Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

  1. I know I should be worried about the potential loss of another big club from the SPFL but I am more delighted for Frankie MacAvoy, the Hamilton Asst. Manager, who I last saw on an SFA Youth coaching course being taken by our own Tommy McIntyre. Frankie was by far, the outstanding coach, in that group and I am glad to see him flourish up the ladder at Hamilton.

Hamilton’s Spanish Centre Back Garcia Tena reminds me so much of Charlie Mulgrew

Hibs go down they will not get back up until the huns and the baby huns get promotion assured. It could be along time without them.

  3. I read a week or so ago that Celtic & Sevco were to receive funds from FIFA due both have players at the world cup. FIFA will give the money to the SFA for distrobution.

With Sevco possibly not being able to meet May payroll, does anyone think that the SFA will advance them the money to keep them solvent and if they do how would we know..??

  4. Hibs are awful!

Heading out to 6PM Mass now and doubt if they’ll still be an SPFL club when I come out.

  7. Don’t really want to get involved in the how bigoted Scotland is debate.

But yesterday I couldn’t get near to Stirling town centre due to a sectarian march.

And that to me in this day and age is shameful.

The course of action is in the Resolution which is to go to the UEFA Club Financial Control Body and ask them to investigate the SFA.

My feeling is the SFA will not want to go that way so not replying is not an option.

This was discussed in putting it all together

I am confident Glasgow will be spared the unedifying sight of canalamar ‘ s bare arse charging through the Saturday afternoon Argyle St throng.

When I say unedifying I am making an unsighted judgement – for the avoidance of doubt.

When I was in Spain last month I was in the company of Rangers supporters where relationships were cordial and banter merciful.

Good evening from the idyllic hamlet if Montizana near Porec in Croatia. Temperature this afternoon was 26 degrees with clear blue skies.

On the flight out from Edinburgh this morning, the guy on my left saw my Celtic season ticket when I got out some money for a coffee. He started to talk and said he had followed Rangers until a few years ago when he lost interest due to the standard if their play. He now follows English and Spanish football partly because his girlfriend is Spanish. He observes the current Rangers from afar and cannot see any escape from administration.

Later, the mousy looking lady on my right saw me reading an article about Neil Lennon’s future. She volunteered that she was a Dundee United fan. She told me about her years of following Utd with all the ups and downs. To my surprise she finished with “i’ll be happy so long as the wee teams keep beating Rangers”

Just two random strangers. Had to keep my decorum.

Delaney’s, I spent my teenage years in Knightswood but didn’t go to St Tam’s.

The good thing about the Lions was I got to know your good self along with Stevie, Joe & Gerry O’Neill along with that great other Kinightswood bhoy, Jim Reilly.

My pals and I had a great time following the bhoys on the Lions bus. Cokey, despite being an ex VD guy, always had us in stitches. Big Lou came over for the 4 2 game at Ibrox from Andytown and never went back. He was a great laugh also. You were the quiet one of the Doobie Brothers.

Anyone else hear the BT panel before the game say the rumour was that Butcher was walking after today, regardless?

Jason Scotland is causing chaos amongst the Hibs defence. Scored one, made one and generally rummelling them up. A very good player in his time. 35 now and doing well. His electric pace of former years sadly gone but football intelligence remains.

Yeah. I was on Hibs.net a wee while ago – before they closed access to outsiders – and they were talking about it. Wonder if he’s had an approach from Lawell.

    Awe_Naw..,

Another positive apparently missed by some is that the board agreed to confirm their intentions by asking Auldheid to make the statement, that is IMO a shot across the SFA’s bow.

I would like an official statement from the board but I hope the powder is being kept dry to pick their moment to best effect, we’ll see, as I’ve been saying for a wee while, the result is all that matters, preferably we oust and scupper the ambitions of the most corrupt, and the clubs start taking their supporters more seriously, then we have a chance at a real sport, which would be nice.

  26. Wonder if the SMSM will be giving Butcher the third degree over his abuse of the 4th official at ET HT? I’m sure Neil would have got slated

  27. Afternoon all

I have nothing against the Hibs- I lived in Rossie Place for 12 years which is a street just off Easter Road- but I have never seen a team who deserves relegation more. An abysmal team with a terrible manager that would bring nothing to the top league
