Neil Lennon, big and bad enough

463

Neil Lennon is big and bad enough not to need any help from you or me, but he has a job on his hands.  He will prepare a squad to face Hearts twice in the next eight days, which he acquired from Brendan Rodgers in February, and which Brendan largely acquired from Ronny Deila, which is wilting before our eyes.

Injuries abound, the latest, Scott Brown’s broken toe, symptomatic of this season.  Brendan tied himself in all sorts of knots in August, revealing fewer of his intentions to you or me than to Moussa Dembele.  Dedryck Boyata went on strike during the latter, and unsuccessful, stage of our Champions League qualification campaign.  Then Moussa went so off message Brendan decided it was best for him to leave town.

Have you worked in an environment like this?  I have not, but these are just the things we know about.  I doubt it was an easy shift for Brendan to lift the squad as well as he did for the Europa League, League Cup and League campaign.

Then, to cap it all, Brendan turned on his heels a day before we were due to visit Tynecastle and four days before a Scottish Cup visit to Easter Road.  You may have worked in an environment like this, but I doubt you have successfully managed one.

It was demeaning for Neil Lennon to have to defend himself this week.  Not to himself, but to the goldfish who are so unaware of the environment or parameters he has worked in.

Celtic won their first treble the day I was born, but I was 34 before they won their third.  No club has ever won Treble Trebles in a row.  Celtic have never won three consecutive Scottish Cups.  The measure of our current success is so great it is difficult to quantify.

In 1995 we finished fourth in the league, two points behind Hibs and three ahead of Falkirk.  But we went to the Scottish Cup Final that season and won the most magnificent dreary game played.  This is football.  Success is neither easy nor linear and it is never entitled.  Appreciate these times.

Bring lots of change with you on Sunday, this is your one and only chance to buy a Foundation VIII Badge!

  3. In ither news……….

Just caiught up with the boul’ Leo Cullen’s comments re “The Warriors” –

    :)))))))))

…he’s certainly goat the attention of thums, which is doubtless what his intention was. Hook line and sinker comes to mind.

While in the states a few years ago we got talking to the wife of one of the heid bummers at The warriors – while she had the official Wugby Wallah “Newton-Mearns” type accent – she was one of us and her man was deffo one of thems……in fact she waxed lyrically about how thems liquidation had swelled their Wugby ……….ranks…… considerably, although she remarked there was an obvious difference in the cultures / kulchurs.

    *cough*

I got the distinct impression that most o’ thums were about as welcome as a fart in a space suit.

  8. Good morning friends and fellow celebrants and Happy Trophy Day from a damp and grey East Kilbride.

A greight day to be one of the good guys – rejoice and enjoy every passing second. These are truly historic times that we are witnessing.

  9. Has anyone seen much of D. Turnbull from Motherwell?? Looks like he finished the season with 15 goals from midfield at 19.

At the same age Forrest, Armstrong, Brown, Christie and Johnston (currently) were all playing first team football. If you at their stats none scored more than 5 goals.

Now you shouldn’t judge a player solely on goals but from the clips I have seen he is tall, quick and has a good shot. Does he have the legs and skill to be a Brown replacement? Seems a bit of a no brainer at 2-3m. Maybe we could even recoup 1m of that by selling Bitton.

Would be way down my list of priorities behind a Right Back, Centre Halves, midfielders and forwards of repute-ish.

p.s Hope Neil looks a wee bit chirpier today. He deserves the accolades for getting us over the line.

“The entitlement amongst our support is so palpable that it is a bigger obstacle to overcome than any other football club.”

I think the impression that there is entitlement is a misnomer. We are continually told by Paul that we are a “well run club”. We also have an executive that earns £2.5m a year (or 2% of turnover). With that comes an expectation of a certain level of competence, forward planning and innovation; I would argue that the last 18 months has shown a distinct lack of the aforementioned.

For that reason, I don’t particularly like the “enjoy it while it lasts/ungrateful/entitlement” comments as they belie what we are supposed to be: a “well run club”. We should be expecting to push on from our rivals; not watching a club that has been in existence for 7 years and in the top division for 3, inch closer.

I watched the FA Cup final yesterday and after the game Lineker and Shearer both mentioned that City will be buy because (to paraphrase) “great teams push on/buy while on top”. If only this message was directed to those in charge of the purse strings at our club.

Relieved and happy to be heading to Celtic Park to see another Title Trophy handed to us. In the words of GRR Martin, this one has been a bitch.

I don’t think we’ve operated with a centre forward in proper working order for eighteen months. Odsonne’s given us what he could, especially ploughing his lone furrow since September. He’s just a kid and has shouldered an unfair burden for too long. Credit to Scott Sinclair and James Forrest for their scoring contributions but we’re more than thirty goals short of where we should be.

Places of honour go to our goalies and defenders. Party today and at Hampden next week, then bring in two 9s and one 10.

Here we go, for 9IAR! Still three to go.

  13. Big Wavy

You are right. A right back, centre half and striker are much higher priority than a centre mid.

However, we will need a Brown replacement in the next 12 months and if Turnbull is deemed to have the required potential he should be bought and loaned back out like Shved.

  14. Niallo83

We should be in for good young talent but we don’t need this concept ‘Brown replacement’. Some of our best football this season was without Scott in the team and a midfield trio of Callum, Ryan and Tom.

Love the man but the next version of our team should not be hamstrung by an idea that we need a brown replacement. Different men, different team and different setup.

I might even let myself get excited about that amongst all the doom and gloom :)

  15. There are always priorites in positions to be filled, but not always at the expense of good players who are showing great promise of being a “good yin” por cierto.

  16. I think we have to start next season without Scott Brown as a definite starter.

As stated earlier our best form this season came when he was out of the team injured. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to field that team often, due to injuries, but we must begin to adapt to life without “Broonie” por cierto

  17. Considering the verdict mid week, might one of the Killie players think there might be a free pop at Flanagan today. You know considering it is not all that serious of an offence

  18. ClinkO

It certainly won’t be uber-staunch Jordan WATP Jones doing it.

He’s gone full Sevco since January….

  20. Like most here, I haven’t particularly enjoyed this season, between the Huns getting penalties for fun, our horrendous injury statistics, Rodgers doing a runner mid season and the very mixed reaction to Lenny’s efforts, At the moment our football is not attractive and the goals have dried up and we definitely need a fairly major revamp.

However we are Champions & for the moment that is all that matters. I hope the Bhoys & Ghirls that throng Parkhead today have a wonderful time. Win , Lose or Draw our team and our Manager Neil Francis Lennon deserve to be acclaimed.

They tried to cheat us out of this Title, they failed so let’s celebrate it like the one that stopped 10 in a row.

The cares of tomorrow must wait till this day is done,

  21. Champion Day In The Chilterns…

Hope The Maestro, Lenny, The Bhoys at al have a great day.

    EKBHOY @ 6:22 PM,

Thanks for the reply yesterday, was aff oot…

You raised some points that deserve a longer comment, this is not the day…

Suffice to say, I’ve never has a problem with suits… had one myself once. 2/3 of my time on CQN has been happy clapping – but for whatever reason, and I can think of a few, Celtic typify Corporate Britain more than they exemplify the Beautiful Game.

I’m not sure why, but I’m convinced that’s about to change for the better…

And who better, than the Maestro for encapsulating that!!

    Enjoy the day

    Hail Hail

  22. Mr. 100 would you ever amend your name to 100 TROPHIES, I can live with spelling errors but seeing it pop up every time you post is a little disconcerting to say the least,

Hear, hear. I’m a Kouassi fan. There’s a terrific player there and would love to see him do a Ryan Christie next season.

    Thanks for the the education,

As I’ve posted on this site about five times, it must be very worrying for you.

    Hail hail

    C’mon the hoops,

  25. I wish Dedryck all the best, an unfortunate strop initially when Fulham offer refused but he quickly copped himself on and knuckled down to play an important role in securing the 8 in a row. He was never going to renew his contract, we lost out on a few million but we are Champions, we move on.

  26. Mr.100 didn’t mean to offend , I hope you continue to post , hopefully you will be soon 101.
