each (just throwing numbers out here) Adventure days for kids like the treasure hunt idea. Show reruns of big matches from yesteryear on the big screen for a couple of quid a ticket (might be popular might not) there’s lots of stuff we could do but don’t for some reason.”

    ——

” One idea that I think would be good but probably hasn’t been considered by anyone is having cars around the pitch that people could pay to sit in and watch the game.”

bognorbhoy oscar in my thoughts – thats a great quiz question, where in Scotland is Burntis Land? Not too many would get it right:-)

Can believe that. Contrary to what many believe Hibs ( especially the supporters ) are no soul buddies of Celtic.

Knew Mr Glancy and George well. Great people! Sadly we lost Mr Glancy about 5 years ago. Corpus Christi and Knightswood folk showed tremendous respect for his requiem mass.
