Neil Lennon, big and bad enough

463

Neil Lennon is big and bad enough not to need any help from you or me, but he has a job on his hands.  He will prepare a squad to face Hearts twice in the next eight days, which he acquired from Brendan Rodgers in February, and which Brendan largely acquired from Ronny Deila, which is wilting before our eyes.

Injuries abound, the latest, Scott Brown’s broken toe, symptomatic of this season.  Brendan tied himself in all sorts of knots in August, revealing fewer of his intentions to you or me than to Moussa Dembele.  Dedryck Boyata went on strike during the latter, and unsuccessful, stage of our Champions League qualification campaign.  Then Moussa went so off message Brendan decided it was best for him to leave town.

Have you worked in an environment like this?  I have not, but these are just the things we know about.  I doubt it was an easy shift for Brendan to lift the squad as well as he did for the Europa League, League Cup and League campaign.

Then, to cap it all, Brendan turned on his heels a day before we were due to visit Tynecastle and four days before a Scottish Cup visit to Easter Road.  You may have worked in an environment like this, but I doubt you have successfully managed one.

It was demeaning for Neil Lennon to have to defend himself this week.  Not to himself, but to the goldfish who are so unaware of the environment or parameters he has worked in.

Celtic won their first treble the day I was born, but I was 34 before they won their third.  No club has ever won Treble Trebles in a row.  Celtic have never won three consecutive Scottish Cups.  The measure of our current success is so great it is difficult to quantify.

In 1995 we finished fourth in the league, two points behind Hibs and three ahead of Falkirk.  But we went to the Scottish Cup Final that season and won the most magnificent dreary game played.  This is football.  Success is neither easy nor linear and it is never entitled.  Appreciate these times.

Re next AGM: on it as a contingency measure.

Hope it isn’t necessary but it seems that to bring SFA to account Celtic have to be brought to account.

  6. CANAMALAR @ 9:52 AM,

    Very much so…

Firstly, a Company Director is an employee of a Company, although they might feel they’re the Boss, that is not the case.

Celtic sold a £30M asset for £20M in August surely it’s not a single individual that can take this sort of decision. It’s other peoples money.

There should be corporate standards and compliance with regard these duties and transactions.

Also in the Broader sense, the goings on in and around Scottish Football in the last ten years, if there has been regulatory malpractice, corporate malfeasance or even criminal repercussions all who had knowledge of these events and choose not to highlight them could be entering into the realms of common purpose.

You will have noted how eager the chartered and professional folk were to tell the truth and purge the secrets and lies in the Dock during Craig Whyte’s trial.

There were quite a few who didn’t have the opportunity to confess…

    CELTICFOREVER @ 10:16, 10:24 AM,

    A couple of points.

As far as the crowd funding to take the issue forward, maybe even a Judicial Review of the SFA’s handling of events. I recall that it was said that no need for this to happen as well heeled Tims were pursuing this and we would be updated.

It turned out to be a damp squid, something about legal dead ends. Of course by that time the impetus was lost and no crowd funding took place.

I’ve become so cynical of the goings on now that I simply don’t believe even these guys without documented evidence.

Of course it doesn’t exist in the public domain.

Wonder if it’s too late to crowd fund.

The other thing is BR was backed… no evidence of that!?

I’m not sure what metric or measure you would use for this but by any measure I would use BR was not backed.

    Firstly player registration transfers…

More players went out than came in

We sold £35Million of Players we bought £25Million.

    Misc…

We had £50M in the Bank whe BR left.

BR wanted John McGinn and several other quality players, Celtic didn’t buy them.

BR wanted quality not quantity, Celtic bought quantity, over a dozen players worth £1M or less.

Celtic bought/loaned players that BR didn’t even know we were bringing in even though he was head of football.

For me that emphatically means he wasn’t backed. I just wonder, as I said, why you believe he was.

    Hail Hail

    Ger57,

Remember which police force started the investigation into corruption and reported rangers to HMRC.

Since our shares are traded in the LSE and this is a shareholder matter I do believe they have jurisdiction over this matter and I would hope they investigate this as diligently as they did back then. I would never expect the scottish plod to properly investigate this which is why I have always pointed to the City of London Police.

The obvious answer to who is responsible for football is to clear the blurry lines and appoint a DoF, which would also create another series of reporting lines , where there is further confusion.

It’s the people not the structure….. finally john McGinn , Brendan, big Pete, seems as though the whole internet knew what when on , really, when the obvious answer staring everyone in the face , the lad wanted to play every week and the muppet in charge of Hibs couldn’t get him south quick enough to avoid grief from his own fans.

I realise I am falling into the trap of representing an opinion as a sort of fact , but hey it’s one interpretation which has the advantage of simplicity – the simple reason is usually correct – the alternative of Pete shafting Brendan because of starts you down a path of a totally dysfunctional org etc , etc

Red 12 -: at original agm. I shook my head in disappointment when board said they would discuss it in private..u K we then they wanted to bury it..and they have. .. same as lord nimmo. /======

You would not have been alonei in your thinking. Our guy on the ground on the day got hassle as a result of it. However the reaction was the result of not knowing what took place.

Had Celtic wanted to bury Res12 all they had to do was vote it down.

That would have caused release of some evidence suggesting skullduggery but after a few days of being the talk of the Internet Steamie (do younger readers know what a Steamie was?) like steam the issue would have evaporated into the ether.

Celtic wanted Res12 dropped on basis of their dealings with SFA but we refused on basis of what we understood then about UEFA FFP and tax which was narrow.

The suggestion to adjourn came the following day that kept Res12 alive and gave requisitioners as reps of shareholders the right to ask questions AND get answers.

The agreement at the time was any inquiries had to stay within Scottish football and to keep the issue alive that was accepted in good faith at the time although over time that began to waver.

However over the same time Res12 was able to gather more evidence all of which is available on the Archive at https:/www.res12.uk .

Far from being buried, Res12 has shone the light on Scottish football and what is being shown is the opposite of what many believe Celtic stand for.

    A kind of betrayal.

  15. Well done the protest marchers of A’Challtainn and surrounding Catholic family’s od St.Mary’s and St Alphonsus.

Nearly some rationale from the Daily Rainjurrz

Hatred and bigotry still on the march at Scotland’s walks of shame

Our columnist Annie Brown says those who follow the Catholic faith should be allowed to worship in peace away from the Orange Walk.

As a kid in Ayrshire, I was ordered inside when I ran to the gate to watch the Orange Walk .

It was a mesmerising spectacle, the twirl of the baton in the air, the men in sashes and bowler hats and the flutes playing the Sash.

For those raised Catholic , the performance was the posturing of bigots and a symbol of hatred.

Not so long ago, the Orange Walk would stop outside the chapels, the drums growing ever more thunderous, to drown out the mass inside.

It is intolerable that in 2019, Scotland’s ignominy continues to be paraded, with hundreds of marches across Scotland each year.

This Saturday, an Orange march will pass St Alphonsus in Glasgow , where Parish priest Canon Tom White was assaulted.

Last Saturday, the march walked past St Mary’s Church in Glasgow, surrounded by riot vans and police officers in unmarked cars and on horseback.

When Glasgow City Council re-routed an Easter Sunday Orange Walk away from St Mary’s and St Alphonsus, it was cancelled by organisers in protest.

The truth is, there was no incentive to continue with the march without the incentive of menace.

I am an atheist and a harsh critic of the institution of the Catholic Church but defend wholly the rights of its followers to worship without intimidation.

Yet, as progressive thinkers, we rarely react so vociferously to the persecution of Catholics, as we do to that of Jews or Muslims.

On Saturday, protesters stood silently outside as the march went by, reported as “without incident” – but that ignores the malignant intent of the hatred which paraded past the chapel door.

Onlookers clapped enthusiastically when the march reached the chapel and just before it had turned the corner, the band had been playing sectarian music.

They had played the tune of the Beach Boys’ Sloop John B, which was in 2009 deemed by a court to be racist when the lyrics were supplanted with the anti-Irish Famine Song.

They may not have been sung out loud but the lyrics, “The famine’s over, why don’t you go home?” must have resounded in the minds of the Catholics familiar with the tune.

Police Scotland didn’t object to last Saturday’s march and haven’t yet to the coming one but they can cite cause if they believe there is potential for anti-social behaviour.

And if they didn’t think there was cause, why does there have to be such a large and costly police presence at marches.

For many of us, trying to manoeuvre through the traffic and navigate our city and who despise prejudice, antisocial is exactly what an Orange Walk is.

The council says it needs the police objection to reroute the march but according to its own guidelines, a procession should have as “little negative impact as possible” on communities and the “presumption is that processions will avoid residential areas”.

St Alphonsus and St Mary’s are surrounded by residents and Glasgow City Council has a moral obligation to reduce the negative impact on Catholics and the rest of us and permanently reroute orange marches away from Catholic Churches.

More than 60 per cent of marches in Glasgow are by the Orange Order and they are spread throughout the year, not just summer.

No one is denying them their right to march but there are fewer than 60 streets in Glasgow with a chapel on them, which leaves 2500 potential routes for the Orange Order to choose from.

If the Orange Order was, as it purports to be, not founded on being anti-Catholic it would voluntarily reroute its marches.

And yet, the band plays on.

  16. Canamalar

It would have to be City of London police, never see the light of day in Scotia.

An AGM motion of No Confidence in the Board? Even a proposal, with some, ahem, publicity might be appropriate even if it was blocked from the Agenda.

Keep fighting for justice, there are those willing to contribute, within means, who will stand up when required. The longer it takes, though, the more dispirited some folk become. But, justice must be done nevertheless.

  19. Baba Bing

Yes, I thought so, Annie Brown will be on the Zombie Zombie hit list.

The criminal that assaulted Canon Tom White did more damage to ‘the Orange Walk’ than most political groups in a 100 years of Scotland.

The protest organisers played a proverbial blinder.

  20. EKBHOY @ 11:43 AM,

There does not have to be any confusion in any reporting lines. It’s a perfectly normal function of any Company. It shouldn’t even be difficult.

The only folk who like these blurry, confusing roles and responsibilities, reporting line scenarios are the slopping shoulders, CYA, over promoted, under achieving sorts. Or those with something to hide.

In Companies, 95% of Corporate; duties, roles and responsibilities are clear cut and perfectly manageable. The other 5% is normally there for other reasons;)

If we have an executive who cannot run a Football Club with clear reporting lines, duties, roles and responsibilities then we have a major problem. And these problems will continue to manifest themselves.

Look what Ronny had to go through with little support, look what Lenny’s going through with little support. Our last manager walked out… it’s not a coincidence.

    The John McGinn thing.

Like above, the John McGinn thing is systematic of a bigger problem, you can break each and every transfer screw up down to your hearts content but these problems will arise time and time again and cause direct and indirect problems.

Let’s give an off the wall example… do you think that last summer’s transfer issues had an impact on N’tcham form? Because I’m sure it did.

Now a month before John McGinn went to Aston Villa, he, Lenny and Brendan Rodgers all thought he was coming to Celtic… Fact.

John McGinn is on record as saying he wanted to go to Celtic. Celtic would not pay the asking price, John McGinn went to Aston Villa for £2.8M. I’d be surprised if they would sell him now for under ten…

The asking price was met according to other Celtic sources, no matter how many times the ‘John McGinn transfer’ is revisited you can’t post conjecture, as fact.

Other conjecture says the asking price was £23,000 per week John McGinn wages, against Celtiic’s £13,000

John McGinn is bound to be economical in his verson of events, if a Celtic minded journalist asked him pertinent questions, and if he answered straight the wage disparity would have been there, and a real reason for Villa waltzing to his signature.

The Plc decided to wait and get him for nothing, a month later AV were in the picture and the club and player accepted, only then did the Plc meet the asking price too late by a month. Those are the historical facts not conjecture, everything else is hearsay.
